Re: ZZ3 Turbo Iroc - Round Three

i think it would be a wise decision to leave the gtr alone. its a badass car in stock form, and everybody will already be oogling over it anywhere you go. leave it sealed up, stock, and reliable.

i know the ysi car i've been working on had spewed some water out the overflow nipple on the radiator before i hooked the reservoir up, and that was just sitting there, no dragstrip passes. maybe try fixing that overflow hose and see if it still does it?
your upgrade list will make it faster for sure!!!

Re: ZZ3 Turbo Iroc - Round Three

Honestly if I ditch the tpi it defeats the whole purpose of staying Gen 1. I'd need a controller for the 4L80 anyway so it would make sense to go 5.3 + 4L80e + ecm/harness for $1200 than to dump $700 into a gen 1 intake and another $700 into a trans controller. I'd need heads anyway to make the intake worthwhile.. and I could probably sell my headers for almost enough to cover the LS hardware. So if I go much faster it would be a LS.

Re: ZZ3 Turbo Iroc - Round Three

errbody has an ls swapped (insert any kind of car you can think of), but very few have a stock looking thirdgen with 80's stuff running 9s. thats what makes your car so cool, imo. going to an ls would make it like all the others. will still be cool, though.

I understand the TPI intake design is not ideal, but I can prove it can and will move a third gen down the 1/4 mile at an impressive rate. There are turbo LS swapped third gens that don't clear the 1/4 mile faster than my TPI junk.

noone is saying they dont work . but u know as well as the rest of us that if u swapped that tpi intake out for a single plane efi or hsr etc the car would pick up a ton of power just from swapping the intakes

I can prove that too, although my TPI has been fully siamesed. When your at wide open throttle, you want the only bottle neck between the turbo and the combustion chamber to be the intake valve, as this will bring the turbo to its' most efficient point. If you have a section of the intake tract that is essentially smaller in diameter than the intake valve, then your slowing down the charge substantially, not to mention creating unnecessary stress and heat for the turbo itself. Lose the stock runners and boost pressure goes down while making the same amount of power at a lower psi, and much more power if you ran the same psi. I am sure your turbo TPI is a killer at the track, but you'll trap closer to 140-mph with a better intake running the same amount of boost pressure with your setup, as you'll flow more (efficiently), and spin a lot higher...

run it with no hood. you know you want to.
Roadkill style?

I will say I would chuckle to find out you were actually making more power than you thought you were but the box/converter was eating it up, and you were actually more at the limit of your fuel system than you thought you were.

Result: a nice clean exit for the line and no more melting hose.

For fueling I ordered a -8 to -6,-6 Y. Also when I bought the -6 line I bought enough to make the rest of the fuel lines needed to have dual -6 inlets on the fuel rails. Before I get too far into that project though, I've decided I need to come up with a spare hood that I can chop up. I want to simulate making the hood vents functional and compare underhood temps and the effect on the fueling issue. I have always observed the fuel temp to be over 125F when the problems are occurring. Today was no exception. So basically I need a cheap hood to cut some holes in and bolt it on to see what happens. Of course I check craigs and all of the hoods I've seen in the past six months are long gone and nothing is posted at this time.

Here is the new overflow line:

I've got an IROC hood in middle GA. You'd be doing me a favor by taking it away if you ever end up travelling up I-75 to Atlanta for business or something, I'm a stone's throw from the interstate. It's yours for free if you want it. Rust holes make it pretty much useless and worthless, but it's straight. I bought it for the louvers it had on it but I dont have a truck to haul it off anymore.

It's definitely making some good power but sometimes it is insanely too rich and other times it loses pressure so the fueling capacity drops when the fuel in the tank gets hot. I still say the fuel is boiling in the vacuum of the pump when the tank temp climbs.

We are going to pull the hood for a test, maybe tomorrow.. but previous times I've done that on a boosted car always ends up getting oily haze on the windshield. Maybe for a day though! I suspect it will give zero problems with that much cooling air going around the runners & fuel rails.

i will make u a hell of a deal on a procomp hsr if u want it
225$'s + shipping i have one sitting on the shelf , it was going to go on my truck but ive decided im leaving the truck stock

its brand new in the package never even pulled it out of the plastic but i did open the box , they go for 285+ shipping on flebay

Re: ZZ3 Turbo Iroc - Round Three

Ok. Questions...

What muffler?
Do you have the heat shield between the muffler and the fuel tank?
What fuel pump again?

My RS has a Z28 pump in it. I removed my heat shield a while back. I can't remember why I removed it but the fuel pump is LOUD after driving it and letting it heat soak.

Maybe the pump is actually bad? Maybe the regulator is bad? Maybe the pump is overheating? Maybe the tank is getting heat soaked by the exhaust?

Try dumping the exhaust or refabbing the exhaust to dump on passenger side only with a bullet muffler? Have you checked the temperature of the gas tank? I haven't read this thread in a while. I'm on my cell phone and didn't feel like scrolling back...

Just trying to help...

Re: ZZ3 Turbo Iroc - Round Three

Maybe you're overheating the fuel pump with that volt booster? When does it swing to 18 volts? You might be working that pump too hard. I don't know. Just making suggestions.

Instead of the canister type cooler u were talking about u gout try to fan up a factory type metal fuel line in front of the radiator in say 6 u bends before it enters the fuel rails...

Idk just trying to splurge ideas on how to get fuel temps down

The fuel temp coming out of the rail was consistently 125 with an entry of 120-121. That is measuring the outside of the fittings so my next plan is to build a sensor that I can put in the middle of the hose fittings on either the feed or return line. Then I can document the exact temp, rate of increase, etc.

No I've had four pumps, with and without booster. Not a specific pump or because of booster, which only goes to 18v in boost anyway.

Yes I got the GT-R.. was just having a relapse to how I was feeling last time I troubleshot this problem!

gm coolant temp sender , and u can log it with a spare input on the megasquirt

Re: ZZ3 Turbo Iroc - Round Three

Maybe find a way to measure the temperature in the tank? If the tank temperature is lower than the rail temperature... that will narrow down the search quite a bit.

Re: ZZ3 Turbo Iroc - Round Three

I don't think 120 degrees is a big deal, that's like a fever. I still think you should save the frustration and just buy a complete fuel system. Just go to the lake for a couple of weekends instead of installing temp sensors and driving yourself crazy.

ZZ3, if you haven't, if would be interesting to try a different brand of fuel.
