Is there a collapsible joint in the column?

I am replacing my column in a 88 gta that was previously replaced with a column that did not have the vats key, my car has the vats and someone rigged it by leaving the old key and cylinder tucked away in the ashtray after they replaced the column with one that didn't have the vats. Kind of creative. when I took out the vats-less column and compared it to the newer column with the vats, I noticed about a 1" (inch) difference between the two. The new one was the shorter one. I thought the rag-joints were collapsible, but are the columns to? My car has the radio controls and vats which I believe started in 88? Maybe the previous column and rag joint came from a 87 gta? What gives?
