IS THIS A GOOD DEAL?

I have come across a 87 IROC-Z28. It has T-Tops, and looks to be in good condition. He states that it has a 305 TPI he put in from a 92 chevy pick-up. It looks stock to be honest. He said that it was rebuilt 800 miles ago and he drove it daily. He then said that they replaced the distributor, and sometime in the process the car no longer starts. It has been stting for maybe a year, and when he went to start it up it turned over but never cranked. The interior looks worn but the t-tops dont look to have leaked. also every option ever offered seemed to be in this car. he didnt have the car for sell, but isnt torn to sell it. I need to know what general price area to offer. He mentioned $4,500 but that is a big NO. Im thinking sometime round $2,000 since it doesnt run. He wont work on the car(he is old) and says he'll take it to a dealership to have fixed for around $300. Im looking for a daily i can drive ASAP. Does this sound promising? THANK YOU FOR THE HELP!!!

Re: IS THIS A GOOD DEAL?

i would say that somewhere in the 2500 to 3000 range. by the way there was not a tpi system in the trucks, just tbi. no and i repeat no way i would go over 3000 if i even went that high.

do the ven numbers match, if they do then i probably would offer 3000

Re: IS THIS A GOOD DEAL?

So what should i look@ on the car to make sure it is a decent investment? i felt the bottom of the doors and they were completely smooth, even though the door needed rehanging. i know to check the VIN on the dash, but compare it to what exactly? what can i look @ on the motor to find out what it is? The only thirdgen i ever had was when i was a teeneager so i just bought it and didnt check anything, so ANY help would be great.

Re: IS THIS A GOOD DEAL?

Id go 1000$ tops if i really liked it. It doesnt run and there could be more wrong with it than you want. You can get a 6 speed LT1 with a real motor for 4500$ so tell him that.

Re: IS THIS A GOOD DEAL?

Yeah, these cars are too common to pay more than $1500 for one that doesnt run, and that one would have to have a flawless body for me to buy it for even $1500. Look in autotrader and check out the classifieds here. Also check craigslist. A nice daily drive shouldnt cost you more than $4000 and you could probably get one as low as $2500 if you really look. These cars are worth much.

Re: IS THIS A GOOD DEAL?

In short, no. I am very suspicious since he says its a TPI from truck that never had TPI. If the body and interior were really great, I consider $1000, but even then you might have to put a lot of money into the motor, and who knows about the tranny. Hell Id consider selling my car for $4500 and it runs in the high 12s 1/4mile. Wouldn't be to practical for a daily drive with 3.73 gears, TH350, drag radials and no air conditioner though.
