Re: SSBC caliper upgrade
The stock caliper isn't the weak part in the stock system.
Since it leaves the stock rotor in place, which is the one thing most inadequate by today's standards, probably not very effective.

Re: SSBC caliper upgrade
I actually have this kit on my Camaro and I unfortunately had them put on my car after I had my car sitting for about 5 or 6 months. So I couldn't tell If I have a little more stopping power or the same amount. I have slotted and drilled front rotors in the same diameter as factory and I am disappointed in the performance. I didn't want to put factory calipers back on the car. The pads in the kit aren't that good either.
I think that the biggest problems with our brakes are the brake booster and the brake master cylinder. With some newer, more modern cars, especially cars with good brakes, give better stopping power and better brake feel without having fancy brembo brake calipers or huge rotors.
Looking back, I would have just got factory calipers and then waited to get C5 Z06 hubs, rotors, calipers, pads, stainless steel lines, brake booster and master cylinder. The C5 booster and master cylinder would be more work, but I'm sure that someone on this forum have put them on their car. Someone does run a company that makes front brake upgrade kits in this forum (I believe) to make everything easy to bolt on and go.
Yes, I would then have to get C5 or other 17" or 18" wheels, but a racing magazine said that LS1 brakes are crappy so I won't go with a LS1 front brake conversion if good pads and a rear disk conversion doesn't give me good brake performance.

Re: SSBC caliper upgrade
Brake performance may not improve, but do the SSBC parts save you any weight? They are aluminum Vs. the factory iron, right?
The somewhat more expensive Wilwood kit claims to save up to 35 pounds of (unsprung?) weight.

Re: SSBC caliper upgrade
I couldn't find my bathroom scale so I couldn't give exact weight savings right now but I would estimate that the weight savings is around 10-15 lbs on each side. I wouldn't worry about the weight savings unless you are racing the car like I am, and still that is just the beginning of weight saving for my car.
With any brake upgrade you go with, get high performance pads. The braking performance starts with the pads and they're the easiest and most affordable upgrade anyone can do. If you have rear drums, convert those to discs too.

Most of the weight reduction in brakes comes from the rotor.

Re: SSBC caliper upgrade
One day when I change my brake pads I will take them off for a weight comparison, I just need to keep the old one. The SSBC calipers are significantly lighter when you pick them up; That is the important part.
