I had my L98, zz3 cam, edelbrock header, edelbrock base & slp runner 1991 Z28 smogged today....looked very good, except HC...it matched the max allowed @ 108. A pass is a pass, but is it possible to lean-out that area of engine operation (with prom tuning) to help at emissions test time?
Thanks for any help.

Car: 1982 Trans Am & 1982 Corvette
Engine: L-98 with LO-3 induction. 350 CFI
Transmission: 5 speed and vette has 700r4
Axle/Gears: 373's in T/A .. vette unknown
Trans87

The ZZ-4 heads are same as vette heads with no EGR passage. How did you get around that or did you feed the egr valve off the exhuast like a vette does. I'm asking cause I remember when my EGR valve wasn't working NO was sky high and failed.

Congrats on the pass anyways, my TBI conversion in my 82 trans am passed with ease as well

If the camshaft is mild enough, you can pass the sniffer without a working EGR. But you wont pass the visual if its not there.

If you lean out the engine at that point, the hydrocarbons will go up even higher.

(The thread you replied to was over 3 years old and Trans87 doesnt own that car anymore. I split your posts into this new thread. Here is the old one:

I thought excessive hydrocarbons was an indication of un-burned fuel passing out of the combustion chamber.....how should I address the high HC? By the way, the 108 HC reading was at the 15 mph (2459 rpm, 1st gear 700R4, 3.73:1 axle ratio) segment of the test; 25 mph segment (2174 rpm, 2nd gear) measured 52 ppm / max allowed 83 ppm.
I have a mail-order tune from PCMforless, which feels pretty good at most operating parameters, but I sure would like to get a real-time tune, one that I could use as a baseline then DIY PROM myself (you busy Kevin91Z?!) I'm in Palmdale, CA.
Again, thanks for the input & help.
