twin turbo 400
i was wondering is it worth makeing a 400 turbo charged. and would it require a special turbo because of how big the motor is. also what kind of compression ration would this require

Re: twin turbo 400
Yeah its worth turbocharging.
No you wont need any special turbo.
The ideal compression ratio you want will depend on several variables including the octane of fuel youd like to run and amount of boost.

I'll answer your question with this..
I'm running a 406 sbc, w/twin mp t-70 turbos, 9:1 CR, 10# boost for starters. Runs just fine in this texas heat..can drive in bumper to bumper traffic without overheating.

HAHAHAHA! Damn!
Anyway... to answer the original posters question...
Do the 400. There is a guy over at www.theturboforums.com who runs 5.60's in the 8th mile on a FACTORY 400 block. And its a 2-bolt block! And just like him, I would fill it. Im getting my 383 filled.
I would build it with 8.5:1 compression and run an S400 turbo. The guy I mentioned above is running the same turbo.
It appears to me that turbo's are a lot easier on engines than nitrous it. If Im not mistaken, a 5.60 8th mile SHOULD convert to somewhere around an 8 sec 1/4 (correct me guys if I am wrong). Just dont go crazy with the boost and PLEASE stay away from detonation!!!

Haha is that kid banned yet?
Boosting the 400 can make for lots and lots and lots of fun. Just make sure you pay attention to temperatures and cooling capabilities of your car. Ceramic coating can really help this if it ever becomes a problem. Either a huge single 45r or twin 35r's should do you some good.
Lag isn't really an issue though, just remember that lag only means the engine is running like a stock motor until it hits boost. That's it.

Re: twin turbo 400
A 400 would spool a 101mm turbo quite nicely. :-D
PS- A stall and a transbrake will destroy almost any tire coming out of the hole, lol. Leaving the line at 15psi coming from a 101 = 1000ft wheelstand.

Re: twin turbo 400
What kind of 101mm turbo? A 101mm exh exducer is giant. Yeah it will wheelie off the line at 6000 RPM when it is finally spooled. Are you talking about a 101mm inducer that has little to do with boost?

Allright... I've gotten lots of PM's about this topic, and edited out the threats and insults which do nothing for this board or topic, other than make it look like a bunch of 14 year olds in junior high. Grow up.
The power adder board has been pretty good about acting like mature adults, helping folks out w/ questions, and generally acting like adults sharing the same passion of HP. If you've got a beef about someone, use the PM's. Don't go be an message board warrior posting threats about having gangs steal someone elses car (at least use the PM's instead if you don't have thick enough skin to just be the bigger person and let it roll off!). Anyways, just grow up.
Everyone's welcome to disagree, and feel free to call someone out on that, but state your reasons in an adult manner, and maybe the other person can learn from that. Pretend you're at work/class/grandparents/whatever, and act that way.
It seems everything is back on topic again, so carry on.

Re: twin turbo 400
The problem with quick79's build, is he finally toasted the motor on the 5.60 run. Cracked a bore IIRC. That was with a S400 that was modified with the 80mm compressor. The fastest he went with a stock S400 was 5.95's. Which is still flying. You can just buy the S400 from majestic with a 1.30 housing and be ok. I would think a 1.10 would probably be better. Just be ready to run a T6 flange. I would talk to Dave at Majestic and ask him what he suggests.
Im going to be running a single S400 on a 350 Dart. Im probably going to use a T4 .96 housing to decrease lag and move it into the 350's powerband.
Next thing, to make that thing strong youre going to need to have Dished pistons, head and main studs, if youre planning on a 4-bolt just forget the whole project now. Run a 2-bolt with studs. If you keep the boost down and dont spin the motor really hard it should live for awhile. You can only go so far with a stock block.
