HOUSTON CRUISE up to GEORGETOWN June 26th

Alright Houston guys here it is. Saturday, June 26th at 8:30AM I am going to be in the Mall parking lot, near the "X" @ 9800 Hempstead Road Houston, TX 77092(thats the physical address to the Chic-Fill-A in the mall, but I will be near the X, not Chic-Fill-A)

At 9AM, me, my wife and anyone else brave enough to follow us will leave for the Georgetown event(gas up before you get to the mall please). It is a 171 mile drive from the mall and will take almost exactly 3 hours according to Yahoo-maps AND Mapquest to drive the 171 miles. Giddings, TX is roughly halfway there, or about 85 miles. We will be stopping there for bathroom, gas, etc, before undergoing the 2nd half of the journey. I have us going along 290, then to 183 then to 35. I chose that route because there are no toll roads, and according to the map sites, we only lose about 5 minutes by avoiding them. If someone has a better route, I am happy to hear it. This was just the best route I could find on those map programs. If you think your car may have problems, let me know in the mall parking lot, so we can exchange phone numbers. This way as soon as you notice a problem, I can stop with you. We can decide how to proceed from there when we "cross that bridge".

So 9am we leave, a 3 hour drive + 1 hour for stopping for gas and other unforseen circumstances puts us in Georgetown in plenty of time for the show.

Chime in if you are interested in taking part in our 171 mile cruise. Hope to see you there, Rodney & Savannah.

PS: for those interested here is a map of the route:

Me too.

Will there be any support vehicles going? Anything with a tow hitch?
I'll probably bring my tow bar...just in case.

I wasnt planning on bringing my S-10 however, I do have access to a trailer and can head back to Spring and grab the truck and the trailer if someone is in desperate need for a tow. So at the worst you will be waiting on the side of the road for a few hours until I get back.

Re: HOUSTON CRUISE up to GEORGETOWN June 26th

im still a maybe. want to see if more from here are actually going to show up.

as for the support vehicle. what is you idea on that?
someone that is going to splurge for gas just to see if someone breaks down and them tow them back?
or someone that is taking another vehicle(truck)that is going to carry all the tools for everyone, maybe some gas, and other aminities that all want to put in it. either way it is going to cost someone 2 vehicles worth of gas or someone that is going to spend gas money just in case.

we are willing to be the second one with our avalanche. we carry all the tools we can with a jack, some gas, brakeclean, and towels. but we cant afford 2 vehicles in gas either. single income. lemme know if some are thinking about #2 and are willing to pitch in a little fuel money. but hey lemme know what yall are thinking.

Re: HOUSTON CRUISE up to GEORGETOWN June 26th

I've been meaning to ask this....

To go 171 miles normally doesnt require a stop for gas. One92RS, you have mentioned a stop for gas on the way and its got me wondering, do you have something that will actually burn up 15 or so gallons of gas in under 170 highway miles?

I was thinking about it and our mostly stock 90 formula could likely make the trip there and back without stopping for gas. I know many modded cars wont get as much mileage as a stock L98 but I am having a hard time imagining an F-body using a whole tank gas in 170 miles. I dont mean to put you on the spot or anything, I just want to know if we actually have someone planning on going with us who will need to stop frequently for gas, or if you were just looking out for people like that who may want to come too.

Even if we dont need to stop halfway there for gas, I would still like to stop anyway for bathroom, stretching our legs, etc..

That would be me!

My V6 tank only takes 12 gallons to fill and with a 4000+ stall 3.31 gears and no overdrive I'm lucky to get 10 miles to the gallon. So I'm figuring on 4 visits to the gas station that day.

Re: HOUSTON CRUISE up to GEORGETOWN June 26th

ok you kinda are putting me on the spot. first off the middle way stop was your idea. second of all. some of our cars are far from stock. mine being one. if mine was still tbi then no i wouldnt need to stop. mine is a 130000 mile worn out 305 with a carb.13 or 14 tops. thats on a good day. some of us are highly modified such as esc and will need to stop more than once. so the stop is going to be needed no matter what. there will be some that can make it and the ones that cant. so i figure there will be at least 2 groups. some that need to make one stop and the others that need to make more. hey ill hang back with the ones that need to stop more as mine seems to have a few little gremlins. SO IN A GRAND SCHEME. like i mentioned before. it is going to take way more than 3 hours for some to complete. if we are going to be one big group then yes up to 4 hours will be needed each way. that is what i was trying to tell people that just cant seem to understand the whole thing. some will make it in 3 hours. others will take a bit longer. i was planning on being on the road past that by 8:30am. so we need to figure this all out,. best scenario is there will be 2 groups.
1st-go all the way one stop
2nd-go there needing multi stops which will be the one im in.

nobody answered on the support vehicle. we need to know. an 02 avalanche could make it there and back for the most part if we arent acting stupid. which i wont if i want to come home. and some of us arent stock. so the fuel mileage is going to suffer for some of us.

Re: HOUSTON CRUISE up to GEORGETOWN June 26th

i'm not too keen on the support vehicle idea, tools are a must be i'll just give AAA a call rather than pay for a support vehicle

and we need to definitely need to stop for gas, running a group of third gens low on fuel in the summer heat is not a good idea knowing the fuel pump issues on these cars

Re: HOUSTON CRUISE up to GEORGETOWN June 26th

In the event I break down and need a tow, I'll gladly pay for someones gas but I wouln'd go if I didn't think I could make it and I'll already be spending $150.00 -> $200.00 at the pump that day so my fuel budget is maxed out.

I would think one stop half way there and one halfway back should take care of everybody.

Re: HOUSTON CRUISE up to GEORGETOWN June 26th

Can I suggest something for gas stops?

Whoever is leading the convoy needs to carry a cell phone. Whoever is somewhere in the convoy can cal the "leader"...."Gas Stop!"

If the leader pulls over, the rest will follow. Nobody would just keep going. Rather or not people need gas, they can take advantage of the stop to hit the bathroom/grab a drink or snack/stretch their legs.

Just a suggestion, based on the convoys I've been in & people have gotten "lost".

Re: HOUSTON CRUISE up to GEORGETOWN June 26th

+1 on what steven said, cruises suck when you cant communicate well.

i know on the TPE/HPD and similar cruises we've used 2-way radios and it was great because everyone can talk to everyone all the time. BUT everyone already has a cell phone so if people don't have a radio (or want to spend a few bucks on a radio) phones will suffice. i have a radio and a cell phone so whatever the majority wants works for me!

Re: HOUSTON CRUISE up to GEORGETOWN June 26th

One92RS, sorry for stepping on your toes. I did need to hear what you and ESC said though. Ok, so the 1 stop I originally planned is not sufficent. I hate to break up our small cruise into 2 smaller cruises though. What if we changed the stop schedule. Is everyone ok with stopping in Brenham(approx 65 miles out from the mall), and then stopping again at Elgin(approx another 60 miles past Brenham), then the final stop would be Georgetown, (approx 50 miles). Thats the 4 round trip stops that some people will need and if we leave at 9am, thats 4 hours to get there. Will this work guys or do we need more time?

As for the support vehicle. How about this, I will chip in $20 for gas towards the support vehicle, if that is something we collectivly decide is something we want.

Let me know guys. We have a few months still remaining to nail down these details and really this topic is the place to do it. So, let out all your concerns and apprehensions. I'm eager to make this work for everyone. As I said, my vote is to have 1 large cruise group, but what do you all want?

1 large group with an anticipated 4 hour drive

OR

2 smaller groups, one 3 hour, and 1, 4 hour

Wow you all type faster than I do. Stephen's idea is fantastic. As mentioned I am happy to exchange phone numbers with whoever wants to, and after hearing Stephen, hopefully most of us will. I'm fine to lead us there unless someone in partictular really wants that task...?

Good points/ideas made so far, keep em' coming please.

Re: HOUSTON CRUISE up to GEORGETOWN June 26th

just offering the truck as a support vehicle. it can carry our tools and a floor jack plus some gas and other stuff. heck if there are a bunch of us that go that would be like 3 to 5 dollars each. cheap insurance. the double stop would be great. i know brenham mom lives there. when we start getting closer to the time we need to give out numbers and figure a lead vehicle. ill even be bringin hoses, clamps, brakeclean, and some rags. i have a gallon or two of green antifreeze. ill throw together a tool kit thats perty good. if others want to bring a tool box and put it in the bed of the truck you are more than welcome. now that is what i call a support vehicle.

For the communication thing.. Too bad we're not 2nd gens, we could go all Smokey & the Bandit & install CBs.. & grow awesome mustaches.

Ok, but not really, I have nothing productive to add here. Just felt like typing. Sorry.

I doubt I'll be able to make this trip but I am curious. Do y'all plan on being good speed limit abiding citizens or going to let a car or two with radar detectors take the lead & REALLY cruise? & I know I've seen some paranoidish posts about law enforcement being able to read what we post but umm.. C'mon if they're worried about a few cars making a one time cruise then hell I'll make sure I get to go & run 1st to get the cops out of the way.

That sounds like a really awesome idea! I'de be willing to be a lead car in a cruise where we did that, but I dont think that a 340 mile round trip cruise should be that one. What do you guys think?

Is this a 5mph over cruise or a 40mph over cruise? hehe

As much as I like triple digit driving, that would put me well into single digit mileage...

I can't make this (gotta work that weekend), but I can certainly vouch for the small tank aspect. 12 gallons isn't much when you have a 350. I stopped for gas 11 times in 2.5 days when I drove across the country.

That's pretty sweet. I remember when Adam came to one of our annual Houston thirdgen gatherings and was thinking about selling it (2002 I think). You still have the RamAir 1 hood and WS6 wheels?

yes i do i have kept everything intact that it had originaly on it. i did change to gtas black with fronts all the way around. it also was in a fender bander so i changed the bumpers to the earlier ones that i like more. i also had it repainted swaped a t56 in with the torque arm to cross member mount. im building the car slowly and will eventualy swap it to carb with a pretty stout small block. the guy i bought it from told me the car ran 12s at some point but i dont think thats true. thanks for replaying and if you have any info on the car i would appreciate it thanks everyone

Re: HOUSTON CRUISE up to GEORGETOWN June 26th

I am Adam62083. I happen to still be alive and kicking, and back in the Houston area since 2007. I changed my user name to Arctic WS6 a long time ago when thirdgen.org and 3rdgen.org split up.

That was my first car. I can tell you everything about it. And that it was in mint condition when I sold it. It has gone nothing but downhill from there.

It never sniffed anything close to 12s though. Its fastest time under my ownership was a 14.03. Not a bad time for a stock internal car with some bolt ons.

Mods were:

SLP shorty headers
SPD 52mm throttleboddy
Ported/Polished plenum/runners
2000 stall on the 700R4 (was rebuilt a bit more aggressively than factory)

The other mods were cosmetic - I put on the 91-92 TA foglights (complete with interior switch from a TA), ASCD Ram Air hood, and ROH wheels (17x9.5's all the way around).

Here are some pictures of it when it was under my care:

Back in college I also made a promotional video for 3rdgen.org. My (now yours) car starred in the video. I found it on youtube not too long ago.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rSKWIe4ZDjE

It also stars a lot of cars from the Houston area.

Let me know if you have any questions about the car by emailing StanleyXY@hotmail.com. I don't typically read this forum anymore so I likely won't see posts. It would be cool to meet up with some of the old crowd again like we used to do. I hope you wouldnt mind having a vette join the party though.

Re: HOUSTON CRUISE up to GEORGETOWN June 26th

im sorry to say but the car did go down hill, but thats all changed now. ive wanted a formula forever and even before my camaro got tboned i thought of trading it for a form. i found the car on craigslist, one night i called and it disaperd couldnt get a hold of the guy. kept searching and one sat at about nine it was posted again i called and my girlfreind made sure we made it down to pick it up. the trans was shot so we couldnt drive it up, we ended up pulling it with my s10 from corpus to san antonio. swaped in the t56, changed the wheels with fresh tires, changed the calipers, brakes, rotors all around.added torque arm to member mount, underdrive pulleys,stage2 clutch, true dual exhuast with bullets,410 gears, edelbrock runners.msd box, subframe connectors, panhard bar, tubular lcas gta taillights. i got kirkey aluminum seats waiting simpson seatbelts, edelbrock rpm heads and 400 block with a solid roller camshaft, racecraft k member, rack and pinion steering, 4inch cowlhood, big and little welds. i apologize if people dont like the bumpers but they are ones i like better and the others were trashed when it got hit in front of my house. thanks everyone im glad i got a response from you all and i will see you guys at the gathering, i also took the car to the track with 200thou miles best time was 14.5. i am horrilbe at racing stick but im sure it could do better and will do thanks again everyone

So its just 1 week away. Can we get a head count so I know how many people to expect at the parking lot before I/we head out?

Re: HOUSTON CRUISE up to GEORGETOWN June 26th

Sounds like some of you guys will be hitting every gas station along the way!

I'm averaging between 16 - 18 mpg city with mine depending on how heavy the right foot is...

Re: HOUSTON CRUISE up to GEORGETOWN June 26th

The final number of gas station stops is something that will have to be nailed down once we all show up to the parking lot. But we certaintly dont want to set someone up for failure by having them run out of gas on the side of the road. I am hoping that we only need to stop for gas 2 or 3 times that day, but we will see. A day before we go, I am going to sit down on google earth, again, and once more make the virtual drive, and note any gas stations at the aforementioned cities.

Re: HOUSTON CRUISE up to GEORGETOWN June 26th

Just my 2 cents, from being in a "failed" convoy myself.

1 gas can carried by whoever is bringing up the rear of the convoy, is not a bad idea. By being in te rear, he'll see anyone who runs out of gas on the highway.

I also suggest exchanging cell phone #s and/or carrying 2-way radios.

Re: HOUSTON CRUISE up to GEORGETOWN June 26th

man you guys are making this seem way harder than it is, it's like 200 miles at most, have a FULL tank when you get to the meeting spot in the morning, we'll stop 1/2 way, and we should be good. if someone gets <12 mpg just schedule two stops before we leave.

Looks like I'm out.

My car was not running well last weekend and I have not had a moment to work on it.

It looks like I'll have to spend Saturday trying to sort it out.

I hope you guys all have fun...I be wishing I was there.

There will definitly be an exchange of phone numbers, and I really dont see gas stops to be a problem. Im sorry to hear about those who are not going to be able to make it. May fortune find you in some other way.

Alright I have brushed up on the route again. I know exactly how to get there. Posting this so late means almost no one is going to read it before the show but, anyway.... I gotta sleep fast, see you there.

Re: HOUSTON CRUISE up to GEORGETOWN June 26th

No need to apologise for that man. It was a fun trip, and we left an hour early because we suspected possible setbacks. I'll tell you something else man, God must really love you, because that car could not have malfunctioned in a better spot, so the downtime was minimised. I had a great time. We definitly need to set up more cruises. I like having opportunity to drive like a maniac, and I got a big smile on my face when I gased it going into that sharp curve and then everyone behind me did the same thing lol.
