I'm considering copying your turbo headers... i kinda want mine to hang lower under the hood and your manifolds are what i envision fantastic work

Lookin' good. That header layout is very common for single turbo setups. You see it a lot at the turbo forums. The price has come down on the S400 with 80mm CW, 87mm TW, 1.10 A/R. Last time I looked it was only $250 more than the S400, 75mm CW, 96mm TW, 1.32 A/R. I would put the 80mm on it. You could go even bigger with the 88mm wheel, but the 80mm alone is enough to split your block in half.

Another turbo that may work is the new master power 83mm I heard that came out recently. They are cheap and seem to work well but the price on the S400/480 units is hard to beat and they are proven turbos.

I didn't know the MP came out already. Got any more info. on it? Yeah, the S400, 80mm CW, 87 TW, 1.10 A/R for $850 is a good deal. I would rather have it with a larger A/R on the turbine though. I don't see how MP could out-price the BW unit. The MP-76mm is already in the $800 range.

EDIT: The MP 76mm CW has a tiny turbine and will not make near the peak numbers that the BW S400 can because of this. I wonder what they did with the MP 83mm CW turbine wheel and A/R.

Re: 87 Iroc LT1 Single Turbo Build

I thought i seen it on turboforums that it was out but it may not be. Actually its 80mm not 83, i got confused with the bullseye wheel for the S480.

Bullseye has new 83mm wheel for the S400 series that is suppose to be awesome. I'd go that direction for a single

If you are going to upgrade to the 83mm, I would skip that and just have the NEW turbonetics 88mm CW put in it. TurboDave is selling the S400 with the 88mm already installed. It is a better wheel than the 83mm from bullseye. Keep in mind you need the "race cover" if going larger than a 80mm CW wheel. The cover has enough material to be machined out for the larger wheel. The standard/small S400 is maxed out at 80mm.

Jay_rich,
You may want to install a bung for exhuast back pressure and EGT measurements. Just some 1/8" or 1/4" NPT will do.

It is also one heck of a biased thread. Look who created the thread........the manufacturer of the wheel. They later go on to say that they never tested it against new 88mm wheels and that the bullseye 83mm does not flow more than the 88mm wheel.
The GT47-18 is the Garrett 88mm wheel. It clearly outflows the 83mm wheel by 100 lbs/min or more (120 to 200HP).

QUOTE
Let's be realistic...

A Garrett GT47-18 is rated at 139-140 lbs/min of flow.
A BW S480 with race cover is rated at 119-120 lbs/min of flow.
This "new" S483 is rated at 126 lbs/min of flow.

How is this new unit going to compete with a GT47-88 if it can't match it?

Can you clear this up?

Shops have been upgrading S400 turbos for awhile now. Most of these upgraded turbos were built with older technology TV series 85 and 88mm comp wheels, and maybe the S483 can out flow them. However, the numbers don't lie, (in fact, numbers are one of the only cold, hard truths in this world).

BTW, I have an Bullseye Power S480 with the older BW/JD style race cover and will be looking to upgrade soon. I just want to cut through all the bs which will no doubt be all over these boards.

Allow mw to put some clarity on the subject.

We have not compared the CompR-83 to any of the Garrett products only the Hybrid S400 with a Garrett 88mm compressor wheel.

We would like to compare it to the 47-88 units and see how it stacks up.

Re: 87 Iroc LT1 Single Turbo Build

Back to the drawing board in the 80mm and 82mm but the 76mm I have in stock the 80mm didn't make the power as it shoudl so the doing some wheel changes from what I found last week
This is from VSRacing on the MP 80MM turbos. Just didnt work out so its getting some new wheels i guess to make the power an 80mm should.

My guess is the turbine wheel choking it. MP seems to run the same TW for the 60mm, 64mm, 76mm CW. If they did the same with the 80mm CW then of course the TW is limiting it. With all the engineering they have I think they probably wouldn't have done this.

Re: 87 Iroc LT1 Single Turbo Build

well a I havnt dont much work as the garage is cold as **** and I just started insulating. And havent got my heater. Right after xmas im going to finish the garage and put the heater so it will be ball out then!

Anyways I cut the rad supports out in place for a nice thick 1 1/4 bar and a 1inch bar at the bottom to mount the turbo and give more body support.

There shouldnt be any issues with heat where the turbo is as I have the turbo blanket and have about 4inches from the Fans and the waterpump.

I am also waiting for my V-bands and my Extreme velocity Car hat to come in to finish the hot then cold side.

Jay

Re: 87 Iroc LT1 Single Turbo Build

Well today I got all the seats out (pending sale) and Made the merge for the turbo! I decided to make it divided for future turbo swap (S400-S480-S485) Since they are divided.

I will add the wastegate after all the hot side is done.

Still waiting on my damn v-bands to come in so I can start.

You got that easy man. 15 psi on pump gas will do 700 with good tune. Do you have 93 oct at all? 91 w touch of meth will be just as good tho.

Re: 87 Iroc LT1 Single Turbo Build

I finished the crossover minus the wastegate bc I need some pipe for that still. The heads are going out tomorrow to be machined to insure they are flat and glass beaded then washed.
Im suppose to get my picker thursday so I may Yank the motor this weekend and reassemble it, then repaint the entire engine bay!

I ended up trading my intake for the head work since it was around the same price, Im gonna get an efi intake since I didnt know the company made one.
OR a vic jr and keep the stock hood.

Re: 87 Iroc LT1 Single Turbo Build

Well got some small things done today.

I made some rad mounts, but ran outta steal so couldnt make my bottom mounts.

I got the trans all unbolted and everything off the motor to make it easier to pull.

Also painted my Synapse 50mm wastegate and kinda rebuilt it all. The owner before has an issue controlling over 20psi. So I take it apart, all the vacuum fittings were like 2 threads in then JB welded, and its a 50mm gate so 2inch in/outputs he welded some 1 3/4 pipe in it.

So i got EvilTom to weld some AN fittings on the gate and I opened the V-bands up to accept the 50mm pipe and changed the bushing inside to match. also cleaned up the inside and now the gate opens 100% not like before where it only opened like 75%

Next step is yank the motor thursday then take it all apart and replace every seal, then drop the suspension and repaint the entire engine bay!

Hopefully the motor will be back in the car within the month, so I can keep everything on track!

Jay

Re: 87 Iroc LT1 Single Turbo Build

well i was so far, got the motor out, cylinder 1 has some scoring (prob due to the rings bcing gapped for n/a for the previous 3 seasons)
So for peace of mind I a yanking the motor apart and sending it in for a hone and new bearings and rings.
More money I dont have... car may get delayed some, but at this point goal is really have it done and tuned for LTx shootout in september.
In the mean time I will finish the engine bay and paint everything then work on the cage untill i come up with funds for the motor.

Re: 87 Iroc LT1 Single Turbo Build

Well I got quoted 1100 (rough quote) If I take it in and he does the tear down and rebuild including the parts needed and hot tanked etc.

Since the motor is at a hault I started the engine bay, I ground it down to bare metal (what is primed)

Also finished up my rad mounts, it is now solid it doesnt move one bit!

Also heads are all finished, and took some pics of the cylinder wall it isnt too bad but worth going over.

oh look what fits!!

NOTE INTAKE WAS JUST TEST TRIAL BORROWED (as it is carb and not EFI)

No cowl needed with a victor JR, I didnt wanna go the JR route but I think I will achieve my goals on the jr.

Also I got my megasquirt 2 V3.0, Just ordered my harness and USB cord also.

Looks good, you planning to just block the thermostat, drill the manifold for like a 1/2 NPT fitting and run the water to remote housing like the LT1 uses?

Im going to be just drilling the bolt holes for the LT1 heads, and milling off the SBC thermostat off the intake.

I just need to wait till i go to summit to get my intake now.

Im going with the Victor E (i think is just and EFI jr but with a higher RPM range and and hear better flow) Edelbrock lists the same heights for them so I should be good.

Re: 87 Iroc LT1 Single Turbo Build

Pretty sick work you got going here. Havent read the entire post word for word but i was curious.... As far as the 1 inch bar at the bottom that has the mount for the turbo, are you goin to leave the mount on the bar the way it is? Im no engineer but i would assume that since the engine will torque, the use of some sort of bushing in that area would give it some room for movement instead of being directly mounted to the bar which i would assume would see some sort of stress... Correct me if im wrong, just though id throw that out there.... None the less, great job.

Re: 87 Iroc LT1 Single Turbo Build

Yes the flex pipes are there for the torque movement, I have poly mounts so the motor doesnt move much, I am also going to strap the drivers side so it cannot OR get solid mounts but that may screw up the placement of the motor, and I dont feel like re-welding the hotside lol

Im painting the engine bay this week! pics to come! Its all primed and all the steering components are being replaces with brand new parts

Re: 87 Iroc LT1 Single Turbo Build

Well busy week so far!

I dropped the K-member and a-arms off the car.

Painted the K-member, polished every single bolt that came off the car so they look shiney new again. The re-painted the engine bay and underside of the hood.

I also started the body work on the car (hood so far)

Also my Megasquirt harness arrived as well as all brand neww ball joints, tie rods (in and out) idler arm etc.

Re: 87 Iroc LT1 Single Turbo Build

Well put the motor in again for the 3rd time to test my new badass (i think bc its free and uses the tensioner) alt relocation setup and it is my own design or at least i think since i have never seen anyone do it.

Also took a pick of what i have got done on the car so far...

Motor will stay in until I get the megasquirt and wiring done then come back out for machining.

Which I am thinking im gonna have to go .040 over to clean up the score marks since it has been honed at .030 over already. So new diamond -31cc fored induction pistons may go in!
