Exhaust noise restrictions
I have an 88 GTA that my wife and I autox. There are a couple of events in Fontana and San Diego that we want to bring it over from AZ to run in. There is a 92db noise limit for the vehicle at WOT measured 50 ft from the vehicle. Since this is, I believe, the legal limit for CA vehicles on the street, what does everyone run for exhaust to keep their cars under this limit.
The vehicle in question is a Miniram'd 383 with Dyno Don's headers, magnaflow cat, 3 inch pipes and a Magnaflow muffler. We're going to get it sound tested on the track in AZ in early January but I'm curious to know what combo's are being run by people living in SoCal that are quiet enough to pass the existing noise ordinances.

Re: Exhaust noise restrictions
Except for my IROC being a 355 we have the exact same exhaust setup and I've never been stopped for noise. I've been stopped for speeding but didn't mention the noise.

Re: Exhaust noise restrictions
There are a lot of items on a car that would affect the exhaust loudness. I would bet that 2 cars with the same mods would not read the same on a decibel meter.
My GP is pretty loud and the one time I was at autox at funtucky no one said a word about it.
Before bringing the car 300+ miles I would spend a few bucks and have it tested. If it's close get a certified result to show at the track as all meters may not read the same.

I'm not too worried about driving around in CA, as I've driven all over So-Cal with this set up prior to this.
We want to take it to the SCCA National tour at Qualcomm in San Diego and apparently there's noise restrictions. Getting Das boot out of there would suck.

Re: Exhaust noise restrictions
There are some old school tricks that you could do just to get you to the event and back with out having to worry about your db output.
I've seen guys use brillow pads stuffed in the tail pipes to lower the sound, but you need to drill two small holes so you can run a wire through the pipe to hold the brillo in place.
Once you get to the track, just take the wire out, rev the throttle to blow out the brillo and just put it back in to go home.
The one down side to this is it will add some heat to the engine,

Re: Exhaust noise restrictions
Not really worried about getting there and back. They measure during the event and DQ your car if it's over the sound limit. But the measurement is taken from 50ft away on a straightaway where you are at WOT.

N/m about what I said...
I see what you're saying... SCCA - I don't know about that.

Re: Exhaust noise restrictions
I've heard rumors that it was coming to some of the drag strips. I know it is enforced at the SCCA Regionals at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego which is why I'm concerned. The limit there is 92db which is the legal limit for all cars in CA, if I've read the laws correctly.

3" I/O Cat, SLP Loudmouth 1 with 3" piping all the way to 4"x16" custom tail pipes. The tail pipes had a megaphone effect on my exhaust. You hear me before you see me. FAR BEFORE you see me.
