Smog pump delete pictures please ( serpentine belt)
I want to remove the smog stuff from my 88 camaro, and I would like to see a picture of the belt routing without the smog pump.
The tech article about it, got me confused. Can someone post a pic or a diagram please?
This is how the belt is right now.

Thanks for your input guys.
The thing that got me confused on the tech article is that it sais this: And this: For what I see, no new belt routing is necesary, and I will need a shorter belt, not a longer one, rigth?
Do you now the part number of the belt hat I will need?
Thanks a lot

To remedy the situation a different belt routing is neccesary.
You will however need a longer belt, I used Dayco 968K6 belt.
Do you now the part number of the belt hat I will need?
Thanks a lot

The 2 serpentine setups I have put on were both routed a totally different way which is what the tech article is referring to. The way the picture CamaroDriver edited is the end result of the 're-routed' belt from the way shown below.

i can get you the part number. i think it may be somewhere on my home page, i have to look it up though.
it is hard to get. my parts guy had to pull a lot ofstrings to get me mine because it is technically an illegal part. he had to get it out of canada. that was a couple years back though, so maybe they are easier to come by now.
ill get that part number for you as soon as i can...

I did a search here and found the part #, sorry I don't have it on-hand. I called GM Parts Direct and they stocked it. Also the dealership could order it $40-60. Parts Direct was cheaper

I am also interested.
So, do you need a shorter belt, or a longer one?? No one clarified. And which setup is correct?? Looks to me like the pic CamaroDriver posted will work.

I used the belt they recommend in that tech article, although I went to AutoZone, Car Quest, and NAPA, and the closest they had was 97".
It's a bit long (obviously ) and comes REAL close to touching the water pump pulley. If you're stuck in that same situation, maybe get another one shorter, as well as the one they describe in the tech article. Try each and see which works better.
BTW, that second pic in the tech article is not one to follow UNLESS you remove your power steering pump. Look closer and you'll see what I mean.

One, that one that camarodriver was refering to, like this:
And the second one, (like the one in my car) like this:
I think that what I need to do is this:
And as you can see I will need a shorter belt, but if the stock routing of your belt is like the picture on the first link, you will need a longer belt as the article says.
Somebody correct me right away if I'm wrong, and thanks to all for your responses

In your situation all you need is the 96.8" belt like the tech article mentions, and it should look like the second diagram CamaroDriver posted.
FWIW, GM must have changed the belt routing in 89 because my belt routing diagram (with smog pump) looks like the one Deadbird posted. I have since deleted the smog pump and run a 96.8 belt routed according to the tech article....works perfect.

ressurecting this post because I needed it, and hopefully you guys do too...
Anyway, I am confused as to why people route the belt differently (in the tech article) instead of getting a shorter belt like this... Why not just get a shorter belt!?

Why don't you just gutt your pump.
It will still pass for functional but have close to no resistance.
and you can keep your belt.
I would try this before replacing the belt.
Removing the blades may be difficult but it is possible to do.

Here is a pic of my gutted air pump right after drilling apart the fins; sinse then I have sprayed out the bearings and regreased them. The pump is currently operating in my vehicle smoother than it was before.
Wish i could post a larger picture the compression butchered it.

Well as far as the belts, dayco's suck, and don't last as long as gates, and the prices are so similar its not worth buying the dayco, opt for a Gates, from Carquest.
Screw buying the pulley to replace the smog pump or machining it, thats a bunch of work, and wasted money. Just remove the pump and get the different belt and reroute it, and if you have a non functional a/c, buy the delete pulley, myne was 75$ for a new one from GM.

GUT IT!
Mine was making an awful noise. Being the cheap SOB I am, I looked at my options.
1) Buy a new one, $75.00 plus $15 core charge-- Nah.
2) Do the Belt routing, new belt $50-- Nah.
3) Pulley Delete, $50-- Nah.
4) Gut it, free-- OH YEAH!!
It took about 5 minutes to get it off the car, 30 minutes to pull it apart, get the guts out, grease it, reassemble. It is cheaper and it also retains the look of the smog pump for emissions checkers.

new belts aren't 50$, more like 25-30, and you don't need the delete pulley, delete pulley is for the a/c removal.

oh cool, I was unaware, and haven't seen or heard of one until now. I knew about the a/c one being available on trucks, but not the smog pump one. Eh, what are you going to do, lol.

Re: Smog pump delete pictures please ( serpentine belt)
Deadbird- I have a 1986 Camaro Z28 Originally had a 305. I put in a 350. I have overheat problems. I have replaced everything. Now I am wondering if I don't have the water pump going the wrong way. I have the belt going over the alternator (it is on the left sid looking at the engine) over the water pump then around the crank. In otherwords eveything is running clockwise. I have no smog, no A/C. I have Power steering pump with a belt of its own over the crak. The belt over the WP is a flat about 2"wide V belt. Any help?

Re: Smog pump delete pictures please ( serpentine belt)
OK I think I have figured out my problem. Running the water pump clockwise It built pressure in the radiator and also coolant would flow out of the filler neck. So I took the thermostat out and now the coolant runs freely. Indicating to me that the Water Pumpo should run counterclockwise to the crankshaft. So I need to figure out where to put a tension and possible idel pully and run a serpentine belt. Any ideas or diagrams appreciated.

Re: Smog pump delete pictures please ( serpentine belt)
I have a '89 Formula 305 TBI. I am deleting the Smog (AIR) pump now. It looks like I DO NOT need to re-route and DO NOT need a longer belt. I don't need a delete pulley and I'm not gutting the Smog pump. All I should need is a SHORTER BELT. Can someone who has done a Smog delete and used a SHORTER belt please give me the Company who makes it and product number? I want to walk over to O-Reilly's and grab it.
All complete it will look like the photo below but no one has stated who makes the shorter belt or a product #. This would be a MASSIVE help right now. Thanks.

tunedperformanc - isn't that the Dayco 968K6 the LONGER BELT for re-routing?
I need the SHORTER BELT just to skip the Smog pump.

I dont spin mine past 6000 RPM, but I've never had an issue with it throwing or wearing belts, so Id recommend just following the tech article. I think the recommended belt in the article was too long, so I had to go back and get a little shorter.

I just pulled all the emissions out.I need to put the belt on today. Also what did you guys use to plug the 8 holes in the engine? Is there a specific kit? Or just put bolts in those holes?
