You're not talking about the rubber brake hose are you, the one that goes to right over the center of the axle?

Re: support belt rear axle
That's not a factory part. You can see where someone hacked up the control arm.
It's called a limiter strap. On jeeps we use them to keep the axle from dropping too far when off-roading because the spring will fall out.
On our firebirds, the rear springs will fall out if you drop the axle far enough, but I don't know how that would be possible with the car on the ground.

Re: support belt rear axle
first of all, i apologize to the OP , I didn't realize that wasn't a pic of his car.
we still aren't sure which part you mean.
twinturbo- poor choice of words on my part. just meant you could see the hole was not factory (it is a little rough)

Re: support belt rear axle
Actually it IS a factory hole, the early 82 83 cars (some) have a stiffener bolted into the LCAs from the factory that uses those 2 holes (actually 4, since 2 each side) It's not hacked up in any way. The only drilled hole is in the inner fender support structure
The diagram GT4373 posted shows this as parts 21 and 22

Re: support belt rear axle
Actually, the control arms are a shared part with other GM's. One such application uses those holes to anchor the rear sway bar. Some engineer probably figured without they sway bar they needed the stiffener... Either way the holes are always there, with or without spacers or sway bars.

That does not answer the question. And the question was already answered 3 years ago.
