700R4 3/4 Clutch Pack Clearance
I just put in my 3/4 clutch pack tonight and measured my clearance ...it's a lot closer than the stock .030"-.090" (depending on the year). I'm using a TCI Master Racing overhaul kit with Alto clutches and I'm getting about 0.010" as the largest clearance (a little less at certain points around the plate). I've heard that TransGo recommends as little as 0.015" clearance (for a faster apply), but I'm a little concerned about my tight clearance. Should I get a thinner plate to give me more clearance or will the tight clearance be okay? What are the pros and cons of the tighter clearance?

.010-.015 per clutch plate is a rule of thumb. On a full thickness 3-4 6 disc pack, I like .060-070. On the 8 disk Alto kits, I like .030-.040

i have my 3-4 clear. at .045, b&m has the spec. at .039 to .098 which is way to big of a gap at least i think, the closer to min. you can get is good if you are for performance and it has a shift kit or something like that in it.for what clutches and steels i had, that was the smallest i could get. applies quicker and less slippage equals

The transmission is "built" - shift kit, servo, stiffer springs, hardened sunshell, wide band, etc - but I really don't know the downside to running a really tight clearance on the 3-4 clutch pack ...it's got me concerned. If it's too tight could it cause problems when it's not applied?

if the clearance is to tight, it can burn it up(and probably will) even though it is not applied. i run the raybestos "Zpac" and have about .040 to .045 clearance. .015 is way to tight in my opinion.

...just mixed and matched some steels and got ~0.045" on the 3-4 pack and ~0.015" on the forward pack. Thanks everyone.
