Turbo exhaust muffling

You guys running turbos, how many of you are running mufflers? Im getting pretty close to firing up my twin setup and Im wondering if I need to tap into my y-pipe to use the muffler. I was thinking about just dumping each turbo at the trans x-member. Anyone have some sound clips?

Re: Turbo exhaust muffling

no pics of your combo thus far? Turbos do quiet down the exhaust, but typically people just run it through the catback and then run a cutout for while racing.

Re: Turbo exhaust muffling

How loud do think it would be?

Here are some pics from earlier on:

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/powe...ng-closer.html

It is quite a bit closer now. I am hoping to start it sometime this week. I still need to plumb up the cold side though. Right now I am going to go non intercooled. I plan on running E85 and if I still hve any problems I will add a water injection setup. This has been a ton of work but I am very pleased with the results.

Re: Turbo exhaust muffling

I had my single turbo exhaust from loudest to quietest: dumped before the rear axle no muffler, all the way out the back no muffler, and all the way out with muffler. The first was just annoying because whenever the exhaust ends under the car it's too loud and you smell fumes whenever you're stopped. The second was a lot better because you don't have the fumes anymore, but was still a little too loud for my daily driver. The third and current, I spliced in a Magnaflow muffler, which not only made it a little quieter but also toned it.

Re: Turbo exhaust muffling

First setup was the twin turbos to a 3.5" y-pipe, then 3" SLP catback. Very quiet, but too restrictive.

2nd setup was unmuffled boomtubes out the passenger side. Too loud (for the street), and bad droning on the highway.

I added a 3.5" in/out Dynomax Ultraflow muffler before the boomtube, and now it's pretty perfect.

That's pretty sweet. I never thought I would like side pipes, but those are low profile and look really nice!

Re: Turbo exhaust muffling

I have a Dynomax catback and since putting the turbo setup in its really quiet compared to my old 383. I have an electric cutout right in front of the rear wheel so I can make its as obnoxious as I want. nice for when you just want to cruise and not have all the noise.

Let us know when you get new sound/video clips with the muffler added on. I'd love to see how much things quieted down!

Re: Turbo exhaust muffling

Get some Ultraflow mufflers or something similar. Those mufflers do not have any restriction at all, you can see all the way through them, but with the turbos they give a nice powerfull tone. If its too loud with just one, put another.

Put some heat shielding on the braking system, braking power will get spongy or can be completly lost.

Are you talking about the Ultra Flow Bullets? I need something in that configuration.

Hey Andris,

Ok I just fell in love with your wheels... Which brand, offset and size are those?

Re: Turbo exhaust muffling

Well I just ordered some spiral flows. From the few sound clips I found, they sounded nice. I heard a few people complaining of power loss. I can see a little restriction but not much, so I will see how these go. I want something to keep the sound down and the bullets looked like they would be too loud.

Re: Turbo exhaust muffling

I do have one Ultra flow about 30" long 3" dia. on the center and two small 2 1/2" x 12" long on each tip and it sounds great, but if you are cruising and keep the rpms at 1800 to 2200 +- the deep tone gets into you after a while.

I am going to upload a youtube vid right now that I just took.
