Noise from rear with my teen kids in the back

So I was hauling my two teen girls to volleyball practice last night, and heard a scraping/rubbing sound from the rear that increased with vehicle speed. After they got out, I took a drive around and no noise. Okay, so added extra weight in the rear has got something rubbing, but no rubber smell as if it was making tires rub. I'm confident that the rear components are originals from 87, so I'm taking that into consideration. Would simply replacing the rear shocks improve the ride height? I might also add that I just dropped in about 70 pounds worth of sub enclosure/speakers in the well, so that's a constant added weight. IF I should have to replace springs as well, how do I go about finding a little stiffer set?

If shocks and springs are original to the car I would replace them both, which is fairly simple with hand tools. Would also check for proper tire size.

Tire size is correct (245/50R16). I just crawled under there, and lo and behold, for some reason, the passenger side parking brake cable wasn't run through it's chassis mounted path, thus causing the entire y union to drop and when the extra weight was added to the car, it caused it to come into contact with the driveshaft. That was the metallic sound I heard. Simple 2 minute fix and I'm back in business!

I do agree that it's time for new set of shocks and springs, but fortunately this is now an "at my discretion" type of project and not a "need to do now" type thing! Thanks for the input!
