That doesn't mean the VATS module didn't die. My 1992 Firebird had the module stop working and I got no security light... at all. It also would exhibit the symptoms you describe, won't turn over,...

Fuel economy is why. GM made no official 350 convertibles. All of the 350s are either 1987 (maybe 88?) Customer Converted Camaros or 87-89 Firebirds. It's the same reason you couldn't get 350...

It's an 88, the 10th digit of the vin denotes year, which is a J thus translating to 88. I am unsure as to what tags you are referring to when you say they indicate 86.

You don't need a 5k machine to "pull the codes", a laptop, ALDL cable and TunerPro will allow you see every parameter the ECM is seeing. Even then, a paper clip will pull the codes.

I wonder if the Vision X 4x6 housing has the same great cutoff as the 5x7 housing. I am not happy with my current headlight housing.
