Issue with front struts
I put new Koni struts and shocks on my '89 GTA a few years ago. Well, right now I'm rebuilding the front suspension and I'm replacing the strut mounts. While removing one of the Konis, naturally the hex at the top of the strut rod rounded off before I could get the nut loose. I filed it down to a 10mm and tried again...rounded off again. Filed it down to a 3/8" and tried again...rounded off again. This was after penetrating oil and a torch. I finally ended up cutting the nut off and fubaring the strut rod with vise grips. Three year old $170 strut is history...and the worst part is you're supposed to replace them in pairs. Naturally the left side came out as pretty as you please...
My question is...I know that you are supposed to replace struts in pairs. But in this case, the old ones are only a few years old and have 30,000 miles on them. Do you think I really need to replace both since one of them is now unusable? I have heard that Konis are rebuildable. Has anyone had this done?
Take this piece of advice. If you ever replace the struts and the strut mounts have some miles on them...do them at the same time.
