i'm about to light off my new engine and trans today, but when i put the converter in, my "builder" said to put about a 1/2 qt of fluid in it when i put it on. well, i attempted to do that, as it didn't appear to want to take a 1/2 qt. so, would that be normal? i know the entire system holds about 10 qts, and i've put about 5.5 qts in already. what i need to know is how much more fluid should i add to avoid overfilling it for the initial run? i really can't attest to how much is in the converter, so... supposedly it was new. i was thinking about 2-3 more qts... don't wanna burn anything up, though, cuz obviously there needs to be enough fluid to get in to all the passages, etc. thanks.

if you put some in the convertor, then put the trans to the engine, got everthing connected, and filled it up to the top mark on the dipstick, you will be fine for initial startup. As soon as you get it running, pull the stick and check, most likely it will have gone down, so simply add more till its a little lower than the top mark - no sense in overfilling it before it gets hot. Wait till the engine gets hot, go through the gears and check it. Just make sure it stays on the stick and youll be ok.

Sorry to misdirect this thread but If I dropped the pan to change the filter and a solenoid...about how much fluid would have been lost, anyone know?

well i went thru about 11 qts between the trans and p/s pump... never got to run the engine for an extended period of time since i almost burnt some wires and had leaks at the trans line unions... not bad, but some ran out. gotta back up and regroup a little and go back at it. played hell getting the engine to start anyways, but finally did and got enough fluid in the trans to fill 'er good and go thru the gears...

My 700R4 in my truck took 14 quarts to top it off. I have a deep pan and a big cooler too though. Stock they should be right around 11.

Dana at Pro-Built gave me this break-in procedure. He said dump 1 quart in the converter. Then put 5 quarts in the pan. Start up the engine and immediately add another 4 quarts. Let it run for a moment and check the fluid. Drive for about 10 minutes using only manual shifts. Then stop and recheck the level. Add as necessary.
