1/2 price weekend at PYP in SFV
Beginning today, the 3rd of July, it's 1/2 price weekend at the PYP yard on Pendleton at Glenoaks in Sunland(north San Fernando Valley). I stopped in for a visit today, and I found a few things of interest that some people might wanna know about.
Firstly, and the best thing, was a freshly-dumped 1989 Formula 350 with t-tops(red, but was originally white). It's been made to look like a "sleeper," no decals and a flat hood(black with a bird), so at first glance, it looks like a base bird(except for its 16" wheels, all still there, and its spoiler). But the VIN(1G2FS) and the engine code(8) verify it's a Formula. The body was pretty sad, but nearly everything else was intact and good: The L98 was complete(including its entire TPI intake and serpentine drive); computer still in place; good radiator; good dual fans; tranny; 9-bolt PBR rearend(even the rotors were still shiny!); guessing a 3.27 because the car had dual cats(though the cats had been removed by an exhaust job); 140mph/8000rpm instrument cluster; t-tops were still in place; the headliner appeared to still be solid(needed recovering, though); WS6 sway bars; and as I said, even the Formula wheels(painted black) were still there(because of the factory "locking" lug nuts).
There was also a 1988 Formula 5-speed with t-tops, although the body was done-up completely like a TA. This one was black. The VIN tag showed FS(a base bird) with engine F(TPI), meaning it's a Formula. But the VINs on the door jambs(which match each other) show FW(a TA) with engine E. So this car, whatever it is/was, has been pieced together somewhere along the way. The engine and tranny were gone, so I couldn't verify those(although it had a factory hole in the tranny tunnel). But the 3.45 9-bolt disc rearend was still in place(verified by the tag on the cover and by wheel rotation: 3 1/2 rotations of the pinion yoke to 1 rotation of the wheel). This one still had its 140mph/8000rpm instrument cluster, and its full set of Formula wheels, too.
There were two 1986 LB9 cars with complete engines(though one was missing its plenum and runners). One was a Z and the other was a TA. The cool thing about this TA's 140mph/8000rpm instrument cluster was that the speedo was the no-kph-type, so it has a nice, clean look(and it only showed something like 119,000 miles). This car's flat black aero wing was still in decent shape(though someone had tried to remove it, unsucessfully). There was no rearend in this car.
The only other thing of note was a nice, full set of 16" Z28 wheels on a blue '91/'92 RS. Edit: to state this more clearly, it's the wheels that were the '91/'92 Z28 type.
This was all by memory tonight, but I'm pretty sure I've covered it all, or at least, the best stuff.
And I stopped at the other big yard in the valley last week... the UPP on Penrose, near Telfair and Tuxford. There were several good thirdgens there, too, though I don't specifically remember what. So if anyone makes the trip to the valley this weekend, plan to hit both yards.

1/2 price in Wilmington as well. It's a good weekend to junkyard shopping!

Oh god I hope those 9 bolts are still there. I need a new posi and I want a new gear ratio! Just to double check though I can swap in a 3 series carrier if I have a 2 series carrier right?

You can swap the entire rear end with no problems. But you cannot put 3-series gears into a 2-series rear end, unless you swap the posi unit in, too.
And remember if you swap rear ends you need to change the speedo gears in the tailshaft of the transmission, too.

Re: 1/2 price weekend at PYP in SFV
did you see the convertible firebird with the 2.8 with carburetor at the sun valley PYP? I got the horn button out of it but I kinda did not find much else I was looking for a half way decent steering wheel without graffiti or leaking the one in the convertible bright yellow graffiti all the others were leaking the goo real bad. I need to send mine in for re-leathering.... as for UPP the cars in there are the mostly junk I have ever seen not a straight piece of sheet metal anywhere at least the cars in PYP they are for the most part straight I do not pick from totaled cars. I was there saturday.
