Single turbo oil return - anyone made one without removing oil pan?

I'm running into a difficult time with the oil return location for my single, passenger side mounted turbo. Some people have used the fuel pump blockoff plate but my research along with opinions from some seasoned turbo people leads me to believe this to be a restrictive drain location.

With that in mind, I would like to put the drain into the oil pan. The only logical location is right below the fuel pump area. This problem is my Iroc came with water cooling for the oil and the two lines come all the way around the pan and terminate right in front of the blockoff plate.

Ideally, I could switch over to solid motor mounts, which would give me considerable impovement in locaiton options but I *could* sneak a line between the existing mount and the oil cooler lines. It would be a difficult fit at best, unless I modify the bracket and move the cooling lines down and forward a bit.

Who has dealt with this issue and what did you do? I'd also prefer to just punch the pan and thread a fitting in. I've already got the tool and fitting. It looks like I really need to pull the pan to do it. If I could install the fitting immediately below the fuel pump, I think I can get to it without removing the pan.

Looks like I'm going to be dropping the pan and switching to solid mounts unless someone gives me better news. For that matter, who has used the fuel pump plate as an oil return with any long term success?

Thanks... zz3

I've been using the fuel pump location and have not had any issues. I use a block-off plate with a 12an fitting and 12an return line. Before that I welded a bung in the pan and that worked good too. I did remove the pan though.

Thanks for the info.. my friend tried this a long while back and had problems but I don't think he had a flow restrictor. He uses pan drains only now so I got his tapped blockoff plate and fitting today. One less dragon to slay. I will put a pan drain in when I get the engine out for a rebuild(shouldn't take long with 12-15 psi lol)

I've been using the the fuel block off plate for a few years... I'm also using a -12 line... Why make it harder on yourself then it has to be????

Re: Single turbo oil return - anyone made one without removing oil pan?

I installed mine without removing the pan. I punched a hole with a centerpunch then drilled SLOW with the proper sized bit covered in grease. I tapped the pan 1/2" NPT. I got a steel -10AN to 1/2 NPT fitting ($.98 from a hydraulic line shop) and covered the threads in JB weld.

I figured if it leaked I could remove the pan and TIG the thing together. It's been holding up just fine.

That whole area on mine is blocked by the oil cooler lines. I had to move them down to even get the blockoff plate return to fit. Now that I think about it, I still need to secure them. The blockoff plate seems to be working out ok for now, but I will do a larger pan return when the engine is out of the car.

I forgot about that. I have braided trans cooler lines, you can see them in the pics. AND I forgot I have alot more room than an F-body.
