Re: My Turbo Dreams Have Come True
UPDATE: Got my block back from the machine shop, but needless to say it was never touched. I was lied too twice about it being on the jig and once they said "the machinist is doing it as we speak" while we were on the phone last Friday. I went down to the shop this past Tuesday to get the real story and then they said it will not get done this week again because he said "the machinist needs to finish some emergency jobs first. Of course, I left highly upset wanting to just lay hands on some folks in a bad way. I went home and got my truck, pulled it around to the back of the shop where you pick up/drop off, walked right in, and saw my block sitting in the same spot where I left it 3 weeks ago not even touched. At that time, I just rolled my block out the back door and put it in the truck and never looked back.
Well I decided to just return the Howard caps and run the block as is. It really didn't make any sense to install those billet caps on that GM block anyway because of my budget. Total cost would have been almost $1400 with the cost of the block, billet caps, and line boring on a stock block when a SHP block was $350 more. I'm glad they never touched it!!!
This is what I've gotten done so far as of last night. Heads are going on tonight. Installed crank: clearance is right at .002 on all the mains except number 5. It was at .0018. The rods clearance is right on the money too. Finally finished filing the rings. Top gap .021, Second gap .023. And degree the cam, it was cut straight up at 115 LSA, it's degree with 3* adv.. Cam numbers are Comp Cams custom grind: 231/231 dur, .593/.563 with 1.6 RR at 115 LSA cut straight up. Should makes some good power. CR is lower that I wanted at 8.7:1, but still a budget build with parts I already had and I was not going to buy another set of pistons when I got this for free.

Sucks to hear about your bad luck at the machine shop. Seems to be more common these days. Hopefully the build turns out good and you have good results.

Re: My Turbo Dreams Have Come True
UPDATE: Finished up most of the assembly and dropped the motor/trans in last night, but still need to install the intake. I took some time to polish the turbo and cold side pipping. Prepped the hot side for Techline Turbo X coating that should be hear today; I'm getting tired of wasting money on header rap that dries out and breaks, then the fiberglass gets all over the place. It only cost $128 for a quart shipped to a local repair shop only. So I said I'll try it because it sure beats sending them to Jet Hot. Well here are some pics.

Just finished coating the hot side of the turbo system, I think it turned out pretty good. And the instruction are easy to understand and follow.

Re: My Turbo Dreams Have Come True
Update: The car is finally finished, oil pressure is looking good between 55-60 psi when primed with the drill. All fluids are top off ready for first start and then my fuel pumps decided to take a crap . Meaning, you can hear both pumps running when the key is turned to prime the system but no fuel is coming out. I played with pumps last night for about 2 hrs trying to figure out what's going on. I even pulled the pump assembly submerged both pumps in a bucket of fuel to test them and again nothing, just the pump motors spinning with no fuel coming out.
So I have to wait for new pumps from Racetronix, should be here next week sometime I guess. So close .

Re: My Turbo Dreams Have Come True
Anyway 1st, 2nd, and part 3rd gear is useless from a dig of course on MT drag radials. It even spins the Mickey's from a roll at 65mph on 9lbs of boost. It's still rich with the AFR in the 10.6 to 10.8 range. I'll try to lock down my AFR before the dyno so I can concentrate on timing and valve train when on the rollers. My friend has a DynoJet, so no load bearing here, just good for timing adjustments and to monitor the valve train to ensure it's up to par. So far so good!

Re: My Turbo Dreams Have Come True
Don't let the dynojet dyno fool you, bro.
No matter what you do on the dyno, you will have to re-tune for the track.
If I had not lowered the timing from 15 degrees down to 8 when I hit the track, my pistons would have had windows in them from going lean.

Depends on the dyno.. If its a mustang brand dyno, they seem to get a better "street tune" because of the loading capabilities. That dynojet dont have

Re: My Turbo Dreams Have Come True
You know I'm aware of that fact, the dyno is just a tuning aide not the end all be all. You are having other issues anyway. I'm at 8.9:1 on my compression, and my timing is set at 19* on 9lbs. I just confirmed boost and AFR last night, which is 11.6 at the current boost level with no knock on pump gas, so I have a good baseline. The car feels good and spools very quickly. I had to postpone the dyno Friday because the new re-enforced valve cover gaskets did not get here until after 6pm from FedEx. I may try to hit it up on Tuesday.

Re: My Turbo Dreams Have Come True
No dyno results yet, but I managed to go to the track last weekend for some T-n-T with mixed results because of trash in the fuel regulator kept preventing my 1 to 1 boost reference from happening. Well of course I found and removed a huge piece of rubber that came from the braided lines after I trimmed it, well I guess I didn't clean the line good enough before assembling the AN fuel fitting. All is well again, I did run a 6.87 @ 103.22 mph with a 1.75 60ft on 9lbs. of boost. The car was pushing me across the line when I had the 2-step set at 2500 rpm, so I dropped it to 2000 rpm and it was still pushing but not as bad. I could only build 1lbs of boost. Next I'll try a Wilwood proportion valve to give the rear brakes more holding power. A 4l80e w/transbrake is in the works. Should have it in by the end of summer.

Re: My Turbo Dreams Have Come True
I got a chance to do some racing last night until 4am this morning against some dudes from Atlanta. So I turned the boost up to 16lbs for the first time and it was crazy. I won both of races against a quoted 650RWHP+ ZL1 putting 2 buses on him and then a Procharged 09 Vette that boasted 800RWHP+ I put 5 cars on him. When I popped my hood, the look on their faces was priceless The car was putting in work. I'm very pleased with this simple set-up. I will need to address the fuel issue before I go any higher on the boost.
