Florida Gathering!!

Re: Florida Gathering!!
Flushed my radiator yesterday but have been thinking of buying an aluminum 2 core, will probably wait till i'm ready to do engine swap. Need to change the hub bearings, I heard them clicking yesterday. Also want to pull my interior and buy new carpet and seats. Will probably only be able to do the carpet though.

Okay...main problem...she keeps cutting off on me still. But, now at least, she starts right back up no problem. Another annoying problem, when I run the A/C, I smell clean fuel. I run through a tank easily, so I'm thinking it is certainly leaking somewhere.
Already replaced:
MAF sensor and relay
Fuel Regulator
IAC
Dist. cap and rotor
All relays on firewall
O2 sensor
TPS
Plugs/wires
Fuel injectors
EGR
Fuel pump
Fuel filter
*Timing chain, radiator, and A/C condenser (not related, I know)*

I used to have a Trans Am that stalled like that. Turns out the plenum needed to be cleaned-out on my TPI, or so I was told. It didn't stall any more after that so I didn't really care what the problem was.
I don't know why you'd smell fuel when you run the A/C. That's pretty odd IMO. Do you have a charcoal canister on it still?
I found that my fuel tank was leaking at the filler neck. It was cracked there. So you might want to check that. It looked like there were stains where the two came together from where the fuel had been leaking out. I can provide pics if necessary. I was getting fairly poor mileage before I fixed it too. I hope some of this helps.

Re: Florida Gathering!!
i had a similar problem with the wifes car. i replaced just about everything. It ended up being the dist. Not the module , cap , or rotor, but the dist itself.
Ive heard that its becoming common as these cars get older.
As far as the gas smell. you have the windows up with the ac on, so i would take a guess at the tank breather by the rearend, or a broken vac line up to the canister. or what dprest said, the neck is leaking.

Re: Florida Gathering!!
Replaced front bearings today...the cotter pin broke though so I need to go buy another before I can continue putting everything together. The car is also slowly leaking coolant. Will have to climb under sometime this week to see if I can see where from. Will probably gut the interior this week and give it a good cleaning also. I'm hoping to have parts of the car repainted in September. What are you all working on now?

Re: Florida Gathering!!
I got mine insured and on the road, been driving it around town for a couple of days now. Vacuumed the heck out of it (it sat for almost 4 years), there was a HUGE ants' nest in one of the rear seats. I've been searching and researching on how to fix my dashpad and console. Hopefully I'll get those done this week. I was able to remove all lug nuts, 2 were completely "welded" in place sort-a-speak, but I got them out this morning. Now I can clean and check brake pads, etc. I also gave it a nice and needed wash on saturday!
Now I'm pricing and looking for $$$ to retrofit and recharge my A/C 'cause I do love it! I'll be removing the seats, carpet, etc. and do a thorough cleaning inside too. I've got a couple of holes on the front floor pans from leaky t-tops. Then, as I get more $$$ I'll replace the 19lbs injectors with new 22lbs and block the 9th injector too. I'm gonna need to buy and replace the rear tires (dry roted). I'm not sure if I'll be able to do anything to the body in preparation for paint (I would REALLY love to do that b4 the gathering). That's pretty much if for the GTA for now. The Camaro is a different story!

Wiring! *throws-up in mouth a little*
I am almost done with it though. So that makes me happy. Hopefully I will be putting the engine in this weekend if all goes as planned. I can't wait.
Don't worry about the wiring nuts. They will all be removed. I am just planning out all of my common ground & ignition wires. Everything will be soldered & shrink-wrapped when I get it the way I want it.

Re: Florida Gathering!!
that's a great question. Let's see, I've got the engine and tranny ready to come out but I'm waiting on my buddy to let me borrow his engine hoist again. I need to replace seals on the tranny and fix an old fluid leak. I need to check the motor because I lost oil pressure and I heard the valve lifters ticking from lack of oil. Good thing it was iddleing on the driveway. Hopefully it's nothing too bad, but I also need valve seals and just a good checking of everything inside. I need to clean and paint engine bay off course and replace the radiator and fuel tank. I've got pretty much all the interior bought but it hasn't been installed. I need to do lots of sanding and prepping for paint. It really looks like crap! timewise it is doable, but $$$ I'm not sure. We'll give it a good shot!!! Thanks for the encouragement, that's what kept me going these last 3 months since you announced this gathering and got my GTA back on the road as a result!!! Thanks!!!

Re: Florida Gathering!!
Awesome, I hope you are able to bring it out. At least we'll have 1 2nd gen out there. I just posted the event on FlaCarShows.com(thanks motobooks for the link), and i'm going to try to make a flyer sometime this week. Every 3rd saturday of the month here in Plant City is a big car show so I will pass out the flyer. There are plenty of 1st gens, some 2nd, probably 5 3rd gens i've seen total including a TTA that hasn't been taken care of very well.

Re: Florida Gathering!!
Not sure where it came from. I use to friends with someone who ordered the carpet, door weatherstripping, Spohn tubular K member, and Spohn wonderbar, then junked the car. So I stole it all for $200. The quality of the carpet is good. My install job, not so good.

Re: Florida Gathering!!
Same here. My trans swap took a long time and I had to custom build a lot for it. The torque arm crossmember, the trans crossmember, modify my Spohn torque arm, and a bunch other. I'd rather do that all over again than put carpet in the car.

Ive launched on a small shot and slicks a few times and it hung in there like a champ. with the new motor and a bigger shot, and aspirations of building a twin turbo 434 it was just time to upgrade. Ill be yanking it out and putting it in the wifes vert. I bought a used moser 9in awhile back and have been puttering around with it for awhile. i have a little bit of wheel well trimming to do first. ill be going from a 295/50-15 to a 325/50-15

Nope, and it sounds like you have done quite a bit to it. I know you have a 91-92 gfx-less, hardtop car which is exactly what I want for my next car........look forward to seeing it...will probably take after it after seeing it!!!!!!
I hear that. I'm nowhere near done, she has no idea how much I plan on doing...let alone how much it costs to do it. And she is already ready for having kids...I mean money killers...dang!!

hey guys, just a heads up, take some kind of bug spray/repellant, the bugs are ferocious out there, I was out to Ft Desoto with my group of buddies, this past sat for a bbq/beach day with our spouses, and it seemed like we were the lunch.
Jim, the scfba is dead and burried... I started a group on facebook for performance enthusiasts

Re: Florida Gathering!!
I finally got my A/C retrofited to ES-12 this evening and it's working fine. I need to try it for a few days before I'm absolutely sure the charge level is perfect, but I ran it for a good while tonight and it felt great. Now I have to keep working on the rest of the details in preparation for the trip up there. Maybe tomorrow my buddy will let me borrow the hoist to remove the Camaro's engine and tranny and try to get it all ready for the gathering. We'll see...

Can you tell me what ES-12 is? I was just getting ready to retrofit my Firebird to 134a after fixing my truck's AC system.
It would be really nice to have AC sooner rather than later.

Re: Florida Gathering!!
I would say its about the same as R-12 in my case. I had to put a can of oil and stop leak included in the kit because the compressor was emptied out when I removed it to weld the A/C bracket 'cause I dropped the whole engine from the stand right before installation day. So I put those two small cans of oil and stop leak plus two 5oz. cans and a little from a third 5oz. can of ES-12 (the actual refrigerant) just to be on the safe side. The thing is that my car never blew as much air out the vents as I think it ought to blow. I may need a new blower but I'll drive it in this heat for a few days and see what happens. My GTA is black and it has t-tops, so it doesn't get any harder than that for an A/C to be tested lol. Well, at least my interior is still tan instead of black hahaha.
around and you'll find out more information about it. I ended up buying it from ebay 'cause it was a couple bucks cheaper and included everything including the hose with a gage, pocket thermometer, etc. Here's the link to the kit I bought: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=110931361701
Hope it works.

Re: Florida Gathering!!
You're welcome! I had to replace my radiator this week becuase I installed the fans too close to it and one of them made some holes, it was just stupid. I hate spending money that I don't have. Now I'm dealing with a fuel pump issue where it whines when its running at normal temp and then it smells like gas vapors, there's a lot of pressure built inside the tank and it even dies sometimes. On top of that my starter gets heat soaked and needs to cool off before I can start it again. I'm troubleshooting it now.

Re: Florida Gathering!!
Oh man, I wish I would have know before, I would have gone with my kids. I was busy last night after spinning 1/2 dozen times while doing about 60 mph down the turnpike south bound about a mile from Okeechobee Road exit. I took the GTA for a test drive from Kendall (Bird Road exit) and drove north on the turnpike to 836 East to I-95 North to the turnpike extension heading south back to the house and after sitting for a while in traffic due to a spun suv we (my youngest daughter and I) started to head home again. Rain started to come down heavily so we all slowed down. As I passed a large SUV in front of me I hit a puddle of water and lost control of my rear end as it started spinning out of control. It was soooooo scary until we finally hit the steel cable barrier on the side of the canal with the rear bumper, we basically "backed into it". Thank God none of us was injured, the car has body damage of course but it never died on me, car was still running, a/c working, no broken glass, all lights were still working and I was even able to drive it off the ditch where it was stuck to the steel cables with the assistance of the SUV's driver who stopped to help us. My posi-traction deffinitely helped me drive it out of the muddy grass. A state trooper stoped and asked my daughter if we were ok and the moment she told him yes, he said "ok" and took off: I mean, no help, no call to an emergency rescue vehicle, not even turning the troopers lights to caution other drivers to slow down while I took it out of the ditch, nothing!!! Our tax dollars at work!!! Again, thank God for his protection, 'cause all sorts of things could have happened and it could have been a very different outcome. My car is still driveble, I drove it home last night and then later to get my son from a friend's house. I'm fixing to go and check the scene in daytime just to take some pics for my "memoirs". So now I have some more body work to be done before paint... but nothing that cannot be fixed.

Re: Florida Gathering!!
Will you be attending this event????? Haven't seen you in a while, would be good to catch up on things. What is the name/link to the facebook page? I'd like to make those performance enthusiasts aware of this event!

That nose looks like the one on the prototype yellow turbo 4.3 car, and IROC GTZ or something like that.
Glad I won't be the only one with mismatched paint and body...

Re: Florida Gathering!!
Okay guys, the IROC is up for sale I guess. I am getting a 2013 SS2 with the RS package, and hopefully I will get it by the meet. It is being ordered, so I don't know how long it will take. If I still have the IROC by then too, I will be getting her down there someway or another as well.
