free hp adder?

hey i just came up with a lame idea that im gunna try out on my junker work car. paid $200 for a 83 civic
anyhways. heres what i have planed.
some of you guys im sure seen or heard of the electric turbos.
i searched them up and the prices are around $200 - $500 for a kit.
i watched a test video of them and they sound like a hairdryer!!!
so thatswhat i came up with.
have a hairdryer and attach it to the intake cover snorkle thing. anyways.
i drew out a drawing on good ol' paint program and here it is.

have a on and off switch inside the car. i would remove the heat coil so there isnt hot air blowing into the engine. you can get some cheap hairdrys for like $10 or something like that ayways.
but i was thinking of adding maybe 2 hairdryer for alittle extra air.
what do ya guy think? i say its totally hippy.
a buddy of mine came up with this intresting idea of sticking a gas powered leaf bower. and have the pull cord inside the car so you just yank on the cord and vroom! turns on the leaf blower. and a throttle for it inside the car as well so you can control the air. since thos things blow pretty good air. i thought it would be pretty rad to put on maybe my civic. cost me $200 for it anyways so i dont really give what happens to it. it will be an experement tho. but im notgoing to buy a $100 leafblower just for that lol.
ill try the hairdryers for sure.
driving along and turn on the hairdryers and feel the rush of he added hp!! buckle up!
i sound like a 13 year old kid. haha im all pumped up about this! haha

Re: free hp adder?

What goes in must come out , so I'd put the second hair dryer in the exhaust pipe

Re: free hp adder?

ill just cut off the muffler and the cat. should free up some exhaust flow :P
----------
to bad my car doesnt have AC. i would just hook up my AC to it so ill get some cool air in there. no need for an intercooler when you have AC! but i dont so that idea is out the door

I have plenty of faith in the hairdryer, in fact, I bet it outlasts the Honda's engine....

Seriously though, go for it. Am very curious to see the results now....

Re: free hp adder?

Dude come on , the load on the alternator and the restriction will cost you atleast 5 hp .
What about increasing the airflow as the engine gains rpm , only two speeds on a hairdryer , people have spent tens of thousands of dollars to efficiently pump air into their engines by different methods - roots type superchargers , screw type superchargers , turbos , NOS and so on , I don't think they would point the answer at their head every morning and not get it .
Just below your airconditioner compressor there's an airpump already on your motor and it increases speed with engine rpm because it's driven by the belt , but it's not a very efficient pump and it could never move enough air to create any boost .
At one time someone on ebay was selling electric superchargers but I haven't seen them lately , they probibly got sued and went out of business .

Re: free hp adder?

Assuming no inverter loss. A 120V hair dryer at 500 watts needs 500/120 = 4.2 Amps. 1HP = 746 watts. 500/746 = .67HP to push air into the engine. All that says you are wasting your time with a hair dryer.

EDIT: How much do you think the inverter and wiring will cost?

For the money you are talking you would be better off piecing together an N2O kit.

Re: free hp adder?

500 watts is usually the low setting , most hair dryers are 1200 or 1500 watt on high , I don't know how much power you'll save by disconnecting the heating element but you'll still put a substantial load on you alternator and battery . Ohm's law , know the law , obey the law .

Re: free hp adder?

it wont work, and those ones on the internet dont work either, i used to have a video of guys mounting one on a honda and doing before and after test, i really shouldn't have to tell you why it wont work if i do then you really must learn more about cars, incase you do need to learn more its very simple, no hairdryer in the world will blow out more air then then motor already breaths in on its own, there for you will see no PSI increase in the intake, that aside when ever you do add more air say with a turbo or maybe a super charger you also need to add more fuel or you just go lean and burn parts, dont waste your time even thinking about this idea, instead use that time to learn more about boost in general, come over to www.d-series.org i am a member there my name is boosted91 i have a 300 whp honda crx and i am only using a SOHC d16z6

Re: free hp adder?

being bored i understand, but why not duct tape a tennis racket to the roof , or make a wing out of Styrofoam? I mean your idea will do nothing more then these 2 ideas i gave would, so why even bother? being deadly bored is ok, but wasting your time and thinking something will come out of the wasted time is another on second thought you better not come to the honda forum, those guys would LOL you right out the door if you know so much about cars as you think you do you would not even have embarrassed your self by suggesting a hair dryer as a hp adder lmao. have fun

Bravo! This way you don't have to disconnect the heating elemants in the hair drier! I believe this is the turbo-durbo set up right? Been discussed a million times at:

www.getalifeandstartmakingrealpower.com/forums

But seriously (te-he I actually used the term "seriously" in this response) I think you would need some sort of check valve on the "fresh" hair- uh I mean AIR- side of the "Y" or all your "boost" would be vented out the 2nd inlet instead of raising manifold pressure. Make sure you upgrade the fuel system or you'll burn a hole in those teeny-tiny pistons.

I really don't mean to knock you for asking- hell it was an honest question. But when you slow pitch like that you can't blame a few of us knuckle heads for swinging for the fence!

Good thing you found out about that headgasket now , the boost from the hairdryer would have taken it out for sure .

Why upgrade the fuel system? The hairdryer is going to be a restriction and make the engine run richer as is. Just swinging at a slow pitch here.

Why is there more useless threads like this around here lately? Have the other boards started cracking down and forcing people to go to other boards?

Re: free hp adder?

True. For the hair drier. But I was working off stiletto's leaf blower idea. I think this one's got a chance. But to save drain on the electrical system, I suggest we put a gasoline generator in the trunk!

And you're right. This thread's dead.

Re: free hp adder?

i was thinking about that leaf blower. i was thinking haveing agas one so your now using up any electrical one. and have the pull cord in side so your driving along. going up a steep hill and having trouble making it up or just going to slow. pull the cord. and have a throttle leaver thing inside as well. and just let on the throttle abit and off you go.
im sure it blows more air then an electric one but how would i know i never owned one before.
and whe you need to fill your car. just pop the hood. and fill the leafblower while your at it.

And you're right. This thread's dead.
I have said long ago that this is the best way to go:

Get a used Ninja EX250 or CR250/KX/RM engine and put it in the trunk running a supercharger. It will give enough HP to run the SC. No powertrain engine loss and slight weight penalty.

Re: free hp adder?

my neighbor once tried to turbo his got cart by bending a coper pipe so that it would fit from the exhaust to the intake. He took the air cleaner off and ran the pip in to the mouth of the carb. I stooped him from doing it explaing that is not how a turbo works and all he would be doing is providing hot dirty air and making probably not even work. He was only 14 at the time, I was 10.

Re: free hp adder?

You would have so much more fun with a big wet shot of nitrous on this car, trust me it's awesome.

Re: free hp adder?

Nitrous is the right way to do it , but don't mention that in this thread , these guys will invision a tube from their throttle body to inside their car with a can of starting fluid hooked to it .

Re: free hp adder?

No, no no. You've got the wrong idea. You need to loop the exhaust straight back into the intake, so the pressure will give you more boost.

Re: free hp adder?

what if you got an air compresser and pump it up to like 75psi or something in the trunk of the car. have a hose from it to the intake. i wonder if it would make any difference.......

Re: free hp adder?

Just get a tank of Oxygen then take the mask off and run the hose into the intake.

No CFM just PSI, does not make power. You need that volume of air to make a gain.

Re: free hp adder?

i say put it in there and put the cat on craigslist then videotape the people's reactions when they come to see the car and post them on you tube for us that is the best idea yet and you don't even have to sell then car but you do have to ask the people if it is ok for you to post it on the internet then just tell them that you knew the car was a joke that is why you recorded them but you are gonna give it to your cousin or something! this idea is A1 top notch
