My car didn't pass smog yesterday. Does anyone have any recommendations of a place to get it diagnosis. The guy didn't say anything of having cut-outs in front of the cats. So if you guys know of a place, let me know. Thanx
Peace Out,

Can you post your numbers here to show why it failed, or did he fail it for visual? If he failed it for visual, he should have told you why.

If you failed on both items then it sounds like your catalytic converter is bad. Or, you could have a leaky injector. Putting a new cat on it should be enough to get it to pass.

Can the catlyic be bad though I think its been a year and half, I think. That it was installed. How do you check if you have a leaky injector??Thanx a lot, I appreciaite it.

If you have other problems with your car, yes the converter can go bad quickly.

Two ways to check for a leaky injector. Put a fuel pressure gauge on it, start, the car, verify the reading at 38-44 psi, turn off the engine, and check if the pressure drops. If the injectors are good, the pressure will hold steady. If one is leaking, the pressure will drop.

Or, check each injector with an ohm meter while they are hot (engine off). They should be between 12-16 ohms. Anything less than 10 ohms and its a bad one.

When we built my T/A we put a custom chip in it. We tested it under every condition we could think of, before we burned the "final" chip. I went on the Idyllwild cruise witrh the club and under engine breaking coming down off the hill, my car backfired and blew out chunks of cat. We found that the high vacuum from my mild cam resulted in my engine going extremely lean on the overrun. We have corrected the problem, but the then new cat is history. Anything going wrong that affects your engine's operation can kill a cat. That is one reason why they recommend that you get your car looked at immediately when you get a check engine light.

A little more detailed info. on this. If the injectors are all good, then the psi. will SLOWLY drop - over a period of a few minutes or so. IIRC, it should be around 20 minutes or more. If an injector is leaking, the psi. will bleed down very quickly.
