It will fit from what I have read, however it is 2" wider and will put your wheel location 1" futher out on each side. Every thing else should be the same. You could search it and there are several discusions on it. If you have the 9 bolt then I do not think anything will interchange.

I used an 86 TA rear in mine and my 88 breaks and rotors worked. I don't know about the 4th gen breaks. The diff and ring might work? easy way to find out is to see if the same after market parts will fit both rearends. If they do then they should interchange. The axels will not work to long and if the diff does then you will have to get the correct splined and length axels. The 86 rear I got had 3.73s in it I just put a new Aubern diff in. ???s on how long it will last with curent motor.

I would do a search in the drivetrain forums to verify all this, but if you're running 28 spline axles in that 87 10bolt then it should fit. Unfortunately, I think the pre 90-92 10bolts came with 26 spline axles, so it would not be a drop in swap. Good news is that the 28 spline axles found in the 90-92 10bolts can be used in the earlier 10bolt housings, so if you can find a set of 28 spline axles from the yard out of a 90-92 3rd gen, then you should be able to make this work with your 87 10bolt housing. Alot of people have done this swap, in fact SLP sells (or used to sell) drop in posi units out of OEM 4th gens that people use on their 3rd gen 10bolts. Also, if that 4th gen rear has discs and came from a LS1 car, then you can re-use those rear brakes on our 10bolts. What kind of brakes are on that 87 10bolt? If its the crappy iron calipers, then the LS1 rear disks will be a great upgrade.

Just buy the rear and install it. Your tires will stick out slightly, but its not bad, and it actually looks pretty aggressive. You'll already have the correct spacing in the back if you were to upgrade to 4th gen rims or Vette rims in the future.

-You will gain the big 12" LS1 rear disc brakes.
-You will gain the 28 spline axles (though you may have these already in '89)
-You will gain the extra track width, or have "built in spacers" for newer style rims

If you wanted to retain your current axle...then buy the new one and swap all the parts but use your current axles (assuming they are 28spline...I actually thought these started in '89 but I could be wrong).

I would swap in the newer axle and save yourself the aggrivation. Bolts right in just swith the rims. I rebuilt my 89 10 bolt to use a T2R diff and in the process found that the axle splines were the older 26 spline version. New 28 spline axles from Moser were $300. You can use the diff and gears but you will need to buy new axles. I spent $500 for a diff, $300 for axles, like $350 for gears and bearings, and $350 to have someone do the work. All said it was $1500 and that did not count the brake upgrade. When I did the brakes I used 4th gen calipers and rotors with the 3rd gen mounting bracket (still available from GM) and this was another $300 or so. If I knew then what I know now I never would have done it. Switch the axle; cheaper, easier, faster.
