one damn thing after another

welp spent most of yesterday and today putting a new power steering pump on, get everything al perfect and peachy and then find that fluid is pissing out the bottom of the steering box so now i pose the question do i just rebuild the box (replace that bottom seal) or spend the 116 on a new box? the rebuild kit is 13.99

If it's the right box, I'd go with the new one..., in theory you sould have one with the correct tolerances, anything worn out replaced/new wear items... didn't realize they were that cheap - is your labor + other parts that might be replaced + cleaning/paint worth less than $102?

I'd have to agree. What if the leak is because of play in the shaft? A seal won't fix that, not for long anyhow. New parts are usually waranteed, fix it yourself and it's all on you.

Re: one damn thing after another

well i cave'd guys, i got a brand new AC delco box on its way with new hoses and hardware from rockauto, everything plus shipping was only around 150.00 advanced and napa want 160 for the box itself, autozone wants 140 f that websites lie about prices, even though rockauto is only a website haha

I wouldn't say you caved. You didn't settle for an inferior steering box. Tell yourself that to ease the pain. Really not a bad deal when you consider shipping 40# or so. Even if you got a scrap yard part you'd pay 1/3 of that.

Before you install it, clean it up good to get the oil off and top coat it with your choice of color.

It's also a good idea to verify the preload on the input and output shafts if it's a reman or maybe even if new.

brand new, ac delco, im fine with it black, im definitely gonna check my frame rail for cracks though, even z28s can get them. knowing its new should i still clean it up and repaint it? i imagine the casting will be alright, if not i will clean it up with my rotary and then paint it, probably polish the aluminum cap

Most of those 'factory' paint coats won't last very long. You'll have to inspect it and see how easily it may come off.

Re: one damn thing after another

Well it is, technically, an AC Delco box. All the ones I see on RA are reman though.

It may be fine, if the seals look good, but it does appear to have been sitting on a shelf for some time.

At least you got a fridge magnet?

Asthetics arent the best, but you planned on painting it anyhow. Does it function is what matters. Cant hurt to call and raise some hell. Cut enough of a fuss and you may get a partial refund. Large companies will do this to keep your business. A line I have used with success is "no ammount of savings is worth...insert your grief here..." Autoplicity sent me$30 back on an $80 order.

Re: one damn thing after another

Not to be a dick, but I was just looking at the power steering gearboxes at RockAuto recently and I'm pretty sure the AC DELCO unit is listed as remanufactured.

Confirmed, I just checked. I wouldn't call up getting too pissed. And like Joe Tag says, if it works okay, you should be fine.
