Its alive!! Got my 3rd gen running

Big thanks to Alex. If it wasnt for his help, support and making me drive his very cleeeen GTA, then I would probably would not have let my TA sit on the side of the house for another 8 years!

Car was docked with a bum tranny in the summer of I think 1998. About three years ago Alex donated a functional Transmission that I got some buddies to swap in. Eventually, the car kept not wanting to start. Turns out it was the fuel pump. Funny, TPI doest run on 12 PSI of fuel. After a few grewling hours in the sun, car runs and actually got a thumbs up from Alex. Heheh.

Short story short - should be getting this car back on the road here real soon. We got a part II now where we will clean up the fluids, etc. Looking forward to meeting some of you guys at some meets. I'm very old school. I know Dwayne, Kevin, Don, Lon, Brett, Manny, Brittany and a few others from back in the days of the old sc3gfb.org, lol. Did I spell that right??

Here's some pics and even a quick vid.

Is that one of those "KITT" noses?

I see a number of boneyard runs in your future.

What year is that thing? Later door panels and taillights, digital dash...

Well, apparently your work is only just beginning.

Short history:

1987 Pontiac Trans Am
5.0 / 305 TPI
T Top
Automatic
WS6 Package

Mods/Upgrades:

Ditched the “273 gear’d / Drum brake / Dogg legg’d” rear end for a “Posi / Disc Brake 372 gear’d” rear end”
Lost the GTA-ish hood for a Blister one (Kitt inspired).
Replaced a real ripped up stock nose for the KITT Nose
Lost the Analog Gauges and installed the Digital Dash
Added an Adj Pan Hard Rod
All new Poly Sway endlinks & body bushings
Wonder Bar
Sub Frame Connectors
New Sensa-trac Front and rear Shocks/Struts
Eibach Springs

……..And lastly a New HI OUTPUT Walbro fuel Pump!!

Car “was” that dark blue with silver ground effects. That two tone was pretty popular, so I’m sure you can visualize it. Old paint was pretty bad, so I sanded it down about 3 years ago and took some flat black primer to it. It looked great, for about a year. Now what you see is the fading of that primer.

It had the wrap around spoiler and GTA Cross lace rims. It was almost a full GTA I’m thinking. Just no leather. Just no badging.

I was 18 when I first got the car. My mom passed away when I was 15. She really loved the 3rd gen cars and of course, growing up watching Knight Rider, I did too. She never got her third gen, but was saving up for one at the time. She passed away in 1991. When I was 18 (circa 1994) I wanted to get that 3rd gen and dedicate it to her in a way. I eventually came up with a KITT inspired name “ILMODC”. KITT or K.I.T.T. was Knight Industries Two Thousand. Well. I decided on I.L.M.O.D.C. = In loving Memory of Donna Cervantes.

Car had only 55K on the odometer. Bought it from a guy in the military. He was the first owner and he had to sell it as he was starting a family. It was registered in Texas.

The car was driving pretty much every day then on out when the transmission went out in I think the late summer of 1998. There the car was parked on the side of my girlfriends house (whom later became my wife).

From that point until now, I would start her up every once in a while. I’d even go for a quick run around the block. The 3rd/4th gear clutches were done, so it only had 1st & 2nd gears. I changed the oil a few years ago and put in some “motor up”. That stuff works. It really cleans it out. About two years ago, I gave her a sea foam treatment, plugs, wires, cap, rotor an such. About that same time, I towed it over to Pierce Collage where I had Alex’s donated transmission installed by a few buddies.

Over the last year, it got harder and harder to start. It would require more and more cranking. Eventually we checked the fuel pressure and discovered at 12psi, its not gonna start. After further diagnostics, did the fuel filter, then the fuel pump.

During this time, I’ve owned a 1995 Trans Am that I dubbed’ ILMODC 2, the next Generation. That car was just to hold me over until I got the 1987 up and running. Well, after a rebuilt motor, 4 transmissions and 12 mpg (thanks LT4 hot cam!!) the 4th gen was sold for a 2004 Saturn ION Redline. Supercharged 4 banger. Not a bad lil’ car. But it does make me miss rear wheel drive.

Anyway, that’s a lot of sharing for one day. Heheh. I’ve shared more here then I think I have in my own club.

Here’s some more pics from over the years:
