5th gen coil overs

ok, i really don't like the design of the coil over conversions for our cars, and i was looking at some of the 5th gen coil overs and was thinking, that there not much different. it seams to me that the strut tower mounts would need to be custom fabed but so what.... any one have any thoughts on this?

Re: 5th gen coil overs

What are you plans for the car? Coilovers are kind of a bummer on these cars as they limit front tire width and put all the weight of the front end on the thin strut towers.

road racing, silver state classic. but that is a good point, it would limit front tire width. it was just an idea that i was tossing around

Re: 5th gen coil overs

I think you'll quickly have the upper strut mount sticking out the hood with the higher beltline on the 5th gen. Also, I'm guessing the spindle to strut bolts are different. Using the 5th gen spindle isn't going to work since they use a lower multi-link "a-arm." It would do some great things to scrub radius though.

Re: 5th gen coil overs

i emaild a couple development companies and they said the strut to spindle mount is the same, i dont remember the detentions off hand, but really it seams the only issue would be your upper strut mount ... and i know we could strengthen that, but hight may be and issue, very true

How wide of a tire do you plan on running? 275s fit just fine with my coilovers.

Re: 5th gen coil overs

Nick, I'm reading your post, after running the Roval I hit the S berms pretty hard and bottomed the front shocks and bent both Spohn Extra tall spring caster/Camber plates.

I know that the Citation had the same shock mounts and were an inch shorter but the diameter was smaller.
I'm working with Re-Suspension, you can't cut down the tube on Konis, but you can on Bilsteins.
Since I don't race any specific clubs the rules don't apply to me.
I'm looking at Penske or Ohlins with a specific height, but they are prolly going to be a $1000 a strut, Penske and Ohlins llok to be available, via custom work, the guys at Re Suspension will get back with me on ideas.

I'm running 18 inch wheels with R888 low profile meats, 750lb springs in the front with a spacer and a tender to get my height. When I scale the car to get it even on all for corners I end up with about 1 inch of travel on the fronts before I bottom. I run Ohlins with a reservoir on the rear and they are awesome. let's chat, also if we can find that guy from the netherlands, he a may have already been here done that.

I'm definitely looking to do some work here, we can team up and maybe save some cost.

We did some R&D for custom valving on these for our 5th gen. camaro

I would put them up there with JRI and Penske with the correct valving for a specific application.

Re: 5th gen coil overs

I looked at he 5th gen stuff which is nice the spacing on the mounts to the spindles are not the same, I went to JJ Chevrolet and matched them up.
Oh how I wished they would be the same.

Re: 5th gen coil overs

Sorry my bad, thought you were looking for 5th gen.

AFCO has the same set-up for 3rd gen, I have sold a few sets of them with custom valving.

Your good man, always looking for info, I'll look at the AFCO third gen goodies.
Can you shorten the tube on the AFCO's?

Re: 5th gen coil overs

These cars sit like a third story building in the stock config, I end up never using all the travel intended for stock usage, probably looking for the last three inches max.
As long as I can keep the lower A arms at good usable angle, I'm good.

Re: 5th gen coil overs

After doing some digging I've come up with:
2 inch drop spindles
Raised alternate shock tower with weld in plates
Shorter strut

Looking at the spindles either by Kenny at PA racing or Racecraft, they both have proven stuff, it won't change the roll center but it looks like it will change the CG.

The weld in top plates can replace the height I had with the tall Spohn caster/camber plates, see photo, I then can use multiple caster/camber combos keeping the spring off the center bearing of the plate unit is the trick.

As far as the strut goes Re -Suspension is looking for something to reduce the stroke in the mean time ground control does make a shorter strut with Koni guts...
