I have a few questions regarding brakes. First, what's the maximum size that'll fit on a thirdgen? Then I have seen various different discs with an assortment of various slits and holes in them. Are these really needed? or are they just for looks? and if they do have sum use other than cosmetic, what's the significance of them? Thanks for helping out a newbie guys and gals.

The slots and holes are to vent the rotor. It dissipated heat quicker and is less prone to warp. The bigger the rotor you have, the better the stopping power.

with the new pad tech you don't need the cross drilled/slotted stuff, it is just for looks. 30 years ago they did it to help vent gasses, but pads are much better now. what you want is a good solid rotor, the larger area will vent heat very well, and you get more pad/rotor contact with a non-drilled rotor. the size is up to you, both baer and spohn sell 13" rotor options, spohns 13" kit has wilwood 4 piston rotors, it is a pretty wild setup.

Usually comes back to what size of rims you're running. Like a 13" brake system won't fit under pontiac type 16" rims so it might not be the brake of choice since people will have to get new rims too. So you're talking 1500+ bucks for the brakes then acouple more for the rims. Course if you're already running big rims why not.

When maybe a 1LE brake setup for $850 + spindles might be all you're looking for.

15-16" wheels: 12" brakes are as big as you can go.

17" wheels: you can go up to 13" rotors.

That's really all you'd need.

I wont throw anything bigger than 16''s on the Maro. Anything bigger just doesn't look right IMO.

Now are they different types of disc brakes? like various methods of braking? Or do all of them work the same way?

what size rims do ya have? i guess 16" i don't know what your budget is. but you might wanna look at going to the junk yard and getting some LS1 front brakes, get some aftermarket rotor and by the time ur all done ur looking at $500. i'llbe doing the same but w/ C5 brakes once i mount my new rims after the winter

i'll most likely end up w/ 15's or 16's max.....more likely the 15's. and how big are the disc brakes on the LS1's? For now, it's mostly for looks, but give it a year or 2 and I'll be needing them as i'll be at the racetrack pulling low numbers Ü. this is of course if everything goes to plan. So I want to just get it right the first time....get what I like/need the best the first time around. will save lotsa money.

They all work the same, they pinch the rotor between the pads. The LS1s are a 12"x 1.25" thick rotor. They're BIG and the caliper is about 1/3 bigger than a C4.

Check out the LS1 thread in the FAQ forum, it's been moved to the top of the list. The advantage of the C4/C5/LS1 brakes is that they allow you to use a hub instead of just a rotor, so rotor and caliper changes take only a few minutes. Stock brakes won't allow this.

I'm pretty sure they came on all V8s '98-'02. Read this thread for pics of both the C4s and LS1s and a TON of info on the swap. There's a few of us out there who have put it together already, mine's just not on the car yet.
