Get-R-Done!!!

Finally after large amounts of time and money the beast is back alive and I drove her for the first time in 2 1/2 years on friday. I drove her about 10 blocks down the street to the gas station to fill her up. She made it there and back with no problems other than what seems to be an oil leak on my valve cover and a bad tune on the carb. I will do some more fine tuning and and cleanup and she should be ready for the meet. WOOOT!!

Side Note: I will never ever install a transmission from the bottom of the car ever again. It was a royal pain in my ****. I could not lift it myself from my back so I got creative. I put a jack on the front side of the tranny and starting jacking. Then another jack on the backside. Got it in the air and then I put one in the middle. Before I knew it I had 4 jacks under this thing and I was jacking them one at a time to even the tranny out and get it in the air. It took me three hours but I got the dang thing in there. Thats how I roll!!! Heres a pic:

Re: Get-R-Done!!!

SPOKE TO SOON!!!

I took her out for a drive to work out the kinks and she started overheating. So I pulled over, turned the car off and check everything out. Poured some water in the radiator just to see if she was a little low and when I turn the key all my power goes away. This has happened to me before so I was a little frustrated, but I thought I had the fix. So I check to fuses, and low and behold one is blown. I start the car again and get here driving down the street. I lose power again. Now I am getting frustrated. So I check the fuses and another is blown. I change it and start the car, get down the road and yet again she dies. So I called a friend and had them tow me home. Sounds like I have a major short somewhere. So I will get to working on it tomorrow when I have time. I should have all day Wed. to look at it, and half the day Friday. So I should be able to it back where it should be.

Re: Get-R-Done!!!

Damn dude that sucks about the short. I'll never do a trans on the floor again, it blows. I just rent lift time from the shop i worked at in highschool. It takes me about 15 min to get it out, and 15 to get it back in! Gotta love a lift and a trans jack!

Re: Get-R-Done!!!

Mine has something to do with the ignition switch as well. What was yours doing? That might help me get started in my diagnosis.

Re: Get-R-Done!!!

Well, ill give you a shake down:

1) My voltage has acted funny for the longest

2) My fans would nt come on and windows would not roll down

3) My heater/ac would not come on

My switch was worn badly, i took it apart and looked at it once removed, it had grooves in the copper for the power transfer from switch position.

My fans are on a 30 amp fuse, make sure yours is too. Also, make sure all your power to your fan and any other electrical parts is not drawing too much power to blow your fuses. Mine was popping fuses due to the AC blower motor not working, it was just drawing too much current and making the 30 am fuse blow. You might have a problem like that somewhere. Hope you dont have some bad ground you cannot find.

Good luck man!

Re: Get-R-Done!!!

Yeah I have a 40 amp fuse wired to my fan, and most my accessories. I created a harness that is completely seperate from the rest of my electrical componenants that is fused and and hooked to my switches on my shifter console. They are all working right now, so I know it has something to do with my engine harness. I am going to to try a few things and if they dont work I am going to completely pull the harness and check every wire.

Re: Get-R-Done!!!

Well, I think I found the first problem. My fan cam unplugged and the wire hit the sway bar killing the fuse connected to it. So I hooked all that up and they are fine now. Then I check my fuse block to see why I dont have power inside the car and I found a few blown fuses. I fixed them and the lights came back on, but still when I turn the key to the on position I get no response. Also something that scared me is that I pulled my brake fuse and it was completely melted, but still in tact. I replaced it but my brake lights are still out so I think something is damaged there. I have a really bad short some where and I just cant find it. I am going to pull the engine harness on Wed and check every piece of wire to make sure nothing is shorting it.

Re: Get-R-Done!!!

Well I think I fixed the problem. I pulled my harness entirely from the car tonight and I found a ground wire that was torn out of its connecter. So I cleaned up the harness and little hear and there, re-spliced wires that were looking a little worn and after re-installed the harness I turned the key and everything was back online. It is 1:00 am now so I am calling it a night. Tomorrow I will drive it again to make sure everything is ok and then on to fixing my cooling problem.

Re: Get-R-Done!!!

The car fired right up today and I let it idle for a while before I drove it down the street. It started to drizzle a bit and I dont have a hood so I had to put it back in the garage. I still dont know about the overheating problem but the wring prob seems fixed. My gauges arent working all of the sudden (aftermarket and seperat wiring from engine harness) so maybe the car isnt overheating at all and I just had a jacked up temp guage. I guess problems with occure when you let a car sit for 2+ years.

Re: Get-R-Done!!!

I am running a mechanical temp gauge. I had to convert to a electrical oil pressure unit due to the fact that no matter what i did i couldnt get the mech oil pressure unit to quit leaking, now i have a bright blue lit oil pressure gauge at night, it doesnt look right since everything else is amber or regular light bulb lit.

Re: Get-R-Done!!!

Yeah my temp guage is mechanical also, but I still think it might be off. Just the way it was acting didnt make any sense. I flew from 210 to 240 in like 3 seconds then when I slowed down it dropped back to 210 in a heartbeat. I am starting to wonder if maybe the line for the sender is bent somewhere or something. Oh well, I will get the final tweaking done friday afternoon.
