Re: My 91 camaro rebuild
I was looking for pics of the Camaro headers with the Jet Hot but no luck.
I did come across pics of it and another race car that he and Jack built.
Nothing 'special' just a couple of MONSTERS... LOL
EDIT: don't get any smart ideas guys, this is not a Auto Repair 'business'.
This is my buddies 'personal' auto/machine shop.

Re: My 91 camaro rebuild
I've got the sand blast cabinet at the house and planned on blasting both the headers, brackets, fuel pump block off, and timing chain cover. I other parts are going on the block when i paint it red with eastwood ceramic coat so they will match. I'm only worried about the different look between painted brackets against polished top end and coated headers... I think they would stand out a little too much instead of blending into the shine. I get the clear coating part which i think i may do this time to everything thats polished...

@Drew
Don't forget to paint the brake booster, master cylinder and gear box. It's
those little things that make a diff. Also rather then spend spend spend on
tape, it's much cheaper to use aluminum foil on things you normally tape
up when your painting. Also if you need to do some touch up of the red,
you can get AJ Foyt Paint & Supplies to match the color and put it in a
spray can. That is what i used to touch up the red in the engine
compartment.

Just throwing some ideas out there for ya bud.

Yes i have a blast cabinet at the house... it is how i have blasted every part that came off so they can be repainted to go back on. I see what your saying but imagine your intake polished like mine is now... then you'll see what i'm saying... painted brackets next to everything else being polished.... Its gunna look off i think. Atleast your intake matches the brackets mine won't... I suppose i could leave the headers painted and that would match the brackets if i painted them as well.

How much blasting do you have to do?
I have a rube-goldberg sort of blaster that works well for small jobs,
but you'd need you're own compressor. PM if you're interested in
borrowing it.

Re: My 91 camaro rebuild
ummm not mine to lend bro... I just have access to a blast cabinet via my neighbor. What do you want blasted? Your brackets? I'm thinking about just cleaning mine up and repainting them rather than the ceramic coat way, however i am going to ceramic coat the headers once i blast them which i will actually start blasting hopefully today after work.

i also just use silver header paint. last set of headers i built got wrapped with the new type of exhaust wrap. its be made with pulverized lava rock. work real well at keeping the heat in and and looks good too.

I'll also be able to get jup's monte carlo brackets blasted and expoxied as well so bro look for them to be coming back sometime next week..

Re: My 91 camaro rebuild
Quick update.... Engine is painted and has begun reassembly. I have all new sensors in the block and all new mounting brackets. I'm still working on the headers and the intake so i can't put it all back together and running yet. I will however be able to put the motor back in its place which will happen on THIS saturday. I'll post up some pictures when i get home from work.

Re: My 91 camaro rebuild
Just some info on header coatings. I've personally had Jet Hot coatings put on headers for 4 different vehicles, and 2 more jet hot coated headers on my living room floor right now, waiting to be installed on an S-10 and my bird. So, 4 tried and true and 2 waiting to be put into use sets of headers with their coating. Obviously I'm a fan of their product, so take my biased information with a grain of salt if you like. The silver Jet Hot looks good at first but it will fade, I speak from experience. For your engine, where you want that polished aluminum look, dont do Jet-Hot, because the initial shine wont last. Most of my Jet Hot coated products have been their "black" coating.
As for ceramic, I have had a few close friends over the years who had various brands of ceramic coated headers. Some of them faded, some did not. I dont know if you care about heat disipation or not, but no ceramic coating I have ever seen have kept under the hood temperatures down like Jet-hot coated headers do. They aren't even close. There is a reason its got one of the, if not the best name in the business, but you pay for it. My last set of coatings ran me nearly $300 for long tubes, no Y-pipes, just the headers. They offer several different colors of their coatings, but again, their "polished" silver coating will lose luster after a few months, at least mine did.

Re: My 91 camaro rebuild
ok now a good set of ceramic coated headers will keep the heat down. i have run ceramic for years and they have all been a better heat transfer than just regular coating. and jethot coats headers in ceramic as well and it cost a lot more. and i have purchased good ones and have never had the turn. and from experience and from reading an awful lot the true ceramic coatings disipate heat better.

Re: My 91 camaro rebuild
Well for those of us who may have had some doubts about how the 'RED'
engine would look i just have to say AWESOME. I myself was not so sure it
would turn out so nice but seeing is believing. Drew hit on a great combination
only because of all the black in his engine compartment that red motor POPS.
It appears his vision is working out extremely well and progress is coming along
nicely. In a way it was a good thing he had motor issues which has turned into
a motor rebuild and engine bay cleanup. I look forward to seeing his car at
our next car meet, however, if she's not ready at the time then it's only
because he is taking his time to do things right and we can't knock him for that.
Keep up the good work Drew.

Re: My 91 camaro rebuild
I decided today to put off polishing the intake and put on the painted one for the time being because i'm in a bit of a time crunch. I will however continue to polish the other one i have in the hopes that maybe i'll put it on. Tomorrow i will button up the intake and reassemble the top end of the motor and all fresh fluids. Headers are in the process of being refinished. I saw today that the factory missed a well at the collector so i gotta fix that before they get coated. With any luck i should have her fired up by friday / saturday.... I'll post up some pics when i get more of her built up along with the intake i'm polishing... I'll put it up to a vote on whether or not to stick with the painted or polished... once i post pics...

Re: My 91 camaro rebuild
don't think its going to be fired up by Saturday.. I still have to repolish my upper intake and runners along with the valve covers. Also i have my headers blasted and fixed because i found holes the factory didn't weld.. Now tomorrow i will blast the repaired area and take them to the paint booth and respray them and cure. Then i get to polish those.. yeah!! after that everything goes back together and gets primed up. Some electrical repair here and there and then... FIRE IN THE HOLE !!!

OMG!!! i used this stuff from eastwood called tlc colorguard on my headers today... fair warning to everyone... its crap... I now have to reblast my headers and paint them again. I'm kinda stuck for time some i'm going back to VHT aluminum high heat paint... i'm just ready to hear it run and drive at this point... maybe i need to take a step away from it before i push and cut corners....

the paint to 'last long time' and maintain the nice look. If you can't use your
oven then call Byron and schedule something. He has a oven at the shop just
for stuff like that.

Thanks bro i've got access to a paint booth where i'll probably be painting them and cooking them. I was able to last night repolish all the aluminum and put it back on the engine. I also restabbed the dizzy and started running the wires. I think i'm going to run them like the factory for now so that i can get the car running right without changing too much that could cause a problem later. I can change it all when i finish the polish of my other intake for the car and put that on.

Re: My 91 camaro rebuild
Primed the engine the other day and noticed no oiling on the right bank of the block. I called and talked to the engine builder who said that my priming tool probably isn't completing the collar portion of the cam shaft bearing and distributing the oil to that side. He reccommended starting and running it for 5 mins with the valve cover off to check for oiling on the passenger side. I know the drivers side of the block oils up great from when i primed it. Last night i repaired most of the wiring but can't find my gm pin removal tool. I also put on the headers....

Re: My 91 camaro rebuild
I believe ASIA said it best... Its the final countdown! got the exhaust tightened up and the wiring all terminated. Restabbed the distributor, battery, spark plugs, spark plug wires, coil, and alternator. Got all this done by around 8:30 last night and tried to start her up but i think i'm probably 180 off on my timing and the battery died from sitting up too long. Needless to say i plugged in a battery charger and filled up some of the fluids i forgot to do before trying to start her up. I need to still clean her up before i'm all done under the hood and moving on to other things.

Alright!
What else does it need before you start driving it around?
I can't wait to see it.

Re: My 91 camaro rebuild
I've got to redo the y pipe since it was done when the frame was bent. Now that the frame is straight it hits on the passengerside floor board. I've done a quick set of the timing but noticed that my temp gauge in the dash can't be reading right. Its says after 4 minutes at idle its 240 degrees... Not possible when i can touch the radiator and the intake and not burn myself. I'm going to get a mechanical water temp gauge and work that in to see what it really reads. My fans aren't kicking on yet but it hasn't run that long yet just the first 15 for the break in. Topped off all the fluids and even gave her a bath.

been kinda hot and not really wanting to work on her... she runs though... Tightened up the exhaust enough to the point where it barely touches the car but i did set the timing sorta.
