Re: Big Bear trip on September 15th
The plan is to meet up at my place at 9:30 and depart at 10:00 AM
and caravan out to the Inland Empire to pick up any from that area.
We we then stop at Wildwood Park on Waterman Ave, (hwy 18 & 40th st.)
In case anyone wants to meet there from that area. (should be there by 11:00AM)
If you are in the Inland area let me know where you want to meet up
so we can pass the info on.

Re: Big Bear trip on September 15th
Fun cruise and great BBQ in sunny but much cooler Big Bear. Awesome views from the cruise, but we were slowed down by a few mechanical gremlins. The Formula ran like a champ all the way home, though.
...just ordered a new fuel pump, this one seems OK to get me bk and 4th to work for now, but any extended uphill thrashes will be avoided until the new one is installed.

Re: Big Bear trip in September
Yeah, I lost half of the electrical in my car. Unfortunately the electric water pump was on the part that lost power. My car looked like Old Faithful when I pulled to the side of the freeway.
When I got the car home and put some water in the radiator I was able to start it up and drive it into the garage. Oil looked fine. I heard no unusual noises when it fired up. I will just have to wait and see if there was any serious damage to the motor. I don't know at this point. I will look into the electrical problem on Monday. My fingers are crossed.

I had a good time!
Thanks to everyone who gave or offered a ride!
I was sorry the ride with Allen was cut short, I was looking forward to hearing about his many projects!
Hope everyone's car is all right.

Re: Big Bear trip in September
Update: I have been doing some testing and it now appears the problem is in the heater portion of the O2 sensor. I have disconnect the power wire to the heated O2 and everything seems OK electrical wise. I will have to drive it some more and see what happens.
I am still going to have to watch the water level and the color of the oil and make sure I don't have a cracked head or leaking head gasket. The short block seems fine. I can probably thank the coated pistons and Mobil One for that.

Re: Big Bear trip in September
Ha, ha. I got the motor you left at the shop installed and it works great. But, it turned out the motor control module is the culprit, started smoking as soon as I adjusted the motor. It appears the transistor for the drivers side motor burned and broke in half, and the relay has a burned wire, probably what burned up my motor.
I owe you so next cruse you can drive my Vette, but I'm a lousy back seat driver.

Wow I can't help feeling bad about your car Allen.
Like, I should have left my karma at home with my car.
[QUOTE But, it turned out the motor control module is the culprit /QUOTE]
At one time I thought I had that problem, so I had a bunch of extra control modules I got from the junkyard, but I think I sold them all to Lon...
...I have one that says "BAD" on it, but I can't remember if it really was BAD, because the problem ended up being a wire shorting on the body.

Re: Big Bear trip in September
SB Chevys have a high tolerance for abuse. Mine overheated 4 times (various moving-target reasons all relating to the fans quitting in traffic), once so bad the engine sounded like it was seizing, plus a spun bearing and low oil pressure. The oil pressure problem is what killed it, there was scarcely any evidence of the massive overheating on the piston skirts (Coated), far less than I expected to see. With coated piston skirts and good oil, and a little luck, and you should be OK. (knocking on wood).

Re: Big Bear trip in September
No it was fine. The problem was I was using the pink/black ignition power wire that was tied into the gauge power circuitry along with a couple of other items to pull in the relay that powered the electric water pump motor. So anytime the key was on the water pump would run.
As it turned out the heater power for the O2 sensor was also using that same circuitry. The relay coil only draws mili-amps so that was not putting much of a load on the circuit. So once the O2 sensor power circuit went South so did the water pump, the gauges and anything else fed by that circuit/fuse.
I could add a relay that is powered by that circuit that would supply power to the O2 sensor. I could feed the relay contacts off the battery with an inline fuse. That way it would not take everything else out with it.

Re: Big Bear trip in September
A little update. I went ahead and added the relay to control the power to the heated O2 sensor. The relay coil is controlled by ignition voltage. The relay coil only draws 1/5 of an amp. The power comes from the battery through a 5 amp fuse, through the N/O contacts of the relay and then on to the O2 sensor. Car appears to be running just fine.
