Negative/Derogatory/Off-Topic Responses in Threads

Not long ago, there was a long thread with high-spirited exchanges of opinions, ideas and site suggestions between members and site administrators, and it was eventually closed. But it got me thinking...

After years of continually reading pointless, negative, derogatory posts, I'm wondering if there's a way to let the original poster of a thread have the power to edit/delete those types of comments posted by others in his thread?

Whenever we post a response in a thread, we get an "edit" button which we can use to correct/re-write our own posts. So for the original poster of a topic, is it possible for him to get an "edit" and/or "delete" button on everyone else's responses in his thread, which he can use to correct and/or eliminate pointelss, off-topic, negative responses?

For example, the most commonly-offensive responses are from the "get rid of the 305 and drop-in a 350" guys. They rarely have anything productive to offer 305 topics, other than to ridicule those who ask for help with their 305s. In fact, it's gotten so bad that, noticeably, whenever someone creates a thread asking for help with his 305, his opening post contains one or two(or both) of the following statements: 1) "I'm eventually going to install a 350, but until then...," and 2) "I know I could drop-in a 350, but I'm not going to, so if that's all you have to say, then..." Yet, regardless, there are still ALWAYS some responses that say little more than "drop-in a 350."

Realistically, most people are probably not going to be dropping-in a 350, and regardless of the engine being a 305 or a 350, most people are probably not going for speed records with their builds anyway. Both engines can be built very nicely for street use, so therefore, it shouldn't be difficult for people to offer productive suggestions pertaining to the original poster's questions about his 305.

The irony here is that many of those guys who post those comments actually believe they are contributing productively LOL. But they are not, no matter how anyone wants to spin it, period. Therefore, such posts should be editable/deletable. And who's more able to supervise a thread better than the thread's own creator? So to leave or eliminate such comments should be left up to his discretion. Then as people learn that such posts will no longer be tolerated, it will begin to deter such comments, hopefully, eventually leading to them stopping completely.

This pertains to all off-topic, pointless, negative posts in any topic thread. I simply chose the 305/350 example because it seems to be the most prominent. But, in general, negativity is exhausting to read, and it seems to be getting worse, so we need to find a way to slow it down. I'm sure this post will even meet with its share of negativity LOL.

Thanks for the platform.

Re: Negative/Derogatory/Off-Topic Responses in Threads

I'm sorry, but that's not possible from both a technical standpoint (alteast not without significant modification) as well as a policy. If there is a violation of our rules/guidelines, it needs to be handled via Moderation by using the Report Post feature. You also must keep in mind that this is a discussion forum and discussion will occur by providing opinions, suggestions, comments and advise. The editing and deleting of posts are usually confined to guideline violations.

The Report Post feature can be found by finding and clicking on this icon in the offending post: and then providing a brief summary as to how it violates our forum guidelines.

Sorry to be quick on ending this, but this is something that Moderation needs to be involved with, as well as deal with.

Thanks.
