IMHO I wouldn't really expect any real noticeable gains, that is unless the chain is very stretched, but at that point you should hear it making all kinds of noise.

Makes sense. Not too into the whole car abuse thing and don't have a clutch to dump. May add a traction device of some sort, probably a posi. Running stock size street tires. May get a set of slicks...

Pretty sure you would have to cut down the axle tubes and then get shorter axle shafts. Not the easiest job out there and will require a good amount of skill and/or money if your not setup to do it...

Sounds like a starter to me too. My truck was doing the same thing. Starter gets heated up from the exhaust then won't work again until cool.
