Why do people want gold for garbage out here???

I just don't understand it.. I message someone on here about a car (or what's left of it) that was for sale and was posted for sale Oct 2013.. it's March of 2014 now.. The block is cracked the hood is trash the interior looks like it had 13 wild cats locked inside for a week and they decided to sharpen there claws. The thing hadn't moved in well over a year.. He asked me what my offer was on it and I asked what he wanted for it because I didn't wanna be rude.. I told him I didn't need the motor trans hood or his precious gta wheels as long as I had something I could roll the around on.. and he comes back with he wants 1k and couldn't go any lower... SERIOUSLY????? I tell him I couldn't go more then 500 on it and he says no thanks I can get 250 for the body after I strip it and I'm thinking to myself.. After the wheels dash and tail lights there's nothing left to strip off the POS.. don't get me wrong I LOVE 3RD GENS I have owned 6 over the years and I try my best to sell them in better shape then when I bought them.. but this guy just struck a nerve.. I've picked up running cars for 500$!!!!!! Gave Them A Bath A Nice Detail And A Tune Up And Sold Them For 1k Or more.. What Is It With People Out Here In The Mid West With These cars?? I don't understand.. I'm from new jersey and I'm stationed here at ft sill.. back home I can find these cars running and driving cheaper then I can find a rolling Body here for... like wtf?? Sorry rant over.. If anyone has a rolling body prefer a firebird that doesn't have a bunch of rust or a twisted frame.. for cheap let me know please

Re: Why do people want gold for garbage out here???

Yea. Good luck with that.
I searched far aand long for the car Ihave now. Not really happy w it since its ttops.
I really wanted a hardtop. But the nicer ones I found were in 4th gen ls1 m6 price ranges.lolol
Its just not gonna happen. Don't make sense to me to pay 4th gen ls1 prices for a stock iroc.
Most of the owners made the car out to be some kind of rare car very high in value.
Oh well i got a soft spot for third gens. Only real reason i mess w them.
Cool looking cars and run very well after heavy mods. like a ls or turbo etc.
But stock.meh.

You're not alone, prices on thirdgens in Canada are ridiculous as well. $2-3k for clapped out rusted junk with missing body parts. Had to go to the the US for mine.

See a trend here ? Its only going to get worse too. 3rd gens are quickly disappearing, especially the early years. I just saw an '86 IROC in red for sale on CL locally for $5,000. Seller said it was rare - not yet it isnt considering 1986 was the most made in red but soon it will be & it'll only climb in value. It won't be long before these cars start seeing 1st gen prices.

And the 5th gens will soon be in cash price range. I'm waiting around for the 5th gens and new challengers to come into cash pricing. Even a blown motor or trans v6 would do.
Ls swap is easy

Lt1 cars have been in the lower price range for close to 10yrs now.
The high mile ones have a lot of problems 9/10 times.
I wouldnt reccomend a lt1 car to anyone who has limited skill working on cars.and doesnt enjoy working cars.
You will be working on them alot. on the plus side will learn alot if don'tknow how

Re: Why do people want gold for garbage out here???

I've seen that, too. Prices for the really nice cars are rivaling those of the LS1 4th gen cars, or more. I have a super nice 92 that I paid good money for in my garage. In this area of Louisiana, we have a really humid, rainy climate that plays hell on cars over the long haul. People have torn those driver quality cars up, and they are basically gone from the landscape here. You see the occasional late 80's to 92 car, almost all RS cars, suffering through the daily drive business, but that is about it. I will give you a personal example to draw from. I bought a fairly rough local 88 IROC back in 07. I promised myself that I'd keep my eyes open for something nicer, and then move to the better car. That never happened. I sold the 88 in 2011 without ever running into anything better in the 4 years I kept it. The new owner promptly crashed the car while drunk, and finished it off, too. I had to go all the way to GA to buy a nice car in 2012, and that is just how it is now. Keep in mind that the guys in my late 40's age group that owned the early 80's cars are at the top of their earning potential, and are looking at picking up these nice 3rd gens for themselves, now that they can afford it and have room to accommodate them in their plans. These guys will pay for a good car, as I did. The days of the throw away $500 3rd gen are nearly over. The drivers are about all gone, and the nice cars are gonna cost $ to buy. I see the 4th gen cars dropping out around here, too. Produced in far fewer numbers to start with, they are being raced and wrecked into history, too. I am in the used car business, and see the 5th gen cars taking the beating now. It is amazing how badly some folks treat cars. I see late model pieces that are so dirty and beat up, that I don't care to even sit in them. Won't be long that clean, performance 3rd gen cars will be bringing mid teens $ regularly. I'd pay that now for the right car, for sure. The comparison to 4th gen prices is without merit, as the performance of the cars is not what is driving the price increases. It is nostalgia. I know.

Re: Why do people want gold for garbage out here???

ipaid a good price for mine when I got it. hell just for grins. try to buy a 70 1/2 split bumper Camaro. I have seen rusted shells for over 5 grand. there are a lot of people that want monstrous money for third gen parts. hell a recalibrated 110 speedo is @125. some people want anywhere from $250 to $450 for interior plastics. but remember one thing.

as long as people are spending the money for these parts at those prices they will continue to rise. and its not like you can find a junk yard full of them anymore either.

At this rate, in a few more years, my car might be worth what I paid for it back in '82.
Not that I would sell it.

Re: Why do people want gold for garbage out here???

We're at the point now where production vs cars still on the road are not relative to each other. You're almost as likely to see an 89 Turbo Trans Am in mint condition as you are an IROC-Z in mint condition. Maybe it's different in the northern states where many have summer and winter cars. I used to live in Canada and saw lots of nice 3rd gens during the summer months. But in Texas, where cars are year round driven, it's ultra hard to find a mint car. Even harder to find a low miles mint car.

To show an extreme example, Pontiac sold over 106,000 Sunbirds in 1987. Here's a picture of my old '87.

Name: DSC02061.jpg
Views: 35
Size: 112.6 KB

I drove the car daily for 11 years, right up to 2007. But it was rare to see another one in that body style in any condition. They just don't exist anymore. It was a 20 year old car by the time I was done with it. How many pre 1994 Sunbirds do you see today? It's no different with 3rd gen F-bodies. We've all enjoyed them and owned them and driven them for so long that we forget how many years it's really been since they were new and plentiful on the road. My car is 25 years old now. When it was new, there was no such thing as a 25 year old Camaro or Firebird.

Now debating about a $500 vs a $1,000 car. That's happened since cars were invented. Everybody thinks their own car is worth tons. And the buyers always think they're worth way less.

Re: Why do people want gold for garbage out here???

Reid, was that a Turbo Sunbird? I had an 84 Turbo bird with the thm125 trans in light green over dark green. It even had a luggage rack on the trunk! I used to mutilate the unsuspecting with that thing. It was high strung, at 150hp from 110 cubes. It would run low 16's, which was mighty respectable for an early sport compact back then. Mauled me some Supras, RX7's, and a few 3rd gens with that thing!!

Re: Why do people want gold for garbage out here???

I had a buddy pay $300 in '98 for a running 86 Trans Am, the TPI was gone and it had a carb but it was an other wise complete car. Was it clean, not by any means, it had been stolen at some point and kinda "put back together" but it was still a complete running and driving car. I had another buddy who sold his 89 Formula 350 in '02 with 120K miles on it for $4K? Was that car super clean, no, but it was really nice for the age and miles.

The thing I see getting the 4th gens is that the V8 cars get parted left and right. With the LS1 cars you see nice condition cars get parted because the motor has a knock. The LT1 cars, most are in such poor condition the ones I see parted are probably a little to fargone to save or worth saving. With them, they're either really nice or barley hanging on to life. I can't knock it because GM doesn't make a lot of stuff any more and being so much of the components are interchangeable I have benefited from some of those nicer cars getting parted out. But I think a big problem will be as so many get parted, in 10 years or so parts are going to be hard to find. The salvage industry has changed a lot over the last 20 years, most cars get crushed with tons of good parts still on them and sold for metal to the developing world and industry over seas like in South Korea. Countries that don't have the mineral mining capabilities or lack resources depend on that scrap metal to keep their industries fed.

Where in Canada are you, Copperhead?

I have been watching kijiji in Ontario for over a year, almost 2. Helped a buddy pick up a 30k km '82 for $4500. Mint under-carriage and body but it needs some interior attention. For the rest I see total basket cases for upwards of $2k and running cars that need work for up to $4k High mile drivers in good shape up to $6000. But then it stops - there seems to be a gap between $6k and $8k or so and then there are heavily modified enthusiast cars and then "restored" into the $teens. It seems that the decent driver cars that are in nice, cared for shape, but not restored that I would think would be in the $6k-8k range just aren't out there much. I think a previous poster mentioned that these cars are kept low miles/show and cared for or driven to end of life. Those of us that want a really nice car, without paying for a show car, are finding it hard to get something.

I unfortunately am stuck with my Iroc as ive already put alot in it only to realize i still have to do the interior and some bodywork. It has a new trans w/ rebuilt motor with a roller cam. I even changed the rear gears and incorporated a posi and TA Per. cover. among other things.

This car should've gone to the yard, but after all that has been done so far I can't give up now

A rough GTA roller for 1K.... sure a bit high right now but will probably be a good buy a few years from now.

I tried to buy a shell (not roller)... a freaking shell of a 69 charger. Guy wouldn't come down off 5K. and it needed EVERYTHING.

Re: Why do people want gold for garbage out here???

People can ask whatever they want for a car, what it actually will sell for is a different story. I've bought 8 sub $1000 third gens in the past two years and a few of those came from persistence. If you keep checking in on overpriced cars, the owners may one day come back to reality and you can purchase the car for a reasonable price.

I dumped a 91 Firebird to the boneyard here and they gave me $288 for it. Engine, Trans, newer Firehawk tires. This is the condition I found it in a month or so later. Even had a Notchback lid on it. I couldn't get anyone to take it away. Too many projects going on in the garage.

Re: Why do people want gold for garbage out here???

A lot of people only see their cars as transportation and nothing else. They have no clue what is going on with their cars and sometimes seem oblivious to the fact that they need to be maintained.

We hired a temp a few years ago that owned a Pontiac 6000 and it was having some starting issues. I gave him a jump one day after work and asked him why he didn't just replace the battery. He looked at me and said "do you think they still make one for my car?". I just looked at him in awe and had to walk away.

My current project, an 87' Iroc, was picked up for $750 simply because the guy couldn't afford to fix it. Kid blew the engine and took it to a mechanic to get it fixed and couldn't come up with the money. Car sat at the mechanics shop for two years and then was moved to his farm for another year before I got my hands on it. I bought it from the mechanic for what the kid owed. The car was complete less the engine. So basically I got a completely rust free, straight bodied, 87' IROC hardtop with the G92 and Bose options and a T5.

Re: Why do people want gold for garbage out here???

Its just silly to me for the basket cases 3rd gend being sold for unrealistic amounts.
By comparison. I'm picking up a 00 185k mile running a4 blue title ls1 z28 w mods.near Dallas this Saturday for 3200$ + the trip.
Sorry. I just don't see the value at some of those third gens being sold at some of these silly. But then again. Throw it up there and see what sticks

Re: Why do people want gold for garbage out here???

Disagree. I like them equally. A nice early LT1 Formula with the banshee nose, a 30th Anniversary Camaro, LS1 TA, or even just a Black or Silver 98-02 SS with the chrome 10 spokes. All look very good.

A lot of people hate the 4th gens because GM finally figured out the drivetrain options. You either had to man up and buy the V8, or live with the secretaries car. None of this V8 for the posers option.

And sorry, the 305TBI, and even the 305 itself, should never have been offered in the V8 thirdgens. Should have been 350TPI in your choice of Auto or Manual. It would have put those "Smashed that V8 Camaro" kill stories to rest.

Course, now you can't outrun that Mom and Kids in their new Camry even if you had a 350TPI under the hood.

Re: Why do people want gold for garbage out here???

Help me value my car!
Blue 1990 IROC-Z 95k original miles. Hard top 5.7 liter
Interior 9/10
Exterior 8/10 due to the chin spoiler being faded and rear hatch glass has a scuff.
everything works A/C PW,PD, Etc.

I bought it 2 years ago from the original owner for $9500 and have since replaced the heater core and put on brand new tires.

what do you guys think is a good selling price?

Personally I feel you overpaid when you bought it. If it's in good shape like you say I would say around $7,000 max.

If it is any help, I just flew to Costa Mesa California from Houston Texas to buy a 1991 Z28. People want to compare third gens to fourth gens but there is really no comparison. The car was what I wanted so I flew out and bought it. If you have the money it is worth what you will pay, If you don't it really doesn't matter. The car I bought has 100k miles. I paid $7500 for it

Re: Why do people want gold for garbage out here???

Thanks for the information. I finally got the thing out of storage and snapped a couple pictures. I have to clean it up before it goes for sale but here is an idea.

The car has 124,700 miles. 305 Tuned Port Injection w/ T- Tops.
I have all the sales documents from when it was bought new.

Pretty much stock but has exhast , shift kit, and stahl convertor. few basic mods here and there. Rims are stock but polished and painted. Car was black gold package when new but is now black/chrome. Has Dupont Black paint, no rust.

Interior was black, but is fairly faded with some dings here and there. Decent condition inside but not mint, outside real nice. Will get some interior pics if you think it would help get an idea. Found mouse nest in engine compartment so it smells funny comming out of storage ( mouse peed somewhere). Going to get it detailed and post for sale.

what do yall think?
