No Spring Fling?

I just realized we are in the middle of Spring and I haven't heard anything about a Spring meet. Anybody up for it before it gets too hot?

Re: No Spring Fling?

After the last fiasco--2006 Fall Brawl-- i have retired from organizing events such as these. If somebody want to put one together and do all the stuff necessary, then by all means go for it, but it won't be me! As moderator, I will be glad to put a "sticky" on necessary threads.

I may even attend, then again maybe not--I still have a bad taste in my mouth from last time!

Re: No Spring Fling?

Are you referring to the last meet we had at Lonestar Raceway? What was so bad about it? There was a low turnout sure, but you cant control that, people have other things to do sometimes. I had a good time, we had round robin bracket racing, I broke into the 12s, we saw some new nice cars (the convertible Camaro), ate some hamburgers and deviled eggs, saw Owen make a cool pass, gave out the appearance awards, Max was even there for the first time at a regular meet.

If organizing it means getting the ball rolling on selecting a date and place, then I will start that.

possible dates:
May 12th
May 19th

Places with my opinions
Bear Creek Park - good choice, relatively central location, nice setting, cooking

Lonestar - far for some, had the last meet there, uncrowded, cooking

HRP - far for some, always crowded, no cooking, nice track

HMP - crowded, no place to park together, no cooking

I vote for May 12th at Bear Creek Park

As I recall the plan this last time was to only give award plaques for appearance. these were given out, thanks to Kevin who had them made, and the other guy who gracioulsly went out of his way to pick them up on the day of the meet.

Besides when you average all your ETs with all that slowing down during bracket racing, you probably ran an average of about 14 seconds

Re: No Spring Fling?

eh...I'll be back in Houston after May 22nd... Might take me a week to get the car reinsured as well. Whenever I'm back in town I can help organize any future gathering. Last one I organized was the 2003 Houston Thirdgen Gathering ( I think... )

Re: No Spring Fling?

I'll swing by anything that gets put together when possible.

IF its anything like parks, etc, have them start in the afternoon and it might help people who work earlier in the day attend, its the boat im in now.

Zap, dont worry over no shows when something gets put together. I've always had the same problem with track rentals on the chicago board. Couple cost me a good chunk out of my pocket(didnt care i had it then) but the times we had were still so worth it. Anything involving people and committing is 50 people commiting and 1/4 of them actually showing :-) lol

for those of us that weren't at the Fall Brawl, what was the "fiasco" that happened Craig?

I'd be down for helping put one together. I'll be home end of next week so I will actually be able to attend.

MY SLOWEST PASS PEDALING IT ON MOTOR WAS A 13.00, IF THE PLAN WAS TO ONLY GIVE OUT APPERANCE AWARDS THEN WHY DID WE GIVE A TROPHY FOR THE BRACKET WINNER. THERE WAS A AWARD FOR FASTEST E.T. , BUT SOMEONE DROPPED THE BALL

If U are coming from out of town, Please go to the LMP web site for more info such as directions, accomidations, ETC!

WHEN: Saturday -- 11/18/06 -- From the time Sealy opens (11/12am) til they kick us out! (dark?-- we/they are not sure of the hours of operation for 11/18/06 at this moment)

WHO: All thirdgenners from all corners of the Universe!
EVERYBODY IS WELCOME!!!

WHY: Cause it's the COOL THIRDGEN thing to do!

Traditionally, the last few years, we have had our big meets in a park, burn some dogs, vote and award appearance awards, have a mass cruise to either a local Sat night car show, or to one of the local drag strips.

This year, by popular vote, we have decided to have the entire meet at LMP/Sealy. At the time I am posting this thread, LMP is not 100% sure of the hours of operation, but they are guessing they will be on winter hours of opening around 11 or 12 in the morning and going until dark--maybe later. Our plans are basically, the meet will start when they open and go til they close, or kick us out, whichever comes first.

It's 10.00 admission per person, and 10.00 for a tech card to run on the strip. If this changes I will post it here!

We will still have our world famous BBQ--"BURNING OF THE DOGS" -- a pot luck meal where everybody brings a little something like hot dogs or burgers + buns--chips --drinks-- tater salad --deviled eggs --dessert like cookies or whatever.

Also, they do have a concesion stand there at the track with typical track food/menu.

After the BBQ, we will all vote using a preprinted ballot form, and give out the appearance awards. Winners will be determined by votes cast by all who attend!

AWARDS WILL BE PRESENTED FOR THE FOLLOWING CLASSES!
(Thirdgens only!)
Best Paint--overall exterior appearance
Best Interior
Best/Cleanest Engine engine and compartment
Best Tires/Wheels
Best Sounding Exhaust at Idle
Best/Long Distance Award
Best Overall-- All categories combined

Awards will be what are commonly refered to as "dash plaques" They are an engraved, credit card size plaque, that U can display in your car, on your tool box, wherever!

As well, through out the day we will have:
Test-n-tune runs!
Grudge matches!

We will also continue with our:

"HOUSTON'S FASTEST STREET DRIVEN THIRDGEN!"

This is a double elimination tournament in several different time classes! (if there is enough to do this). There will be plaques/awards given for the following time brackets:

11 sec
12 sec
13 sec
14 sec
15 sec
Houston's Fastest Thrdgen--Fastest overall ET of the day
Quickest reaction time-- from all the runs in the elimination ladder (does not include TNT runs!!!)

The elimination ladder will be after the BBQ/Awards are over--later in the afternoon. Hopefully by then will have had a chance to make a couple runs to see what kinda times U are running. We will pair off 12 sec cars with other 12 sec cars--13 sec cars with other 13 sec cars --ETC. It will be a double elimination ladder -- which means U have to lose twice, before U are officially eliminated from the inner club event.

Please click the link below and read:
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/so...st-street.html

Don't miss it--make plans now or U will be......WELL ---------------------> <------------------------

WATCH THIS POST FOR UPDATED INFO !!!

ANY QUESTIONS???

While there were several things that contributted to the "fiasco" (a couple of which I do not care to discuss in public), the biggest was the Sealy drag strip announcing on their calender, they were closed on the day we had scheduled the BBQ/ meet, even after I had traded several emails with the owner, about having our event out there. He was willing to work with us, and open the track, as long as it was not a money losing situation for him. After polling the people on the thirdgen about how many would be going (which the number was in the high teens, possibly low twenties--as well as the ARD guys bringing out 7 or 8 cars along with tow/support vehicles), only 6 or 7 showed, plus most of the ARD crew.

The crew at the strip were all ready to run a special dial your own time bracket show for us--even billed it on the web site--along with being open for TNT runs for the general public. When only 5 or 6--I don't remember exactly at the moment--participated in the bracket race...well do I need to continue?

Here--click on the link below, and read the comments for yourself, including comments by some who have apparently forgotten how it all went down!

I had fun even though my flexplate broke at the ticket booth. I dont try to worry to much about it anymore, as most of the people on here work on weekends so unless we plan something months in advance it usually will have low turnouts.

all I know is the poor support for the last fall brawl burned alot of peoples bottoms to the point. I think it is sad that we cant get this right and have a event we can be proud of

Re: No Spring Fling?

Damn Craig, I had no idea. When I moved down here I to Florida I stopped checking in on the board as much since I don't have my car with me. Unfortunately it sounds like par for the course though. I think we've really only had one meet that we had a lot of people show up to, that being one of the first ones at Bear Creek where we had like 30 something cars. would be awesome to see that again, but I've never gotten my hopes up again.

I can say for sure though that if we have another Spring Fling this year, I'm in. I'm heading home for the summer next week and should be starting work on the car within a couple of weeks. Got some big plans this year

The awards plaques were picked up at Kevins work on the day of the meet by Wheelspin. Any plaques that were made were all picked up that day and distributed. Sorry if some got left out.

Haven't been on the board in quite a while, because the same few people post, the same few people show up, people volunteer, and don't follow thru.(You know who you are) I don't blame Craig one bit for being thoroughly disgusted. I think we've had this discussion before, and NOTHING has changed since. The bottom line is this club DOESN'T MATTER to most of the people who say they are members, yet always have an excuse NOT to be there. SH*T people, THIS THING IS FREE. One of the biggest thrills I've had in this club (other than BEATING Jay) was seeing 32 third-gens at bear Creek Park. Unfortunately, Tristen, you're right. It won't happen again. But I'll continue to be there.

Re: No Spring Fling?

Barry makes an important point, "THIS THING IS FREE", and besides, its supposed to be FUN! not involve a lot of weeping and gnashing of teeth.

I like to see a big turnout just as much as anybody else, but honestly, people sometimes have other things to do that come up that are more important than going to the meet, that's just the way it is. It was a bit embarrassing at Sealy since they opened the track specifically for us. It would be better in the future to not make those types of arrangements again, where someone does something special for us based on an estimate of a certain number of cars showing up.

If award plaques are going to be important then we shouldn't rely on a guy who happens to have a business that makes them, to donate them for FREE. You can't really complain if he doesn't make all the ones we wanted. If we pay for them then we can raise hell with the business if they don't come through.

I understand the disappointment at the last turnout, but I think we should move on and leave the bitterness behind and plan a new event. Ive been to every event that I could make when I wasn't out of the country on business and have enjoyed every one of them, no matter how many people showed up.

I say let's get back to the original topic of this thread and decide on a place and a date for the Spring Fling and have some freakin fun!

Re: No Spring Fling?

It may not amount to much, but severall people say would attend a meet. Including me!

I know I have missed a couple in the past, but always becuase I was out of town for work.

Anyway, I think we should try again for SOME kind of meet. I think that a regular event that is always in the same place at the same time at regular intervals would have better attendance. Everyone would know when and where to go and make it if they could.

I may be starting to sound like a broken record...but I think Saturday nights at Otto's is a good choice.

already had it...................you lost. And by the way, your dial-in was the same as mine, which made it a heads-up race.
