Re: 87 Iroc LT1 Single Turbo Build

manual steering im guessing? I like the idea of the alt in the AC spot. I have a LT1 as well, and thought about moving it down there and maybe building a power steering mount on the other side of the balancer....sorta like the guys from speed inc did theirs. (except I have my crank trigger sensors mounted there currently) Nice engine bay btw....

Re: 87 Iroc LT1 Single Turbo Build

this is a killer build, your thread has given me alot of motivation to do a turbo myself. I saw the way you bolt the turbo to the radiator support, I thought to myself, how is that going to work when the engine torques. Good idea on the flex joints, Im wondering if some 5-6" flex joints would work better?. That might work if you decide to go with solid motor mounts.

Re: 87 Iroc LT1 Single Turbo Build

i have poly mounts and the motor doesnt torque much, I also may strap it.

Be careful with the flex joints. Some have an inner liner that comes apart and gets into the turbine. Get ones without the inner liner.

If you dont get ones with inner liner then the steel braid end up swelling and clogging the hot side. Ive seen so many that swell and only leave a 1inch or so hole.

Re: 87 Iroc LT1 Single Turbo Build

Well, the motor is tore down and the builder is gonna see if he can save it without new pistons, but i may have to go up to 4.040 with som new pistons.

I started working on the cage a bit but need to finish some electrical in the garage before I get into it lol.

Also started sanding the front bumper, ordered new clear turn signals bc the old ones were so faded.

Re: 87 Iroc LT1 Single Turbo Build

MORE AWESOME NEWS

CRACKED CRANK!

LT1 PARTOUT everything lt1 related is going out the door.

I am starting fresh with a LQ4 or LQ9 and building that.

plans are...if i find a good running long block, build a hot side and drive it on 8psi, and just collect all of my build parts.

OR just do a 408 stroker OR stock crank with forged rods/pistons.

So far I have sold about 2500 off my motor and still have about 2000 in parts to sell.

Going to get an LQ4 this week comming hopefully.

Went to the builders and got it quoted...

Compstar 6.125 rods ARP2000
Diamond or wiesco pistons (wiesco's are a bit cheaper like 200)
All the machine work etc. Around 2000

Right away I am getting the Single plan intake, Patriot extreme springs, LS7 lifters, and a SpeedInc. 236/236 112.5LSA Cam

That looks great. It is kind of odd to see all that expensive high tech stuff (LSx, FAST, etc) with that old tech. turbo though. I am sure it works good, but have you considered putting a BW turbo in there? Just some food for thought.......the S400 can take a Turbonetics HP-88 wheel.

EDIT: What ECM are you going to control it with?

I called up forced inductions and they only want 299 to put in a garrett 88MM wheel in my turbo :P, I may do this if I have enough money hahah
Also Stock LS1 PCM, You can run up to 3 bar on them etc.

That sounds about right. $200 for the wheel, $50 for machine work, $50 for the balance.
Did you ask about the cost of putting the HP-88 wheel in it?

Isn't the tuning software for the LS1 PCM really expensive? Like $500 or has it come down to where it should be?

Re: 87 Iroc LT1 Single Turbo Build

My friend uses HP tuners for his turbo builds and its 450 for base package and 600 for the wideband o2 package. It also comes with more features for that 600 but the big thing is it has a wideband input so you can datalog actual air fuel ratio with rpm/map. Its a nicer package to have but its pretty expensive. I want to get it for my trans am but this car is just bolt ons and needs minor tune work for now, 600 seems like alot.....especially since a shop down here can do LIFETIME DYNO TUNE for 500 bucks....meaning tuning is once time cost of 500 and if you ever change things like cam/heads/etc, you just pay for dyno time and no more tuning costs.

I went with EFI live since all my buddies use it. Got it off a guy that didnt use it so It has 2 open vin slots, for 500.

Both packages for tuning are extremely nice. I was wondering if you were going to try a Megasquirt setup on it. What ever you go with that thing is going to haul.

Im happy with the results for spraying in my garage and it being my first time base/clearing!
I will be painting the back half of the car once winter comes.
Also I got my new rachet shifter in, just awaiting the cable.

Also the car does run, just havnt driven it yet. I want to make sure its complete first hahah.

Just a few pics of "almost" complete. Still need to put the Z28 decals on the side skirts and put the inner fender liners in. Then work on the interior and put in the door bars for the cage now that most of the wiring is done.

Nice job on the build. I was wondering about the color code you used on the front end. Did you buy that paint locally? The color match is way off in that the front is way too orange. I would talk to the person mixing paint about it. It shouldn't have been that far off.

Re: 87 Iroc LT1 Single Turbo Build

Amazing build! Very impressive with the amount of work you did yourself from welding pipes to sand and paint. That's what this hobby is about and you're an inspiration to us all.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who can't thank you enough for all the updates and pictures that you shared. I know its hard to stop and take pics when you're trying to get things done.

Re: 87 Iroc LT1 Single Turbo Build

thanks man!

update again, the cage is done and the car is dialed in on 8psi for now due to my injectors being at 90% duty at 6200rpm (siemen 60# based on 43.5psi and i run 58psi then 1:1 rising rate!. So i take it the car is making good power, but hard to tell with the 3.00 gear its so linear!

I ordered some 80s to get me buy for the season. I am also going to the track on the 9th so updates to come!

Re: 87 Iroc LT1 Single Turbo Build

I am ripping the bottom end apart as my oil pressure seemed low and the engine builder looked at the filter and found a ton of bronze so looks like my bearings got wiped

Side note 11psi 4800rpm maxes 60# injectors haha.

Re: 87 Iroc LT1 Single Turbo Build

Im not really sure! I pulled an all nighter and pulled the engine last night and tore into it, there was TONS of bearing material jambed into the pickup tube. I hope the pump didnt get messed up. The builder is gonna have it torn down in the next coupler days to see what happened.

Another friend mentioned maybe the convertor pushed the crank, but mine has anti balloning plates so im not sure.

Ill keep ypu guys updated!

LOL Why would the new paint match something that was painted at the factory in what 1991. There is no 20 year magic paint fade gun. And buy the way, say your paint code is (1cQ) there are 14 differnt shades for that one color so it depends alot on the shade you pick for that paint code. Is that base/clear or a single stage paint you used?
