Sumping the gas tank

I need to replace the fuel tank in the Z28tt, so I figure I might as well sump the spare used tank and get it ready for the no-holds-barred fuel system. I saw Guido's at the track last saturday, and it looked nice. How do you do that? Did you just weld it on, or did the fuel tank need to somehow get purged? My thought was to fill it 3/4" full of water, flip it upside down, and then start welding with the thought that there isn't enough fuel vapor to explode.

Also - has anyone added baffles or trap doors? TIA!

A.

Empty the tank as best you can, and drill a few of the holes for the sump. Then get another car, start it up, and stick the filler neck of the tank over the exaust pipe for 5 min. It will dry out any liquid left and pump all flammable fumes out.

To "baffle" a sum just drill holes on the tank above it(ie. 4-5 1" holes), not cut one big hole.

Then, yeah..just weld the sump on. The sump will prolly have to be cut, bent, and welded at the seam as well to fit the curve in the bottom of the stock tank. At least I did for mine when I was trying to make that work.

Ill reply because Guidos tank I sumped and sold to him.Get a Comp engenering sump.you drill 5 or six big holes.about 2 inch each (not sure Instructions say how big) under the area of the sump you have to trace the outline of it.You could fill it with water. When you weld it use low heat, the metal warps easily.test the leakage with kerosene. You will alway get small pin holes no matter what.Use either braze or solder to completly cover all the welds all around the sump, flows well to fill pin holes.Dont forget to test the sump with kerosene and definatly use the braze or solder to finish up.I had gotten a new tank so I didnt use the old one hope this helps
