seeking transmission guidance

Hey guys, Got a few questions I'm hoping you guys can offer some advice and some input on. This morning my transmission decided to take a **** on me. My question is this. What tranny can I throw in with a shift kit and have reliable fun with? TKO 600(yes i know its a 5spd), TH350, or another 700R4. I'm still learning about f-bodys, and having come over from the import side of things, I have some knowledge of cars in general. But any advice, criticism or help will be appreciated.

Re: Seeking transmission guidance
Well, I just did a little search for pricing on a TH350, and ran across some info, stating TH350's are reliable up to 275HP, And I'm going to be around the 350hp mark within the next few months. So a TH350 is outta the question. Any other suggestion's?

Call ARD and talk to Owen--he is one of the most knowledgable--best builders in the Hou area and he is VERY INEXPENSIVE, and Ard is about the only "thirdgen friendly" performance shop in the Hou area!

From I-10 and highway 6, go north past Keith Harrow till you reach Addicks Satsuma. Take a right turn and go about 100 yards down, and you will see the sign and it is located on the left in a business park.

Re: seeking transmission guidance

A stock TH350 maybe, but built can go over 500HP easily, and it is the cheapest trans to build. For what you can boy a TKO 5 speed you can get a T56 6 speed with everything you need used, they are rated at 400-450 HP depending on the model. A TH400 is heavier than the TH350, but can be built to handle ungodly amounts of power. A 700R4 can be built to handle 450HP all day, but it will not be as cheap as the TH350 and TH400.

Hope this sheds some light

Re: seeking transmission guidance

if you want to row through the gears yourself, get a T-56.

Re: seeking transmission guidance

Also in my opinion, a manual is more fun and conservative on the street, but you cannot beat the consistancy of a built auto at the track.

Re: seeking transmission guidance

to decide between the TH350 and the 700R4 if you go the auto route, remember, the TH350 has no overdrive but is great for the track, stronger, more reliable and cheaper. But on the other hand if you plan on doing more freeway driving than just going to meets or the track then you would be better off with the 700R4 with the overdrive. I run about 3300rpm on the freeway at bout 65mph with a TH350 and 3.73 gears.

Re: seeking transmission guidance

Thanks for the info guys. I do drive on I-45 alot so I'm going to need a OD. I would love to just find another 700R4 and throw a shift kit on it, with some gears in the back. Most of you prob. read Camaro Performer, Well in the 07 may issue, they did a budget 305 build up. Thats what I'm planning on doing. Just so I can have alittle fun with out having to swap motors. I have been to ARD,about a year ago. To one of their dyno days, Me and my buddy Aaron went, with both of our Turbo'd Nissan 240SX's, We both dyno'd about 220-230 on about the same amount of boost. But the people up their are real nice, and very friendly, And now that I've got a 3rd gen, thats where I'm going to go to get any modifications done that I dont do myself.

Re: seeking transmission guidance

A plus to the 700r4 is the 1st gear ratio is 2.97:1, the Th350 is 2.52:1, the 700r will get you outta the hole quicker, but the TH350 will not drop RPM as m uch on the 1-2 shift, a plus for some, but if you dont make enough power i guess worrieing about RPM drop would be an issue.

Re: seeking transmission guidance

I like the 700R4 in my 89 IROC. It is set up as manual shift only--so it's like driving a manual but without a clutch, + I have the B+M ratchet shifter on it--it's loads of fun to drive. I had Owen rebuild it a couple years ago, and it takes everything I throw at it. The very low 1st gear is way cool and the overdrive makes it where I am turning less than 3000 at 72/73 mph, with 4:10 gears

Re: seeking transmission guidance

Wise move to go back to ARD (jay (xtremeirocz), is Owen's...
well nobody really knows). But they are the best I've ever
seen. And everytime I ask about, "Well can you do ???",
the answer is "Sure..." & then in subsequent query &
conversation, you get the warm fuzzy, they probably can.

Re: seeking transmission guidance

dont go with th350, at first they're kinda cool but if its your daily ride then you will start to hate it within a few months. Trust me i speak from experience. i miss my overdrive.
