descent rear end on a budget...
i was wondering if someone can give me a couple of ideas of some rear ends that i could look at purchasing to put on my 92 camaro. id rather it be one that i could basically buy and pop right in...i dont really have any welding experience so that would be a problem..not really sure what gears i would need but im probably gonna build the engine around anywhere from 450-500HP..thanks in advance. (list some sites if possible....id like the price to be reasonable..need to spend my money wisely.)

Re: descent rear end on a budget...
and the welding would come in where??? When you buy a rear axle assembly you can go one of 2 ways, buy a used one and then buy a good posi and set of gears then either set it up yourself, which is a PITA, or you can pay more money to have a shop do it.
Either way you go its not cheap, a good posi costs $300+, $600 for a new eaton, if your gonna have a high HP motor you'll want a posi and id suggest shying away from lockers, because there is some serious wheel hop with those things and youll end up breaking the bank with your tire bill. Plus you might want a higher spline set of axles, due to the torque issues
There is next to no way to get a good strong rear on a small budget, ive been working on my disc/eaton conversion for about 3 months now and i have yet to buy my posi due to the price

Re: descent rear end on a budget...
For those prices I would look into just going str8 from moser, currie, or strange. I don't think you can go wrong with any of them.
As far as 9" versus 12 bolt, it seems to be a personal pref. thing from what I read on here. I like the 9" idea for my car since I have more experience with the 9" and I like to just pull the whole third member and take it to the gear shop for set-up when changing gears.
Actually if you have endless funds you could just buy two different 3rd members w/ different gears and change gears for the track in a hour! LOL

Re: descent rear end on a budget...
Those links show a typical 9" and 12 bolt direct bolt in housing and you're not going to find a much better price for a fully assembled diff. You have very few choices for anything else without doing a lot of fabrication work. It's possible to find a Dana 44 that was designed as a bolt in diff for a third gen but chances are if it's in good condition, it won't be much cheaper than the 12 bolt or 9".
Support any of the TGO sponsors such as www.spohn.net for a similar deal.
Your 92 diff is stronger than you think. It already has 28 spline axles. I'd say run it as it is until you break the gears then decide on a good replacement.

Re: descent rear end on a budget...
here's what i did to mine(10 bolt): moser 28 spline axels(stock was 26) off ebay for $160, zexel torsen posi off ebay for $185, new richmond 3.73 gears at a steal for $68, c-clip eliminators @ $92 and a stud girdle cover w/ bearing cap screws for $110. I started with it 4yrs ago running high 13s and now i'm down in the 11.4x hoping for high 10s next season and that rear end NEVER missed a beat even with squeezing nitrous right off the line EVERY run

Re: descent rear end on a budget...
let me just say a few things to maybe better understand what it is im doin with my build and then a few questions i have...i just got this 92 camaro rs...was originally a california car...the previous owner said he rebuilt the 305 that was in there when i got it(did a shitty job) and the body has 200,000 miles on it..so im thinking he differential is no different..so as far as the stock 92 diff (in reply to Stephen 87 IROC's comment) i dont really know how much more it could handle...id rather get something new that way ill feel more at easy knowing it wont cause me any problems.. one question i have is...obviously like sweetaq said its about personal preference.... but if i was looking to go with either the 9" or 12 bolt or Dana 60, is there anything that makes one slightly better than the other....like would there be a benefit with having the 9 versus the 12 bolt, or the 12 instead of the dana 60....i think you guys get the picture..thanks for your input guys.

Moser. Not that hard lol
Unfortunately when i think budget, moser and currie ends are kinda out of mind, ive heard good things about the ford 9 inch rear, people that have them dont really complain.
After reevaluating your meaning of "budget" id say hit up the ford rear and call it a day, easy (as far as this subject goes) to do and for your HP hopes id say it will do

if you have the cash, don't waste time, get the 9"....you'll love it even more come time to do a gear/posi swap, the whole 3rd member just drops right out as a unit.

The 9" ford take's more power to turn for sure but I'm glad i went with it.
i did run the 7.5 rear end with a mini spool to 11.29 before it's kept breaking pinion's or ring gears

Re: descent rear end on a budget...
If you are not racing it then just keep what you have. When you do start racing it, waiting until it breaks is a good idea. You probably won't get enough traction to break it on the street anyway

Re: descent rear end on a budget...
because if it takes say 3yrs or more to break depending on what you're doing with it, that is money you would have kept in your bank account for a little longer.

Re: descent rear end on a budget...
The title of the topic says budget. Spending $2000+ for a strong differential usually isn't considered a budget item. If you break the factory diff, then a stronger diff is a necessity and not a budget item.
I go to the speed shops and tell them what I want. They quote me a price and I just ask if it's in stock and if not, how long will it take to bring it in. When I know I need a specific part because a stock item just won't cut it, price isn't an issue.
I've got close to a $1000 center section just about ready to go into my 9". Moser bolt through aluminum housing with 3.06" bearings. Aluminum daytona pinion support. Aluminum spool. 4.57 Strange/US gears polished and debured.

Re: descent rear end on a budget...
im sorry if the title is misleading..by saying on a budget i meant that i dont want to dish out 4,000 or 5,000 on a rear end( just random prices)..like i said im basically new to all this...so i just wanted to hear peoples comments on something i could get thats new without breaking my bank...thats all..once again im sorry.
