UMI Releases New Product- Bolt-in Rear Coil Over Kit for the 82-02 GM F-Body
Bolt-in Rear Coilover Kit for 1982-2002 Camaro and Firebird
P/N 2046 priced at $659.99/set
P/N 2046 priced at $659.99/set
UMI Performance, Inc is proud to introduce our P/N 2046 GM F-body bolt-in rear coilover kit. This kit allows installation of a true 2-1/2” dia racing coilover spring and double rod end performance shock. It allows the user to accomplish ride height, easy spring rate changes, and damping adjustment on the 3rd and 4th Gen F-body rear. An innovative, TIG welded lower bracket holds the shock in double shear and works with standard axle mounts as well as with most common relocation brackets (spacers included). Drilling two 3/8” holes is required (no welding). The teardrop shaped upper mount is also double shear and features a straight pull design for optimum performance. The 2046 kit provides ride height adjustment as well as 19 compression and 19 rebound adjustment positions on the Viking shock. The Viking springs are available in 12” 150lb/in for handling, 14” 125lb/in for general use and 14” 110lb/in for street/strip. All UMI components are 100% manufactured in Philipsburg, PA-USA.

I'm curious what the Viking shock P/N is that you use with that kit? C211 are the ones I have IIRC.

Just curious. How is the ring portion spreading the load throughout that area? It isn't tied into anything. The way that you have it now , it is just going along for the ride

Also, is there a single 3/8" bolt mounting the bottom of the assemblies to the axle? Seems like a lot of weight/force on two bolts

that was my first thought.
i think i'd be somewhat concerned about that mounting point.
i guess time will tell as people give feedback?
interesting design none the less.

FEA of the lower mount shows a large factory of safety compared to the available rate of the spring. We recommend you use bump stops to stop short of coil bind and/or shock shaft bottoming as a precaution.

Hmm, not familiar with the Autofab stuff. May have to check it out.
The cool thing about our kit is it will hold pretty much any standard 2-1/2" coilover. We are going to try some Afco's next...
The Vikings are very popular nowadays. Nice price, great quality, wide adjustment range.

I checked the Autofab setup. Our lower bracket is a different design with an added reinforcement bolt.
The upper bracket is a teardrop shape and allows the use of a standard style spring while also providing extra reinforcement.
The bracket system allows the use of a rod end racing shock in place of the standard upper stud type. This in turn allows for a huge expanse in the shocks available for the platform.

The double shear mount is centered over the mounting bolt. We just wanted a nice flat plate to weld to. It makes the product more of a robust design. It may not even stay that way forever...

Koni 30-5436 with a coil over kit would be perfect with these...
The bump dampening is spot on to the off the shelve koni yellow's with a little more rebound adjustment. They can be ran inverted as well so you can lower unsprung weight.

That clevis will eventually mar and damage the bottom of the coil over with axle rotation whether it from extension/compression or simply jacking the car up. I'd take some material away from that clevis. I did that to prevent it.

The photo was missing the main bolt (sorry, prototype photo). The lower bracket is held primarily by the 1/2-13 bolt in place of the original shock bolt. The double shear mount also uses a 1/2-13 fastener. The 3/8 is just a helper.
FEA of the lower mount shows a large factor of safety compared to the available rate of the spring. We recommend you use bump stops to stop short of coil bind and/or shock shaft bottoming as a precaution.

I'm thinking about a coil-over kit on my '92. How does this affect ride manners on the street? Everyone I have talked to say if it's a daily driver I will not be happy if a weekend racer its OK. What is everyone's experience?

As for the shock, we have all our cars on Vikings nowadays and love driving them on the track and street. One car we use as a commuter for the team when at shows (4 guys in a 4th Gen with luggage is interesting) and it rides fine.

We have three spring rates available, 110, 125 and 150. The 110 and 125 feel pretty "stock" while the 150 gives a crisp handling feeling. Technically you're taking the factory tuned spring out (and the associated rubber damper up top) and replacing it with a spring in a slightly different location and using double shear solid mounts. Ride manners are crisp/performance as opposed to soft and squishy.

The kit will handle great. The handling will depend on the shock, not the fact that it is now a coil over. We use the Viking because of the adjustment, you can easily tune the shock for drag, street and autox. We have reviewed many other shock dyno curves and the double adjustment of the Viking allows you to set it very similar to many other brands.

Here are a few pictures to show our bolt in lower shock mount used on the coilover kit. As you can see we require one hole to be drilled with a 3/8" drill. The included spacer shown behind the bracket allows the coil over kit to be used with relocation brackets as well. The bracket shown can also be used as a shock location bracket, we will be releasing that next.

Does the kit also include the spacer for the 3/8" bolt above LCA relocation bracket tab?

I had been looking at the kit Steve Spohn offers his upper load bearing plates are required to be welded in. So why do yours not require welding, and is it really necessary to weld?

We do not require welding on ours. Of course if you want to you can, but we do not require it.
Thank you.

Re: UMI Releases New Product- Bolt-in Rear Coil Over Kit for the 82-02 GM F-Body
I am definitely interested in this...just a quick question though. Obviously this kit is designed to work with the OEM axle. I just went on the UMI site and saw this...
"We have also confirmed this kit to work on Moser Engineering and Strange brand rear ends."
Just curious to know if you plan on testing fitment and/or creating lower shock mounting brackets for other types of rear end manufacturers. I only ask because I have a Currie built 9 inch Ford housing in my camaro and I am not sure if the brackets you currently offer will work. Thanks for any info.

Re: UMI Releases New Product- Bolt-in Rear Coil Over Kit for the 82-02 GM F-Body
Honestly, I would figure that the rear end design would probably be somewhat similar seeing as how the lower shock mounts would have to be in the same location for it to even bolt in to the car. Essentially, like you said, it might only require minor modifications to make this work. You don't happen to be working on developing a front coilover setup for this car, do you? I only ask because I am *particular* and like to keep matched components and if I use these in the rear then I would most definitely be on the hook for a set to match up front.
Also, I know you have probably done countless hours of R&D and road ttesting with this kit. Did you notice any unbalance with say, your coilovers in the rear and the factory style suspension up front?
Thanks for answering all my questions!

We have found the kit to work very well on the street and autox use with no unbalanced feel. We are very happy with the feel on the coil over set up.
A front kit may come in the future, I think Viking is also working on their own front end kit. The cool thing about these coil over kits is we don't have to use the Viking shock, we can use many other shocks. So if you wanted to match to the front we could use a QA1 rear shock and match to a QA1 coil over kit...so this is always an option. QA1 offers a front kit for the 82-92.
I hope that helps!

I wanted to add a few more pictures of the new rear kit installed, these pictures show the top mount and also how they work with relocation brackets.
This kit is bolt on and we supply 3/16" thick spacers to space the shock mount out to clear relocation brackets.

Ok, this seems interesting.
Can you list the advantages that I will gain from stock to your rear coil over kit? My car has a LS1/T56 and is most importantly a daily driver. It will be auto crossed and see road course at Road Atlanta a few times a year. I want the car to handle like it is on rails, yet still be comfortable enough for long road trips with the girlfriend.
So with that said, will I benefit from this kit? Or does this setup apply more to the drag racing guys?

On the flip side you could choose 110's for a plush ride but at the expense of auto-x and road course handling. We are still testing so I can't say with data but I'd imagine the car would understeer at the limit due to the grip provided by the low rear spring rate.

Looks pretty good. Are you able to offer higher spring rates? I currently run 200lb rears and plan on stepping up to 250lb very soon. Also, do you have dimensions for total shock height, compressed height and stroke? I'm having a difficult time finding a shock short enough to not bottom out. Are dyno graphs available for these shocks? I haven't heard of them. I autoX my camaro competitively. I'm currently running Koni yellows.

The C211 which comes standard has a ~ 15.5 inch ride height whereas we can special order C209 with a 13.75 inch ride height.
Our kit provides the double shear mounting to accommodate double rod end shocks and true 2-1/2" coilover springs so really, the options are limitless.
Viking's management came from upper mgmt at QA1 so they know what they're doing for sure.
I've attached the theoretical dyno curve. You'll notice this data is a representation intended to give you the idea of how the curves look. A real curve would of course have some noise and the lines wouldn't be perfectly straight...

Re: UMI Releases New Product- Bolt-in Rear Coil Over Kit for the 82-02 GM F-Body
It's my idea and a terrible copy of my design I gave to Steve Spohn over 10 years ago. It did not "just get real". The way UMI is marketing it will cause the chassis to fail. This plate needs to be 3/16" thick and NEEDS to be welded aroung the spring pocket as well as the perimeters of the plate in this larger format.
UMI small design as well as merely held by a bolt in the stock shock location will cause the plate to eventually wobble enough and punch right through the chassis without load support of welds on the spring pocket. Terrible redition of something that was invented over a decade ago people. Umi- Make the plate larger and require welding. you'll thank me later- trust me.
The shock you use is certainly a little better then the crap QA1 Spohn sells, however, it is only interesting to the drag race crowd. The Koni someone else here listed is the optimum monotube because it cam be mounted upsidedown to reduce unsprung weight (critical to optimum handling and ride quality on any car) and can be easily run just as Roostmeyer suggested. It is a far better shock- I run that very shock on 2 other vehicles of mine in custom applications and yes it fits the 3rd gen rear perfectly when lowered and used with my plate design Spohn sells.

Our upper plate is 3/16" thick and customers are welcome to weld it.
The teardrop design and double shear is dictated by the shape of where it is mounted.
