Help with choosing stall and gears

I have an 87 Trans Am with a 96 Vortec 350. It has an Edelbrock Performer Intake, Jet Stage 2 Quadrajet Carb, Hedman longtubes. Comp XR270HR (218/224 @50, .495/.502 lift, 110 LSA). This is not a daily driver, just a weekend toy more or less. Im looking for suggestions on a good stall speed and rear end ratio. All help appreciated.

Re: Help with choosing stall and gears

Converter stall speed around 2600 for that camshaft for what you want to do with it.

Gearing depends a lot on tire size etc. If geared properly, you will cross the finish line at or just after your shift point in high gear, not OD. Since that cam isn't for a high reving engine and you're using a 700R4, 3.73 gears will probably be fine.

Re: Help with choosing stall and gears

the s10 standard stall converter in my 700r4 upgrade was great to tootle around with, and turned the car into an absolute burnout machine.

that was with 2.73 gears.

I was big on high speed touring and liked running at the front of the pack between tracks street racing so I liked that ratio, and the car would cruise all day at 125-135 getting decent mileage.

I never had it to 150 but it would get near there nicely with revs to spare. How fast CAN you go in one of these? it felt ok at that speed but i was scared to push it. On the highway it was super fun, running with nsx es s2000's turboed nissans and M3's. At the track though, it'd only run with mildly swapped hondas and stockish wrxes.

It ran a flat 15 though in the quarter and on hilly back roads, it really liked secong gear.

The motor might have been less torquey than yours, it was a mild towing grind, roller cam in a 2 bolt 355 with 882 heads and just over 10:1 compression. Nothing was there after 5k, it was a truck motor basically.

If you like to drag race and 120 mph is ok for you, 3.42-3.55 is always a fun ratio.
