Summit racing paint???
Has anyone tried the summit racing line of auto paints? They look like they have all the right products and buzz words.....colors look good, prices look great in comparison to my local paint store.....i need to paint my nieghbor's 85 and it would be great to save the dough if the paint is comparable to name brand products? Anybody try it it? thankspat

well i never painted a full car with it. I bought some to paint all my suspension, it turned out very nice. But it was kind of orange peely. Its very good paint tho. just when you paint the car you may want to wetsand it and buff it.

Re: Summit racing paint???
it's kirker paint. pretty good stuff, but not as good a prospray, and not that much cheaper. consider it for solid colors only. no metallics

Keep in mind that cheap reds fade worse than any other color. I would hate to see you wind up with a pink car in a few years

Re: Summit racing paint???
Anything with summit's brand on it is actually made by someone else, and generally speaking they won't put their name and thus reputation on something crappy, also since they aren't the one making all this stuff, its generally made by a company that specializes in that specific product or category. A lot of aftermarket companies make deals like this with other companies, to sell more product, and since their name isn't on it and they aren't selling it to the general public, they can lower the price of it to sell it in mass, its pretty common.
Also you should search for ultimate budget paint job on here in the body section, I plan to paint my car that method, for now at least, I want house of kolor burple, but when you look at all the stuff you need for that color its expensive...and atm I care more about cheap rust protection than the color I really want.

Re: Summit racing paint???
I painted my car hugger orange with summit paint. I used summit brand for the primer, seal, paint and clear. it turned out great. nice budget paint.
as far wondering how much auto shops pay for paint. they dont buy budget paint. I was workin in a friends auto collision repair shop for a few months and saw invoices on the paint. they dont buy premixed colors like we do, they buy just basic colors and mixers to make the various paint colors. a gallon of straight black mixer from PPG is about $400

Re: Summit racing paint???
well the things i've seen so far look good in summit paint.....i guess the question will be ' how long do they stand up to UV? is there a difference? probably.....some chemist in the back room at these paint companies knows the answer....my cars almost NEVER sit out in the sun for longer than a cruise or a car show, so i'm probably ok....i've got 15 year old NAPA paint on my 62 caddy that still looks as good as when i first painted it.....i guess only time will tell as to why some paints are cheaper than others......

Re: Summit racing paint???
couple things to keep in mind when deciding if a paint is a good bargain or not..
how well does it cover? If you have to spray thick (and you can't with metallics) or cover something several times, to get the coverage that a better paint will get in two coats, then it's no longer a bargain. I can't testify about the coverage of Kirker/summit, but I can say that dupont nason has TERRIBLE coverage
This next point is important... what is the mix ratio? Prospray is mixed at 1:1 meaning two quarts will give you a gallon of sprayable paint, which is enough to do most cars in base coat.
Kirker Mixes at 4:1, which means when you buy a gallon of paint, you only wind up with 1.25 gallons pf sprayable paint. Still enough to do a job, but maybe not if the coverage isn't as good as prospray.
Also, with prospray, you get the factory formulas, not a premix that you hope is close to your door jams and anything you decide not to spray. Not the biggest deal if you are doing a total tear down and respray, but how many of us paint every square inch of our cars?
your picture does look really great, and If color matching wasn't that important to me, I would consider kirker. You might also check the website smartshoppersinc for the best price and selection of kirker paint
by the way, my prospray paint was about $65 a quart. not bad at all for what is considered a paint equal to the best PPG and Dupont offer. I decided to go with that and SPI universal clear, the two have the reputation for being the best base and clear somebody can consider

Re: Summit racing paint???
The kirker sprays great. that pic is two coats of basecoat and two coats of clear. I got my paint from smartshoppersinc $103 for the gallon of ultra blue pearl and $26 for the activator, Its the black diamond base/clear system. Thanks for saying it looks great since its my first time spraying a car. I was worried spraying a pearl paint for the first time but the base went on so easy and covered great I cant praise it enough for the ease of use.
I completely agree that if you're color matching an original paint that prospray would be the way to go. But for someone looking at Summit paint to change colors it might be worth it to look into Kirker.

Re: Summit racing paint???
i contacted prospray and they got me in touch with a dealer a few miles from my house. Another option is to contact Chad S. on the SPI used forum. He can mix it and get it to you

Re: Summit racing paint???
I was quoted a price for Nason base and clear with an after tax price of $278.61. Nason isn't the best, but I'd buy it over a "no-name" brand online.
Edit: Click if you're not familiar with Nason.
