twin turbo 358" with dart pro 1 230cc heads
buying heads this week for my car...
8.6:1, forged internals, with twin t04b's. ~20# boost
are the 230cc runners too big? i have a single plane accel pro ram with 1200cfm tb, and the turbo headers are 1 5/8".
also looking to go to a bigger cam... right now i have a comp hydro roller 232/236 .560/.586" 114lsa, but i want to add maybe 10 degrees of duration to that. maybe 242/246 or whatever.
would rather run lower boost but wind it on up to 7 grand or so instead of boosting the crap out of it up to 6k.
th400 with 3200 converter, transbrake, 9" ford rear with 3.50 gears.
whatchoo guys think? opinions/thoughts?
thanks,
jeremy

I am not a big fan of the Pro 1 heads, as cast. They are meant to be ported, rough out of the box. A buddy of mine has a set of 215s, they needed much love.
A set of Vic Jr, Brodix, Pro-Top, or others would be a better out of the box choice for big runners.

thanks for the heads up man! i have been looking at the brodix heads as well... might give them a shot.
i wish they had them in a ~72cc version, but i guess 67cc will work. (my pistons are weisco -11cc reverse dome)
trying to keep compression around 8.5:1.
any other advise?

Vic Jr heads are in your range, with a nasty wicked exhasut port, good for your application. However the exhaust ports are slightly raised, .300", might casuse probs with your turbo plumbing if its already built.

Car: I
Engine: Taunt
Transmission: Mustangs
There is a car I have seen a few write-ups on that is running a combo that is very similar. His is a slightly larger at 383 ci, and he is only using 210cc afr's. The thing makes 935 hp on 93 octane pump gas; not to shaby, huh?
Here is one article about the car:
Plan of Attack
Another article can be found in last months issue of GMHTP. I am pretty sure it's the same car, but not positive (both TT impalas in the same power range). If you can't find/don't have last months issue, they usally post the featured cars on their site a couple of months after the issue goes out of curculation. Regardless, this dude seems to have his $hit together, so you might want to sneak a peak at his combo if you haven't already. As mentioned in the linked article, he helped write the calmap 2000 program using this car. That's an outstanding credential if you ask me.

Car: 86 firebird with 98 firebird interi
Engine: pump gas 427sbc Dart Lil M 13.5:1
Transmission: Oldani TH400 w/ BTE 9" convertor
Axle/Gears: 31 spline Moser/full spool/4.11Rich
I just had my AFR 210's flowed a few months back and they outflow the Dart Pro 1 230's out of box, and I have some tweaking I could have done since these are only the 70% cnc versions. These are easily over the 300cfm@28" with a mild touch up on the core shift only. One thing with the Edelbrock's though is once they're outta the box, they are done-maxed out as cast.

great info guys....
i possibly got a good lead on a set of afr heads, so depending on how much the price is, i will most likely go that route.
the thing im still unsure of, however is port size. should i shoot for 210's or 220's?
for now, i will be cleaning up the ports myself, and probably putting manley severe duty pro-flo valves in there (undercut head and stem)
but i may just get them assembled.

Any actual numbers/real info on the Vic Jr's?
We also got some guys at the local track running those real hard: solid roller, Vic Jr, 383, into the 10s NA. One guy is claiming modest clean up with polished chambers.

I am building a twin turbo 406 right now, and I bought the assembled 210's.
DON"T buy their assembled heads.
If I hadn't taken the heads apart I would've been screwed, I told them exactly what I was building and that I wanted extreme duty inconel valves, and I got the cheapest most basic valve they had, they didn't even have hardened tips, and when I called them on it they didn't even care and said "you should probably run lash caps!"
Not to mention there was metal flakes inside the valve springs and under the spring shims as well!
I spent $2100 on afr 210's 100% cnc with titanium retainers.
Then I had to buy all new valves and locks(because their locks didn't fit tight in the new valves) and then the valve guides were not straight and had to hone them!
their heads kicks a$$ but I would never again buy an assembled head!
If you buy the 220's I am pretty sure you have to use shaft mount rockers too!
good luck!
