Some lucky person just bought...
The L.A. Craigslist had an '88 GTA for sale for $750. This car was originally flame red but had been resprayed metallic brown. Owner said it had an engine knock and had too many projects. I live in San Diego and thought this was a steal. Apparently I wasn't the only one. Even in the midst of torrential rains and high winds, the seller had no problem getting his price in one day. There is still a market for these cars. This was a 5.7L, automatic, non t-top, digital dash car. I could have replaced the engine, had the original color sprayed, and had a nice car. Guess I'll just have to keep looking. There aren't many advertised right now in San Diego.

And there's more...
The interior didn't look too shabby for a 22 year old car. But you be the judge. The seller claimed that everything worked in the digital dash. Since I live in San Diego, I was going to go up this weekend and take a closer look. It was already sold on Thursday at the height of our biblical storm. That's one dedicated buyer!

A knock? Hell no, sounds like trouble to me.
You'll spend double that putting a decent motor in.

You are absolutely right
I agree with kkingsrulee that replacing or rebuilding the motor would have cost twice the asking price of the car, but it was completely original. If you wanted a nice car, the engine may have to come out anyway. This was a great starting point at a fair price. The restoration of the body and paint would be a few thousand in itself. But it is harder to find Firebirds (let alone GTAs) with a 350 from the factory with all systems intact. At least here in SoCal it is and you can see just how fast this got snatched up.

Got my 88 GTA for $475 off Craigslist in Winchester, VA, thanks to a tip from a TGO member.
It is also pretty clean, but they tore up the steering column trying to solve a VATS issue. I'm going to spend a few bucks getting it road-worthy, but I was happy to get the car for that price!

I knew there were some good deals out there. Are you in the LA area? I really would have liked to have checked out the '88 GTA, but being down in San Diego meant waiting for the weekend and it was sold by then. So when the deal is good, you have to strike quickly.
