skinny z - now that i look over my pics of my removal I see what you are stating. The 4 bolt axle plate & back brake plate hold the seal which puts pressure on the taper bearing. If this is the case...

Thanks for the info... this probably works well for the Camaro as it has a different airflow setup than the Firebirds. On my '84 the uptake of air only comes directly off the roadway and is 16" back...

I would think that a splitter on a TA would replace the stock air dam causing "cleaner" flow of air to the radiator. It would most likely not be visible from the front of the car since the TA's have...
