Re: Update on single turbo 87 Iroc - stock 5.7 tpi
Eric - definitely no plans to leave gen 1, except for using that 4L60e. I'm extremely pleased with what I'm seeing with this old tpi setup. Just a mild 355 with good internals is all I'll need in this car.
Drac - that's one of the things I've been thinking too. I checked from below and didn't see anything but could be cracked at one of the crank bolts. I almost upgraded it while the trans was out too but planning on having this engine out soon enough anyway.
Update: I went on the trip anyway. I've met another goal with this thing tonight, two actually, but no 7's yet.
Goal 1: Better than 20 mpg... got 21.5 on this trip cruising at 75 on I-10 and 55-65 on the back roads. If I ever get around to putting my VSS wire back in to the cruise I bet I can pick up another 1-2. Also we were cruising at 14.5-14.9 because I've never been able to tune with the lock up before. Tomorrow on the way back home we'll tune for a lean cruise into the 15's and see how it feels.
Goal 2: 1.79 60 foot! I even have a video of that one. I did redlight somehow but I'll take that with the 1.79. See below, though..
Did two 8.1x runs and one 8.2x on a spin. The last 8.1 run was a peak boost of 9.5 psi that dropped to 6.5 for the run past the 100 foot mark. This thing has 7's written all over it, but I cannot seem to get this stupid Megasquirt Boost Control working right.
On the way out of the track I missed a turn. When I pulled a u turn, I smelled oil on the exhaust. Drove about 10 miles on the Interstate and checked it when we got to the Waffle house. My dang 9 bolt cover has once again worked several bolts loose and was dumping lube out. There was a puddle about 2 X 6 inches under the diff and another under the muffler! I'm now convinced the housing is flexing and making the bolts get loose. Not sure how much is left in there so will stop by a quick lube in the morning and get it topped off. Found 3 bolts very loose (yes I have a small set of tools with me). Also thanks to walmart for making brake parts cleaner available at 1am just about anywhere in the USA lol. So yeah these 1.79's are rough on the 9 bolt I suppose. Hope it holds up a while.
Headed to Pensacola in the morning then back home to PC

Couple of new vids from the weekend. Car did great. Turns out it only lost about 1/4" of diff lube, phew! Fought with the boost controller and the usual megasquirt crap I deal with but otherwise a great 300 mile trip!

Track announcer seemed to appreciate the Iroc!

This video is more of a documentary on the trip along with a different view of the same runs from above.

that is a nice buildup man. i believe in cars like these, if your doing a somewhat of a budget build and not going all out and still want it to be streetable, you should buildup on the original drivetrain or if your going to swap, at least do it with some ingenuity or with moderate sized engines. i like this buildup too, the 350 tpi is nice and this shows how a lot of work can go a long way.

Well it's more of a tap but no it just makes the sound. I seem to hear it more on the driver side. Oh well, just adds more to the 'old pos stock iroc probably with a 305 TBI' sleeper image I project with it!

I've had too much bad luck buying engines in the past. I have a friend looking for one over there so I'll let him know about that.
Finally got my boost controller settings figured out on the MS! Silly me was putting PSI in the table but it needs KPA. Of course the only instructions that clarify that are for the new MS3 controller! Either way, I have it working and it's pretty stable at 13 psi now. On the first full boost runs the car would hit a wall at 5300 and wouldn't shift. After some head scratching we realized the AFR was going 10.0 at 4900 rpm! All of my previous 13 psi runs (when I fooled the boost controller enough to allow it), the boost was dropping to 9-10 psi by that rpm, so we had never actually tuned it under load at 13 psi in the higher rpm until now.
Car is becoming an animal now. If I get into full boost in second it will start spinning. Now to just get enough boost that it does that in third! Have a grudge match set up for Sunday at the track with a good friend of mine. He's got a Vortec 350/6 speed in a 79 TA with a 150 shot of nitrous. We're bringing it on a trailer because one of us expects to break something trying to out-do the other. Hope the weather and the Iroc holds up till then!

Haha I don't know about stickies... I like running in my street config. 1.79 60's are good enough and the 9 bolt might last a bit longer. I'm already having a housing flex issue on this 9 bolt where the cover bolts are working loose. I'm going to order that TA aluminum cover for it with the preloaders.
22 psi yes that is the final goal but I don't plan to run more than 16-18 on the stock engine - eventually. If I can get into the 7.80 range at 13-14 psi that's probably where I'll stop until I have enough resources set aside to build a new engine. It's possible I will go for one final trip down the track and on the dyno with 18 psi on it at some point. Would love to see what it can do but I also like driving this car as often as possible. In fact I think I might use it today, because I hate the rental car I've been given while my truck is back in the paint shop.
Dyno session is definitely planned.
The ticking sound is still there btw. It doesn't seem any worse but it hasn't gone away either. We'll see where this road leads....

Could it be an exhaust leak?

probably exhaust leak or a sticky lifter

Interesting on the 9 bolt, maybe you should look into some form of bracing. Just saying. Hell even having a bar across the back that is preloaded to push outward would probably help with some of the flexing. Nothing a little welder magic couldn't wrig up.
That being said I agree with you on the weather. Too much longer it's to the in doors we go for winter up here. Chicagoland cold is no good for doing car stuff. It's already getting borderline better enjoy what we have.

Re: Update on single turbo 87 Iroc - stock 5.7 tpi
Busy weekend ahead with the Iroc IF it stays together long enough!
Saturday - There is a dyno day about 70 miles north of me in Dothan, Al. I've been wanting to go up there on a weekend night anyway so I could check out the street scene there. If all goes well I'll be up there tomorrow evening doing the $55 for two runs deal. Feels weird to pay for a dyno pull since I am the operator of one down here, but it's all part of my long term plans with this car.
Sunday - Sunday Funday test and tune at the local track. I have a couple of grudge match races lined up and I *thought* I had 14 psi stable with my latest tune, but this stupid MS boost control strikes again. I can only get 14 by making it spike to 16-17. Otherwise it spikes to 14 and then drops to 11-12. Tonight I will work on an open loop tune that just stays at one duty cycle. I feel like I am destroying the car with boost tuning - brake boost or otherwise building, overshooting and letting off.
The strange tapping noise continues but seems the same as it was.

have u tried putting some seafome in the oil. I heard it does wonders for sticky lifters! If having some problems with MS on bost control couldnt you just get an external boost controller and tune it that way?
