new member dumb question.

i just got a 85 z28 super clean outside,no dents or anything, interior needs some help ,but I wanted something I could fix up.My question is .the guy i got it from said that the 305 was removed and a 350 put in.
Im a pretty good mechanic, but I mostly work on european cars.i need to know how to visually tell a 350 from a 305.I cant find any numbers

any info will be appreciated

Josh

Also I am in east Texas,so if anyone needs anything let me know

Re: new member dumb question.

Short of running the casting #s or pulling a head a& measuring, you can tell the difference, externally, between a 265 & a 400, or anything in between.

Re: new member dumb question.

The Casting numbers should be behind the drives side valve cover on the back of the block. Its pretty hard to see considering its really close to the firewall and at and odd angle. Get those numbers and post them here and I will tell you what you have.

Re: new member dumb question.

Crawl under the car and look at the block between the head and the oil pan on the driver side. My 305 has 305 stamped right on the block.

Re: new member dumb question.

If it is a 1 piece rear seal it will say 5.0 or 5.7 on the back of the bloc on the driver side, that would be a 86+ block, but if the dip stick is on the driver side it will be a older block for sure, let us know.

PS, does it sound like this???

Re: new member dumb question.

whooo hooo.man what a small world we live in.The title of my camaro originated in Quinlan Texas, where i live, but I bought it in hurst texas .The last owner lived in Dallas texas.I have absolutely zero information about my car.well i was driving in wal-mart parking lot ,and I go past two guys standing by their cars.they were staring hard at my car,i just thought they liked it.When my wife and I got out I see them walking toward us,then when were going in the store i looked back to see one of them taking pictures of it with his phone. Then when we were in the store ,he comes up to me and asks me where I got that car.Turns out His father bought him that car for his 18th b-day.they put a 350 from a 94 chevy truck in it .I got his number ,and talked to his dad,and I now know everything thats been done to it .I am so stoked .I had know idea where to start with this thing ,now I have a gameplan
