V6 -> V8 swap and emissions in Phoenix...
Hi,
Anyone know what I'll get to deal with at emissions testing with a 1992 Firebird that originally had a V6, but is now a V8?
I can probably put all the required emissions equipment on it except EGR since I have a Stealth Ram. Also the cam is a 270 / 276 (advertised duration) on a 108 LCA (I've heard of people passing smog with bigger cams).
I know the test number that would cover the car is IM147 (that's what my 91 caddy was covered by last year), which was a roller test and a gas cap pressure test. They didn't seem too interested in doing a visual on the engine.
Thanks!

well if they don't do a visual, then hopefully you have a custom tune which will lower your emissions at the indicated testing threshold...

I made it through the sniffer with a HSR, no EGR, and non functioning AIR with the thermostat stuck closed causing the car to almost overheat during the test. It still passed (barely but it passed). If it passes the sniffer and the gas cap pressure test, they very likely will not look for anything else under the hood.
Personally, I would have failed my car as soon as the hood was opened and the cog driven F1A came into view. Or after it broke the test equipment the third time.... but they kept going until they could give it a pass.
So it is very much a possibility to pass emissions in AZ with most of the equipment missing or not hooked up if the tune is dialed in correctly.

ODBII cars are even easier. If it passes the computer scan, they don't check anything else at all so you can remove all the emissions equipment, dial in the tune so the codes won't show up and still get a pass.
