I know thirdgens are starting that value climb, but...

Has anyone gone through the classifieds recently?!? Either people are completely out of their minds or its too much of a sentimental loss to apparently price their vehicle appropriately. Especially those east coast rust/salt ridden Thirdgens.

Now I get the sentimental thing, I really do, because you couldn't pry my convertible from me. (and thats with it just being a project shell that im collecting parts for) But then again I wouldn't sell for any price and some of these people are trying to sell with a tag line of "itd be a great project car / Needs work - $8500" Its not a TTA there friend.

Others are $2k off in their pricing, the cars been for sale for months and months, with a bunch of bumps (by them not others) and yet, they cant understand why it isn't being sold with its mighty and powerful L03 and their upfront insistence that only REASONABLE offers will be accepted. It's like I hate to clue you in there bud, but your offer isn't reasonable to begin with.

Or am I just off?

Re: I know thirdgens are starting that value climb, but...

I dont know, it depends on the car. Me personally I wouldn't sale mine for less than 10k. Is it really worth that, no. In reality I'd say mine is actually worth 6 - 7k tops in it's current state. I've got more than that in it, but until you do a complete restore you never get back what you have in them.

So that is part of the sentimental thing on my price, plus I had a 91 RS a few years ago that I sold when I was desperate for many and regretted it every day since. When I got my current one I vowed to never sale it. But if someone really wanted to pry it from my fingers, they could, it would just be costly hehe.

In my area I see quite a few reasonably priced ones, and then I see the unreasonable ones to. I just laugh at them and say your crazy

They are going up in value? Where?

You can't give them away around here. The people on the forum are thirdgen enthusiasts so we tend to over-value these cars. But like it or not, thirdgen.org represents an extreme minority view of the thirdgen market.

Go on craigslist and you can find joe schmoes selling them all day long for dirt cheap.

Have you seen whats on craigslist recently? Ive been toying with the idea of trying to find something that needs an engine replaced, since I have a forged and blueprinted one ready to drop in, but maybe my criteria is off. Like I said it could be me :P Though the classifieds here... People are trying to sell vehicles at a premium to people that KNOW its a premium and they wonder why not a single inquiry.

I've been watching the internet "for sale" sites for more than 8 months now. I wasn't in the market 1 or 2 years ago, so I can't say if average prices have gone up since then. What I can say is that in most cases the original asking price and the final selling price are not the same. Most cars in good but not perfect condition seem to get sold when they get down 25-35% off their original asking price. I say this because I've seen many 3rd gens Craigslist ads prices start high and drop over time until they sell or the seller gives up.
The other place you can see this is on ebay. I watch the IROCs for sale there every day. Very few with a high starting price or reserve sell the first time around. When I go in to delete the "ended" items in my watch list, it's rare to see more than 1 or 2 out of ten IROCs that sell first time around. Cars that start out with asking prices of $5000~$6000 often end up selling for $3000~$4000. Many of the low mile, restored, or so called collector grade seem almost never to sell. Cars with reserve of $14k or more rarely sell and usually pull high bids of only $8~9K.
I guess the sellers are getting "retail" prices from Kelley's or some similar used car price guide. If so, these prices don't really represent the current market prices that I've seen.

Re: I know thirdgens are starting that value climb, but...

i can understand some of the 3rdgens out there are rediculously priced, due to what many of you already stated. but i kinda think some of it may be that no one wants to spend that kind of money anymore these days due to the crap economy. i see great buys all day long on cars i want, and cars that i would actually pay the asking price. its just i dont have that kinda money to spare, or sometimes even HAVE lol. i know some of you out there in your older ages may not have that problem

Re: I know thirdgens are starting that value climb, but...

i say if the price is high IMO you should have receipts of the work that has been done, mileage, aftermarket parts. all these things and more speak for the car in terms of value but if there is none of this and your asking for a lot there are no "facts" to stand behind the price or history of the car. i myself have a prety rare '86 t/a that i bought for $2,000 it has all the service that has been done to the car, parts repaired receipts, all the original manuals and booklets not a brag but an example of how a car can be priced the condition was good it still needed some parts , still ran just needed like OEM rims, and a lot of small preventative maintanece. but there are those that let personal value get in the way you got to put feelings aside and look at it from a perspective of how much it would cost and do research of similar items in the condition yours is in and can price it down some and trust it will sell

Im going to be kind of blunt but $3k+ for a car that has issues, isnt streetable, is going to be a b*tch to try to get registered even AFTER you do everything to get it smog legal, is, a bit... much. You've got it setup for racing and you obviously put ALOT of money and time into it, but its going to take an extremely niche buyer to come along and in this economy...? Guys like me just looking for something to get them around while working on their projects or just looking for a thirdgen to drive around in period, make up the majority of buyers and arent looking for a rac car. With that said would still like to own a third thirdgen built like yours. Its an awesome car for what it is

Re: I know thirdgens are starting that value climb, but...

totally agree. I see cars listed in CL that are setup for racing, have no AC, and wouldn't pass emissions unless I slipped the guy $300, probably gets MPG in the 10-12 range if you are lucky, and I think "somebody really ruined that car"

Intimidator, I haven't seen your car, so I'm not attacking you, but just speaking about the classified ads in general

Cars are much more sellable in a stock state,

Agreed... Or with slight modification like suspension upgrades. I hear "only 10k miles on rebuilt engine, .060 over, etc.." That does send up some flags.

Intimidator, Just looked up your black car, and it isn't at all the hack jobs I was describing on CL. Nice car for a great price

That being said, since I live in Texas, I would still want to add AC to it.

Re: I know thirdgens are starting that value climb, but...

sold my car but had lots of oem upgrades and a new short block, but it was smog ready,a/c worked fine as did everything else including rear hatch door lock and cig lighter. It needed a paint job to be a 10 but sold for 6700.00. I advertised on the east coast areas though cause so cal market is pretty soft for whatever reasons.
