Fixing my A-Arms

Hey, so i have the a-arms off, but the rust has litterally welded to the bushings, i tried to get them off with a ball joint remover yesterday and put a piece of metal infront so it was a flat surface. It has now crushed the metal in a bit. im sure i can bend it out, but is there a trick to getting these bushings out?

Any information would be great.

I've read about people using a drill bit and drilling the bushing out. Not sure what size they used.

Re: Fixing my A-Arms

that sounds interesting.. i have a torch, i could just cut it out and replace the bushings but was trying to see if there was a secret, or a easy way to remove these.

Thanks

Also remember reading that you shouldn't burn them out. Again someone that knows what they are talking about should chime in with some definitive answers.

Re: Fixing my A-Arms

I just use a drill bit and drill around the rubber until the center all comes out. Then I put a slit in the sleeve, and crush it with a pair of pliers, or hit it with a hammer or osmething. They are a royal pain in the butt. I hate them. The last time around, I welded some steel on my arms, sort of boxing them in in spots. That helped. But next time I need to replace bushings, Im going to just buy new control arms from spohn or something. haha..

i was pressing the bushing out the wrong way, that is why it was putting up such a big fight.. i actually just tried to hit the opposite side with a hammer and the ****ing bushing flew across my garage needless to say i have learnt my lesson and the control arms are now at the powder coating shop!

Which way is the right way and which is the wrong way. I'll be doing a complete front end rebuild to include struts and springs myslef next week and could use tips.

Re: Fixing my A-Arms

I used a few tools to get the a-arm bushings out. First, I cut the bushings up. I used a sawzall and cut as much as I could. Second, used a utility knife and screwdriver to remove the rubber that I could get to. Third, when I got enough rubber removed, I grabbed the inner tube(now part of the inner tube, remember the sawzall) with a vise grip and removed the inner tube. Forth, used flat head screwdriver to remove the rest of the rubber in both halves. 5th, used the ball joint removal tool to remove what was left of the a-arm bushing shells.

Only if you plan on using them again.

No other reason not to torch them out.
